  • This Yup'ik Eskimo fable, a short story, has been told many times by my father, Tommy Phillip Sr., ever since I can remember growing up. For all these years, I thought it was about Eqiuryalria (or someone chopping wood), but have learned recently it is about Qiuryalria - an old Yup'ik term that means "to collect, cut or gather grass." It is a tale that originated from our late Great-Grandpa Aparpak John John of Kwigilligok, Alaska. My niece, Kayla, and I were tasked to get a project completed for our UAF Alaska Education class, so this is the end product - Enjoy!
