  • Sourdock can be picked as soon as they sprout off the tundra if you can’t wait for fresh greens after a long winter, however some people prefer to pick them much later when they are fully grown. The leaves shrivel and shrink when cooking , and you must pick a large bundle in order to yield enough to put away or prepare your “green” akutaq. Bring your children as more hands yield more, and more is better...teach them “Aviukaq” in the process. It is a traditional practice in which you share a small portion of your snack or meal with loved ones who’ve passed away, by burying a bite or piece underneath the tundra, honoring and remembering the generations that have gone before us. It teaches them basic principles of respect and to be thankful for our gifts... the practice also gives us good luck, and a reward for a plentiful gathering.

You're welcome. That's one good reason to use your Qaspeq out to the tundra too, put it to good use...

How do you store it? I remember my grandmother storing it a barrel.

Mom cools it, drain, then put it in ziplock bag & freeze it, and thaw it out when ready to use
