Bandit is the kind of father I want to become. I want to raise my future children the way he and Chilli do. Because even though they’re not perfect, they’re just so… genuine. They know when to stop, they know when to say they’re sorry, and they know when they need to work on themselves. They’re still human… even when they’re dogs.

Alternatively try to get and raise a child by yourself! Surrogates and donors are there for a reason, as well as adopting being an option (although that tends to be harder for single parents, specially men in most places unfortunately).

I can see my sister and BIL be parents like this when they have children just be sure you can already see it in how they treat each other. Even their arguments (if they can be called that) are so caring and filled with love and understanding because they genuinely love each other and that means not wanting to hurt the other person. So many people, myself included, say the absolute most vile things to the people we love most and it's crazy how that's seen as normal. I think that's the key.
I guess I can empathize with him because my parenting style is similar. Though I probably loose patience way faster.

I wish that I had a father like Bandit, he’s so enthusiastic about everyday life with his daughters and always engages in their silly antics and make believe adventures, my father was and is never present, my step father was not an improvement either, I remember a lot of bad confrontations between him and I. But bandit is that one dad that you feel safe around knowing you’ll always be loved and he’ll pick you up when you fall

I like that there are literally zero episodes where bandit acts sad to have daughters, nor does anyone say they feeld bad for him not having sons. It's such a common, terrible, trope that puts blame on children for something they cant control especially because Bandit's excellent parenting points out that the gender of your child is irrelevenat when it comes to fully loving your children
I like bandit because he actually lives with his wife and kids instead of taking a lifetime to buy milk. Some say he is unrealistic as a father....I'm sorry but if treating your family nicely and playing with your kids when you have the time to do so isn't that high of a bar to reach. I also love how he and chili turn chores into games. Making chores fun is a good thing because kids won't see it as a pain or punishment they will see it in a more positive way and will learn why chores need to be done in a less boring way and may not even need to be prompted to do so because they would want to do those things. Most find chores to be well a chore because they feel forced to do these things and don't see the fun in doing them.
Every time I see people say he's an unrealistic father, I always ask if they even had a father. Bandit IS a classic Australian dad 😂. Immature, yet mature at the points he needs to be. He's kind, his own person and will give time to his kids. That's what a father SHOULD be. It's the most realistic portrayal of a father figure in media in ages!
I agree. Obviously none of us are going to have a perfect shiny life like this cartoon depicts because we are real humans and we can sometimes mess things up, but we should all try to at least model ourselves after characters like Bandit. At the end of the day we have to do our best for the children in our lives.
The only thing “unrealistic” about bandit is the fact that he’s a talking dog. XD
Most people should not be having kids. They're not emotionally mature enough to handle it.
What I love most about Bandit aside from how he never takes himself too seriously (episodes like Pirates not withstanding) is that he's also willing to admit when he's made mistakes and puts in the work to correct that. Take Yoga Ball where as soon as Bingo tells him he's been playing too rough, he immediately and sincerely apologizes. Then instead of just leaving it at that, he and Bingo work together to come up with a way of setting boundaries so she can let him know with her big girl bark when she's getting overwhelmed. It's a common sentiment that children shouldn't know until later on that their parents are flawed, but Bluey challenges that by saying that showing your children that even adults can slip up now and then isn't a bad thing because being imperfect is what makes us human. The important thing is how we work around those imperfections so that we can do right by ourselves and our loved ones.
A lot of that kind of reminds me of an old cartoon I saw as a kid (I think it was a Baby Looney Tunes show or something like that). One of the episodes has Granny (the main adult that cares for everyone) tell kids about the sleep crusts in their eyes coming from the "sandman", and baby Daffy Duck becomes terrified of the "sandman" putting sand in his eyes. So he stays up all night, and becomes confused about getting sleep crusts in his eyes, showing that Granny was lying.
When they confront her, she apologizes, admits that she made a mistake, and that even grownups can sometimes make mistakes.
TL;DR, that scene from that old cartoon is still in my head to this day, and something that helped me humanize the adults around me as a kid. ^^

I love the Duck Cake episode. It's one of Bandit's less perfect examples as a parent to Bluey: he's too busy baking to focus on teaching her a life lesson on why we need to do our jobs and help out. But he tries so earnestly to make the perfect cake for Bingo, and his reaction when the head falls off is so genuine. Bluey ends up learning her lesson naturally, not just from realizing that cleaning up the broken duck cake makes her tail wag, but also seeing how hard Bandit is willing to work at something he isn't comfortable with because he loves his daughters.
I love how this show doesn't dumb down or lessen the importance of the dad and shows how important both rolls of the parents is. I love how they show a healthy parenting style and the equal responsibility both parents have.
Roles*
One of my favourite Bandit moments is in Bin Night where every night he asks Bingo how she's doing at Kindy and when she tell him there's a new kid acting cheeky he encourages her to confront the situation but also when she says the kid upset her he comforts her and tell her it's good to talk about this type of problems
I also love how Chili follows up with Bingo in the morning, not only is it good parenting on her part, but it shows that Bandit communicates with her about the updates Bingo gives.

Yes, I think my instinct would be to try to fix the problem or tell her something to make it better. But I like how Bandit shows some frustration at the other kid an doesn't offer advice other than its good to talk about it. He doesn't have all the answers.
To me, his flaws are what makes him such a good dad, a lot of times in kids media, fathers are either so good that they are one dimensional or so bad that you want to save the kids from them, but I feel like bandit is such a good example, because he makes mistakes, has character flaws that he still needs to work on or may never overcome which is so realistic and healthy, and he teaches dads that if you hurt your kids even unintentionally you still owe them an explanation and apology which so many real dads could benefit from.
I am a dad, 54 years old, with 2 daughters... Bandit is my spirit animal. I can't tell you the number of times I walked away from the show teary eyed. My girls are now in their 20s, but the memories this brings up has almost made me ugly cry.

@@battybuddy I don't think that goofiness I have will ever go away, part of being a dad. My daughter's still visit, bring their Xboxes, and play games (one has a husband). We play games until early morning, then they sleep over. We play board games, we laugh, we watch movies together, I am truly blessed. 🥲

He shows that it isn’t ‘non-manly’ to take care of your kids and be childish, and show compassion. These are all things we’ve made up. Bandit is still a classic dad, with a similar personality to daddy pig, but is way more layered. He still does typical ‘guy’ stuff, still likes to BBQ and watch sports, but he also has time for his family and talks to his kids with a calm, understanding voice. Most dads are super defensive and take a back seat in taking care of the kids emotionally

I honestly get a little offended when people call Bandit a bad father because, for me personally, my dad was far worse. He was an alcoholic, he got in trouble with the law numerous times, drove drunk, frequently argued with my mom, physically beat me and my sister, and even tried to unalive himself in front of me. Bandit has healed my inner child in a way because now I actually have a good example of positive parenting that I can learn from, even if he's just a talking cartoon dog.
Also, listen to Custard. The lead singer is also Bandit's voice actor, and their music is pretty good.
I’d also like to point towards Adventure Time with men being emotional. Finn and Jake are brothers, through and through. They’re also heros, but not the stereotypical kind that doesn’t show emotions. Finn and Jake are willing to hold hands when they’re scared and cry in front of each other! They say they love each other and that is so sweet. I love Adventure Time for this. They taught a lot of good lessons

I also associate that with Bandits whole “life is boring when it’s easy” philosophy. Guys got a competitive streak a mile wide, and he want his girls to learn to love and appreciate actually having to work for what they want instead of getting it handed to them or giving up.
Easiest way to do that in any given situation is, of course, a lesson. XD
Bandit in a way, really helped my inner child heal. My dad couldn’t care less about me. He left me and my mom when I was young and even to this day, he still can act like a dad to save his life. He had a shitty dad too but guess he thought that was the example to follow. I feel like shit sometimes when I see my friends’ dads being the most generous and sweetest people. Always remembering their interests/their activities.
Mine doesn’t even wanna buy me $1 notebook when I told him I needed school supplies it blows off at me for wanting new shoes when my old ones already have holes in them. And I don’t buy his “I’m barely getting by” shit because this man buys himself fuckin Jordan’s/Louis Vuitton flats.
When I watch Bluey (I’m a senior in HS) the way Bandit talks to Bluey/plays with her feels like my inner child that was so insecure of not having a dad got her closure. I also became friends with my next door neighbor who acts like a dad. He’s now my guitar teacher. Always asking if I’m doing okay or if I need anything since I’m usually home alone from 12-7pm. I see him as Bandit with how goofy and dumb he can act but he’s great.
Ye IK what U mean. Idk ‘bout urs but with my dad it was more about child support & he claimed he barely had enough money for a cheeseburger but had enough money for a house, a beach house, & a phone. When he left I ofc had Mom(kinda) but instead of being like Chili was, mine when I did ask to ply decided to tan at the pool or whatever she found more important at the moment then I had to deal with a jerk stepdad for a while but I’m not necessarily complaining I’m just saying my parents are my motivation to be a better parent than either 1 of them were. When I saw Bandit he was the definition of a good dad IMO
For me, an excellent example of Bandit being an emotionally present parent is the episode Yoga Ball. When he gives space for Bingo to assert a boundary and give consent (in this case, establishing a boundary of what is "too rough" play), God I am tearing up just thinking of it! Also what a lovely episode to use as an example of how to teach kids consent/boundaries for things THEY understand. Yoga Ball is my fav Bluey episode and my go-to for when I need some wholesome cheering up.
I like how Bandit and the other adult characters are allowed to be, well, for lack of a better word, people. They are shown having conversations without the kids involved, have arcs and lessons of their own to learn, and the show takes time to show Bandit and Chili having moments to be themselves.
14:27 But Bandit didn't have a choice, and it really wasn't his fault. As mentioned, Bluey and Bingo stayed at the trampoline place too long, even though Bandit tried to get them leave without resorting to using assertion. Bandit had no control over the library's hours of operation and he did explain it to Bluey, but she wasn't accepting it. So I disagree that both of them were in the wrong in that situation.
That’s fair enough, I think I could have used different words, I’m aware of bandit being not able to control that situation. When I said “they both messed up” I was more or less stating that they both realized they made promises that they didn’t keep as opposed to saying that each one of them was in the wrong. I do think some clarification on my part would have helped tho to better convey this so I understand where the confusion would lie based on my words. Thanks for bringing that up buddy :)

I mean I still don't blame Bandit for not being able to take the girls to the library because they were taking too long. But I think a better way of Promises for Bandit is that you shouldn't try to use promises to get something out of stuff. Don't use promises recklessly to get something you want, whether it is to get the kids out early or to hurry them up only to end up playing a game that can be humiliating 😅
Not bashing on Bandit, just saying something that may shed a better light in what might be a fault on Bandits part.
Guys... I know a lot of us might have bad parents.. and many don't want children... But, we could change this, and start a lineage of generations with good people, who, in their hearts, want to make the best of themselves for the ones they care ❤

@@darmou Sadly for me and many others I dont want to have my own children (I'm willing to adopt but not birth) due to the trauma of my parents, I just want our horrible bloodline to end. I learned I can still help build the next generation or even be this one by being a role model or protect those I come across in life. There are are always going to be people who abandon kids, I dont even want to risk the chance of being the monster my parents were but that doesnt mean there arent other ways to pave a future.

I follow gentle parenting and being a father has been the best thing I have ever done with my life. I immediately noticed something different about Bandit and the show Bluey as a whole whenever it would appear on screen.
Bandit is not perfect, as no one is, but as a Dad he really is the *ideal*

i love many of the Bluey story lines, but one i especially love is in the cartoon called "Weekend," if i am not mistaken. Bingo encounters a walking leaf, and because she doesn't want to frighten it, she calls softly to her daddy several times, urging him to come see the walking leaf. daddy is distracted and doesn't hear her. she is sad when the walking leaf flies away, and being distracted by activity all day, sets her feelings aside...until bed time. Mom, Bluey and dad all try to cheer her up. It's adorable and touching when Bingo explains why she is so sad, when she reveals to daddy that she was the magic statue that gave him trouble earlier in the day, and when she asks that daddy leave the bedroom door open "this far so the walking leaf can come in."
I love that dads are getting more positive representation in media, my dad has always been such a positive influence on my life and he’s who I’m closest too, I was always disappointed whenever shows and whatnot showed dads as only these negative stereotypes. I’m glad that’s there’s more representation of good dads for kids nowadays
It was a struggle to know how to be a dad at first for me. There are no easy answers, but I am so glad there is an actual example of a great dad out there for me to learn from! Great video, cheers!

Bluey has made me nearly cry sometimes (I rarely cry). And it's not because I feel directly sad from it, but commoved. Mainly because my childhood was rough w my parents. I want to be this. I want to grow my future kids happy. Y'all out there who had it rough with their parents: Break the cycle! We all can! ♥️ Teach them lessons but never leave em scars as deep as their bones! (Maybe skin Deep scars are necessary...) Love and blessings for y'all.

I have such a bad relationship with both my biological dad and step dad, I'd almost forgotten good dads exist too. This show is allowing me to both relive the best parts of my childhood and also rewrite the wrongs my father figures have done
Problem is, I’ve not once ever NOT wanted a kid. It’s absolutely the fact that I would regret bringing a child that I know I’d love so much into this hellscape. If the world was as beautiful, seemingly fair, kind and sociable as the one portrayed in Bluey, I wouldn’t think twice.

My dad was a busy dad but he loved playing with me and Jack. Especially when we were kids. He regrets not having as much time with us as kids. But even the memories of playing with my dad and exploring with my dad are greatly important to me, especially now as an adult.

I watch bluey and I get really excited about the idea of becoming a parent. I know it won't be as perfect, but being a good parent and healing my family's abuse cycle is the biggest goal of my life and I am preparing for it greatly. Bandit is my role model!!!
bandit reminds me a lot of my father. over the late years, he fell ill with depression and our relationships changed. I've changed too, I've developed some intolerances to some of his characteristics as is normal, but he gave me a fantastic childhood. and even if it's not what it used to be, our relationship isn't what it used to be, I was very lucky to have had him as a father in those years, and im grateful to all the love he was capable to give me, to the many games we played, the time he spent with me. even if its in the past, he made that moment of life great, i dont care if now its changed. everything changes, and i take what i had as deep confort memory
As a 14 year old boy, this makes me a lot less worried for adulthood. I will be turning 15 and entering high school very soon, so I have been looking into adulthood and have only been seeing the stressful parts, bills, a job, taxes, just stressful things in general. This show has legitimately made me so much more optimistic for the future. Right now I am too old to be represented by bluey but too young to be represented by Bandit, but I still know what I have experienced and what I will. I am looking forward to parenthood after seeing this and am excited to be a good dad!

When I was very young, my Father was very stubborn.
As I grew, My Father grew to learn that he wasn’t always right, and learned to apologize when he made a mistake.
Because sadly, most dads in cartoons are horrible. Bandit deserved the award he got. 💙
My husband watches this with me, sometimes, and he hopes for us to be like Chili and Bandit when he have kids.
I know that when I'm ready to adopt my kids, Bandit has always been the exact kind of parent I want to be. I want to be able to be sassy and weird. Fun and clever. And able to admit when I've done something wrong to my kids. I wanna be the parents my kids brag about to their friends.

@@HopeGardner3amed Linda and Bob are great parents, yes their kids are a mess but who isn't a mess? Bob had a rough childhood to the point where he couldn't spend 10 minutes in the same room as his father, but he tries to take those past experiences and uses them as a way to be a better parent.
I have a three year old and I was only just recently introduced to Bluey. I love, and I cannot stress that enough, love this show and I have been try to learn from it. It helps that my little guy loves it too (and Octonauts). That said, I made one mistake. We had been watching the show prior to his bedtime a few evenings ago and he had fallen asleep. So I continued watching the current episode and one more after which happened to be Sleepytime. It’s extremely rare for me to tear up; but dear god that episode did it. It was simply amazing, heart felt and.... just so, so well done.
Oh and I’d like to proudly mention that, as of two weeks ago, I have an official Bluey lanyard (picked out by him too!). And yeah, I have a few jealous coworkers at the lab and love it!

It took me a while to warm up to bandit. In the beginning it felt like he was going to be that teasing, loud, obnoxious dad who did what he wanted when he wanted, but after a while I realised that he is all those things, but the latter...Everything he does he does while teaching and engaging with his kids. He's enjoying the moment and allowing himself to be both an adult and a kid and enjoying play, which I think alot of dads are afraid to do. They are afraid to enjoy play, especially with their girls. I also love how he adjusts his physical strength when he is playing with his daughters not because they are girls, but because they request boundaries and he doesn't complain or try to justify his rough play. Showing them and teaching them, its okay to request boundaries from adults and they can receive that respect from men too and they dont have to "make do". And he also doesn't take gender roles too seriously either because he knows its pretend for the girls and its not an attack to him personally. Of course he worries about how others would perceive him, but its amazing how he just tells other people he is playing along, and he's okay because his girls are learning and having fun. And I also just love it when he cuts corners for things like the episode when they went to the pool, and admits and accepts his short comings. And I just love, love, love how he flirts with Chili especially during the games. I still can't the time he was a peacock in the beginning of series and was strutting towards Chili out of my mind. Peak dad and Peak romancing. Its amazing how he shows he is a working dad, a loving engaging dad, and still able to romance his wife in front of his kids. Because I feel like alot of adults don't know how to switch up their ways of showing love for their partner once they have kids or are afraid of showing affection towards each other in front of their kids.
I look forward to your Chili episode. I love her dearly as well.

imagine, you are preparing to clean up a very messy room, and instead of remembering all the dull, numbing or cases where it was a punishment or negatively incentivised...
you think of the fun games you played with your parents, that explained through play, that showed you naturally, that you remember positively and discover what the things meant, that you learn was so soaked in love and compassion.
would you not -completely break down in the warm fuzzy feelings of a blessed childhood- have a big pep in your step, dancing around with joy as you put things away and make things nice again?
I always see a little bit of my parents in the parents of Bluey. I think that’s why I resonate with this show so much, it really draws me back to my childhood.
As I like to say as a re-envisioned quote from Monsters University, 'One bad moment does not a bad father make'. For every bad moment, Bandit has 100 good moments to offer. That's a pretty good trade-off compared to other dads, and even the bad things he does aren't that bad. The worst thing I can say he did off the top of my head was when he said he could get used to having two Bingos in the 'Mini Bluey' episode, and then didn't apologise for it. I've heard some people justify that by saying that it wasn't focused on the parents, but rather the sister's bond and how their differing personalities are what make them special and love each other, and they each have pros and cons, which I can understand, but that's probably one of only two bad things I can remember him doing (he did other 'bad' things, like when he was throwing out Bluey's drawings, but he made up for it so I don't count it) out of 141 episodes. That's pretty good, if I do say so myself.
Ever since I started watching Bluey, one thing stuck out to me the most: Bandit reminds me of my own dad, who had passed away early 2019 (I was only 16 at the time).
My dad would never hesitate to join in on my games, taught me how to love and respect nature (with the creek becoming my happy place because of him), and just always being there for me, even if it wasn’t physically.
I am glad I found Bluey, it’s been nothing but beneficial towards my mental health.
He is a lot like my dad, which is very comforting.. This show makes me feel safe for just a little when I feel down at 3am
It almost hurts how much I wish I had loving amazing parents like them
I'm really looking forward to your Chilli video. Bandit gets all the love, and it's well deserved, but Chilli always goes under-noticed in the conversation of amazing parenting, and I think a big part of that has to do with the fact that she's barely present within the first season and only really comes into her own as a character towards S2. Both the Heelers are huge inspirations for me and I hope I can be half as good a parent as them in the future.
This damned dog has elevated my standars of men higher that I could even imagine.
i hope that a character like bandit existing helps there be more good dads in media. hes obviously not the only one, but hes such an amazing example that it makes me really understand what weve been missing from media for basically forever, and how i desperately wish there was more. im so sick of fictional fathers who neglect their kids, hurt or hate their kids, encourage not only themselves but everyone else to push down their emotions, and are just blatantly stupid on top of it all, how theyre all basically peter griffin in different forms or something, or the ones in serious roles that are just plain out abusive and nothing else.
my own dad isnt a bad dad btw but hes definitely not the best either lol, hes still human after all.
we need more dad figures who love their kids and genuinely just want whats best for their kids, even if sometimes it comes at their own expense, but hopefully doesnt have to. i wish there was more bandit heelers in the world.
I’ve been watching Bluey, and yeah- Bandit is top tier dad. His only flub ever was the one time when his ego got him to cheat at the obstacle race. I was like “Bandit- you’re still a great dad, but yeah: what was up with THAT?”
Watching bluey triggered Paternal energy from inside of me that I thought for sure never existed.
Also some of the missing american episodes are on the DVD. (Still wish it were a bluray.)
I’m writing a story right now and the main character’s parents are literally based off of Chili and Bandit even though you don’t see them much I specifically made these parents after watching every single Bluey episode available in America

If I could, I’d give my arms, legs, or even a load of money to have a dad like Bandit for one day just to experience how it would be with someone who actually loved you. I never had a dad growing up. Sure, I had some stranger who was biologically related to me live in the same house with me, mom, and siblings growing up, but he wasn’t a dad… A real dad would’nt yell obscenities at you, hurt you emotionally and physically, do and say such horrible things a child should never, ever know, or hear. All of it day in, and day out, and basically walk on egg shells around him 24/7.
Bandit Heeler is easily my favourite character in the show, and one of my favourite characters from any piece of media! Thanks for the great video breaking down his best(and flawed) qualities!

I wish Bandit was my dad. It may seem like I’m ungrateful, but I just want a dad who tries to be in my life. A dad who cares about me. That’s what Bandit is, any dad can be like that. You don’t need to be perfect like Bandit, you just need to be as good as you can like Bandit does. Bandit may be a cartoon character, but he feels real despite it being unrealistic having a father like him. Hopefully one day there will be fathers like him.

I was neglected as a child with a narcissistic-abusive mother, I didn't get a chance to bond with my dad until I went to college to study in the university where my dad works, since then I act like my younger self when I'm with my dad, I hold his hand when we cross the road, I take him shopping with me, goes to movies/mall with him and my younger brother
I know acting childish in front of him is kinda cringe but a part of me feels like I'm finally getting the attention I didn't received when I was a child since my parents are alwaya busy with work, like I'm compensating with something...
Bandit reminds me so much of my dad.
Bandit has so much time for his kids and he prioritises their play and learning above his own needs. I couldn’t even get my dad to give me the time of day.

as one of the tons of children of divorce, with a twist of neglectful and selfish parents, any episode with bandit makes me cry. i basically live vicariously through bluey and bingo and its helped heal my inner child a bit. this show is amazing

Bluey is the most charming and creatively constructed rendition of capitalist utopia I have ever seen. It's a world that has emotional problems and issues to go through and the show actually addresses those difficulties but also puts it in a world where there is infinite time and resources available. We all would love to be a parent like Bandit or Chilli or to have a parent like Bandit or Chilli but very few people can even come close to the ideal and that reality ends up ticking a lot of people off. If you can't keep yourself locked up in the escapism you either get dismayed at your own inadequacies or ticked off at the impossible expectations.
Bandit is absolutely awesome! I always get a little sad when an episode doesn't have him in it. Bandit is even my current Facebook profile pic.
I honestly hate the way dads, and men in general, have been portrayed for so long in media: incompetent, lazy, disengaged, even mean. I guess it can be occasionally funny but, as you said, it was the prevailing image for so long. Bandit is a wonderful breath of fresh air. He's also just hilarious lol

Bandit is all of our dads, he is the father figure we want but we can’t get for some of us and that makes him a great father
I am a shifter and have scripted that my future children have a father like bandit and that I am a mother like Chilli, I would only ever have children if I could guarantee a good happy life like seen in Bluey and know i know how i should act if i ever did have children, i often take methods from Bluey to help take care of my little sister, trying to help give her a better life then she would have otherwise
Bandit is a good role model for what a father should be like, accountable, responsible, fun and hard working.
It's not only a good inspiration for fathers, but I hope that kids with bad dads who watch this.. grow up knowing it isn't their fault, I hope they question authority and how they deserve so much better..
What makes this extra special to me is that my dad is pretty much exactly like Bandit, always joking around with me and pretending to be silly :D
Stay at Home father of 3 here. I've often been asked by other dads how I'm so patient with my children and how I found my inner child again. This show and a bit of gumption is my answer. That's it. No secret, just me copying a blue dog on TV and loving my kids. Bandit is my role model ha.
I like Bandit because he reminds me of my Dad. Growing up, my Dad was always very involved with myself and sister, even when my Mum had a brief period as a SAHM. He was always playing with us, always helping and supporting us and my Mum, always did chores with my Mum. Feels nice to see a positive father being portrayed in a TV show
