Steepest St In World... I Don't Take The Caravan! Snowdonia, Wales

  • My next video I'm staying in Snowdonia National Park in Wales and the first sightseeing I do is go to a castle in Harlech! Can you tell I like my castles? And then by chance, I realise this is the town that took away Dunedin's (NZ) 'steepest street' titleđŸ˜±
    Needing to do a supermarket shop, I headed to Porthmadog and get sidetracked by the cute port. Then it's a day of caravan chores with clothes washing, gas bottle swap and looking into the best navigation system to avoid future towing stress... I'm getting there.

    I am really enjoying your videos. I have recently bought a caravan and am having the narrow road anxieties before I've even taken it anywhere. I am from the UK so know all about the roads and how tricky they can be, even with a car! I make my first journey in a couple of days and chose a place which is literally along one road off a junction of the M3! Specifically chosen because of its ease. :D Thank you so much for your Vids; I've learnt a lot from them. And you're adorable.:)

    I visited that castle back in the 1960s, and recall as a young child wandering around those walls and wondering about those low parapets. This was part of a school trip, but not one as it would be allowed today. Back in 1965, our teacher arranged for a group of about 40 of us to have a week in North Wales in June. I had my birthday on the first day, when I had just turned ten.
    We stayed in caravans, with eight of us in each, all just ten years old without any adult in the caravan. We made our own breakfast in the caravan. The only adults on the whole trip were the school teacher, his wife, and the driver of the coach. We were allowed to roam pretty well freely in all the places we visited, including the castles. I recall walking the parapets with the teacher's young son, who was probably about six at the time. On that trip, we even walked up to the peak of Mount Snowdon via the Llanberis path alongside the railway line. I did it in Wellington boots, which was about all I had to wear apart from my normal shoes.
    The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there...
    But I still recall those parapets.

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  Pƙed 4 lety

      Oh wow! That’s a lovely memory and like that you had more freedom. Although crazy to think 8 fit in a caravan.

    • @TheEulerID
      @TheEulerID Pƙed 4 lety

      @@TravellingK It was not the sort of caravan that's towed behind a car. The were relatively large caravans which might no be called mobile homes, and would have arrived on site on the back of a lorry and never moved. A holiday in a caravan park was part of a working class upbringing in the 1960s in he days before cheap package holidays to Spain. There are still a few around.

      That's a little over 26 feet. That has to be a very tight squeeze on those roads. Is that the total length or just the trailer length? Harlech Castle is like a full-size toy castle - square with corner turrets; one of many built by the English (technically the Normans) to subdue Wales. Originally the sea came up to it. Was captured by and became the base of Owain Glyndwr, leader of the last serious Welsh rebellion against the English (c1400-1409), and declared by his supporters as the Prince of Wales. At the end Harlech was besieged and fell to the English, and Glyndwr escaped and vanished into legend.

Now being a Scottish fellow I can appreciate the beauty of New Zealand 🇳🇿 but I insist that if you get the chance to do this again you have to come to Scotland next time, we have some fabulous areas you need to visit.
    Are you going to be around for the NEC Shown this year. Hubby and I took a break from Caravanning but are planning on buying a new one in May 2020, have started recording our walk rounds, between you, Mr and Mrs T, Andrew D and Dougal. We are planning on trying this Vlog malarkey. Haha, keep the clips coming, hope you will be here for the NEC :)
    Love Andy, Alex and Mario

    Well bloody hell....I never thought I'd see the area I grew up in on your video! At 11:03, that is Llidiart-Y-Parc and the next village just about 2 or 3 miles along, is Glyndyfrdwy where I grew up. It is also the home of Owain GlyndƔr, a Welsh Prince who declared himself Prince Of Wales in the 1400s and achieved independence for Wales for a brief period. He captured Harlech Castle and made it his home and base of operations until the English recaptured it.

    Never been to Harlech. I'm a bit of a castle fan and that's a fine example no doubt buggered up by
    Oliver Cromwell. Not sure if that's the steepest street in the world - there's some on Sardinia I
    reckon would beat that. My best mate lives in Kidderminster - known him for 55 years ! Cool video

    • @andrewjones-productions
      @andrewjones-productions Pƙed 4 lety

      Castell Harlech was the last place to be subdued by Cromwell's forces. I'm glad the castles remain as they bring in tourists into Wales. However, these castles are a reminder of English oppression and must be remembered for what their place in history is. I quite like Harlech, but my favourite is Castell Criccieth. The town and general atmosphere is somewhere I always liked as a child. When I was in secondary school, Ysgol Ardudwy (at the base of the Castle) was one of the schools which my school (Ysgol Y Berwyn, Y Bala) that was a 'neighbour' school where we'd play football, rugby matches with and have cultural activities with. The others were Ysgol Y Gader, Dolgellau and Ysgol Y Moelwyn, Blaenau Ffestiniog. By now, you probably guessed that 'ysgol' means school - also ladder! There aren't English names for these schools. The names typically taken from geographical features. Berwyn mountain range, Cader Idris mountain (mutated to Y Gader) and Ardudwy is the traditional name for the area around Harlech.

    Is that the normal to swap tanks? You can do that here in the US but it is double the price! Most just refill the tank. My tanks are onboard so a quick stop at any propane station and off I go. I have a tank on my outside grill at my home and when it is empty i just run it down the road and get it filled.

      To me, those B-roads are normal wide roads. Of course, we are used to pulling livestock trailers etc along them, so doesn't bother me one little bit. I now live in Japan and the Japanese are always batting on about how narrow their roads are. I always feel like laughing as my family home (farm) is on a single-track road which is only about 2 metres wide - at best. Noooo problem. Caravan, livestock trailer or a wide hay baler on the back of a tractor....easy-peasy. đŸŽó §ó ąó ·ó Źó łó ż

    Might I suggest that you'll always find it easier (and safer) to reverse to the off-side. Even if you have to drive past your selected parking place turn around and come back to it. I spent almost all my working life behind a steering wheel (HGV/PSV) all over Europe and it's a lesson I learnt very early. Right-hand drive, reverse to the right, left-hand drive (yes I drove both) reverse to the left, whenever possible! Although in your situation in this video, it would possibly mean you'd have to ignore their ill thought-out one way system.

    Yes Harlech (pron. har-lick) There's a well know, famous even, Welsh military-song called "Men of Harlech" - said to describe events during the seven-year siege of Harlech Castle between 1461 and 1468 vs Henry V. Longest siege in Britain ever. To "tide me over" is a useful phrase to know re. ur washing dilemma! Gas-bottles? Yes I have been caught out a few times like that. Some gas-bottles, most I think I'm right in saying have a 'right-hand-thread.' So quite common they get over-tightened. Nice driving by the way! Does my 'ed in just watching - Grrrr!! Nuts!!

    You seem to have a knack of finding the narrowest roads all the time! Many of these roads have the national speed limit, the white circle with the black diagonal line, (unless marked otherwise) and being not in built up areas the limit is 60mph. Clearly it's impossible to do 60 on narrow twisty roads however many routing apps don't know this and assume you can do 60, therefore take you that way as it's the "fastest". Some apps take real traffic speeds into account e.g. TomTom but that costs money. Waze is a good alternative.
    P.S. Enjoying the vlogs and a NZ take on the UK.

    In the US most trailers come with two propane bottles and an automatic switchover valve. This way you will never run out of gas in the middle of cooking or the middle of the night when it's cold and you have the heater running. Simply fill up the empty bottle when able. I see your trailer has space for two bottles. Does it also have an automatic switchover valve? We also have the bottle exchange setup here, but it's much pricier than refilling your own bottles. Not to mention they only fill the bottle to 75% capacity, supposedly for safety purposes, which is total rubbish. Also, most water heaters operate off either gas or electricity, so at an RV park with electricity, always heat by electricity. Propane is for boondocking or parks with no electrical service.

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  Pƙed 4 lety

    @1:02That is not a "one-way road" : it is a "single track road". It is a very important difference. On a one-way road traffic can only go one way, and they are almost entirely in towns. A single track road is the extreme opposite of that : only wide enough for one vehicle but traffic can be travelling either way, so cars meet head-on!
