+Ward Huyskes Frankly, Windows Phone is never greater than android, but as a WP user, you get an awesome OS with unique personalization and best in class update support (on newer device at least), especially if you are have a developer unlocked device... Lumia 950 has a far more superior camera package cmpared tl the the G4, and you get the iris scanner, Continuum and Windows Helo support and most important of all, windows 10 Redstone 2 update

Ward Huyskes - Well, for me it is how fast the OS is. Great level of integration with my desktop/laptop and simplicity is also one of my reasons. I could not care less about Snapchat and PokemonGO. For me 950XL is my production device to help me do my job and it is great device. Some people may not like it but I do not care, I love 950XL and will never go back to Android...

I have only really seen your Microsoft related videos thus far, and I am not the biggest Microsoft follower, but I thoroughly enjoy your videos and thoughts. I am also an avid technology enthusiast. I get very excited when I stumble upon a channel of another tech enthusiast that makes quality videos as you do. What I like most about your videos is that from what I can see is that you are well researched, passionate about what you do and most importantly, you are future focused. You have made predictions in your other two videos that I watched which I can get behind. None of them were too far fetched, and they are very exciting. Good job! I have subscribed and look forward to future content.

+Benjamin Petrucci Windows 10 Mobile was launched together with the 950 so it's nowhere near 2-3 years old, even the PC version was just launched in July 2015. Also WP 8.1 was quite stable since it was available. The guy it's clearly exaggerating, the 950 was never as bad as some claim.

Not The One It’s March 2019 now and Windows Phone is officially dead, with security updates ending this December. The App Store also lacks the most important apps, like Signal etc. and all in all the platform is underdeveloped, insecure, and aesthetically nothing what an Android launcher couldn’t replicate.

  • @Winner8501
    @Winner8501 Před 8 lety +11

You nailed the situation perfectly, thanks for this video and I hope lots of people watch it.
I personally bought Lumia 550 about six months ago since I wanted to try out the platform. I quickly found out that I *like* being a sort of "beta tester" (unpaid, sadly) for the platform. It is indeed exciting to constantly look forward for new developments, new features, new builds, new app updates, etc. Even on the low-end, the system is usable and even enjoyable. And live tiles, when you arrange them to your liking, make a supremely beautiful homescreen that no other platform can replicate.
Now, also due to your videos, I am about to buy Lumia 950 since it is finally discounted enough around here for me to seriously consider buying it. I am looking forward to experiencing a high-end Windows smartphone, after learning to live with the low-end. Especially, as you said yourself, the camera.
It is kind of ironic that people are burying this platform now, when (finally) it is coming to its own. What a shame. I am going to stick around because I couldn't stand the boredom of Android or iOS, which have reached their innovation peak and now "just work". I have no problem being in the tiny minority who "resist" the iOS/Android duopoly :-) And when/if Windows Mobile catches on, I'll be one of those smug old-timers mumbling "I told you so" ;-)

JOTA, I got my first Lumia 950 in November/15 from mricrosoft store online. They gave me the dual/ international one in order to activate in Verizon. After going back and forward with Verizon and Microsoft. Verizon was not able to activate my phone for almost 2 months. Verizon blaming on Microsoft and bicerversa, was absolutelly frustrating. At the end Microsoft refunded me the total including all the goodies I had to buy from different online stores like covers, cables, etc.
To finish my Lumia 950 experience. I moved some of my lines to ATT in January/16 just to get this phone.
Life battery on the Lumia really s#cks, phone is sharp, clean, beautiful, plataform in unbelievable "for work". It wont for people who wants the phone for fun because there are not enough apps in the market.
June/16 I went back to Verizon because ATT is horrible on everything. Online, customer service and even how they treat Small businesses and its billing.
I lost aprox 2K in this process. Anyways!!!

I owned in 2015 a Lumia 640, which is a cheap upper low end phone , a real deal for its price. It had the best camera algorithms, HDR and camera app I ever used , it was extraordinary, it overperformed for a tiny 8MP 1/4" f2.2, the shots had perfect white balance and exposure and quite punchy colours without being too much, if you added the HDR option it got with great dynamic range (you have the option to edit how much HDR you want ,in the gallery app, yeah, you can give a stronger or weaker HDR to the photo after you shot it + you can do the same to the flash, the single camera app with such features, still missing them) , ok the photos weren't flagship level because of the tiny sensor , but much better than some phones twice the price . Aside the overperforming camera , the performance was battery smooth in the OS(but buggy and laggy in apps) , Windows 10 Mobile is the smoothest OS I ever seen, better than Android or IOS on wtf, a low end phone with Snapdragon 400( 4 cores A7 32-bit) with 1GB RAM DDR3?! But as Tech Altar says, the lack of apps and the very poor quality of the ones that are gives it a beta state ,that made me come back to Android, longing for the incredible camera app and smooth OS, hoping that UWP and ARM compatibility with desktop Windows 10 will save this unpolished diamond, but until then Android is my daily driver .

If there isn't an app for something, there is a really good web-app that does the job (e.g. CZcams, PayPal) and feels like using a native app. Camera and screen are great. UI is very responsive. Edge works well. I can't complain, really.

Hello, sadly the Mozo back cover was probably only an offer in my local DNA store when I wanted a black 950 but they only had white so I got a black Mozo cover. However I think they will sell the phone for 289 euros as long as they have it in stock and this included the dual-sim version also. Not sure if they sell the display dock.
Among others at least Gigantti.fi here is selling the 950 for 299 euros and have Mozo back covers for 44,95 euros which I think is still quite fair offer, but they seemed to have single-sim only.

Agree with most all of what you say, Martin. About time we had someone talking sense about the platform, rather than the usual doom-and-gloom. The 950 (xl actually) is my 5th(?) Windows phone, and I moved back to it from a brief spell with a Nexus6P. The killer features for me are wireless charging and being able to add 200GB of additional storage. A couple of things; if the plastic back plate really drives you crazy, Mozo makes a range of really high quality replacements that add a premium touch to the phone for a small outlay. I notice that you also mention poor sound from your phone; although not listed the Lumia range supports the aptX codec for cd-audio quality streaming over bt. With a supported receiver (like the Avantree Roxa) and a set of ext speakers) the output is much better than wired. Keep you the good work with the videos; really enjoying them

Wonder why NO for iris scanner. I don't find it gimmicky and also it's improved highly in accuracy now (L950XL RS 14388) if properly calibrated. It works well in any light conditions & from the distance of 1.5 feet (45 to 50cm) with high consistency. Phone isn't required to keep very close to the face as many suggest. This's required only when we wear sunglasses. Only complain is it doesn't unlocks phone immediately. Takes approx 1 to 1.5sec which isn't definitely a big deal due to that animation. And drains some more battery.

I was gifted a Galaxy S7 which I use now (its okay, I don't think there's been a more exciting Samsung phone since the S3 tbh). However, I can't bring myself to get rid of the Lumia. I update it and keep checking that one day the most popular apps will appear in the Store and I can return to Windows.
Windows 10 Mobile has more potential than any Android or Apple smartphone so I can relate to your excitement. Brilliant video btw.

I bought a Lumia 930 about 2 weeks before the 950 launched. It was a lot cheaper for that period, and hardware still keeps up, and the design is brilliant. But this video pretty much reflects what I think. It's not that I regret buying this 930, but I hadn't expected how much and how fast this platform has improved. And I think I struggled a bit with the pentile screen and cameras. ALSO, metal frame.
The next time I buy a phone will probably be after 2 years time. I'm looking forward to Microsoft releasing a very capable option that rivals against other Android flagships.

Glad to find a sensible assessment of the metal-as-a-phone-material design policy. And yeah the iris scanner has been one of the most off-putting things in considering a 950 purchase. A finger-print reader would have been great (either instead or in addition to the scanner). The new Galaxy Note 7 has both.

I moved away from windows phone a half year ago to follow the herd and go Android. I have a killer Sony 4k smart phone, but I have come to the conclusion that I hate the Android OS. Every screen feels like it was designed by a different commitee. I miss my Lumia 1520 sooooooo much. Logical layout, smooth navigation. I miss Cortana and all she did for me during my days with her. I can't wait for the Surface Phone. Now I'm in the market for the 950XL because I'm tired of Android. Hearing about the bugginess from the early release made me shy away. Yup, one of my favorite things about lumia phones is the back cover which is plastic or PVC and has a matte finish so fingerprints, scratches and even inks don't stick to it. My old lumia 520 has been scratched, dropped and dented but I still manage to fix it and still looks great. I totally agree that metal covers are overrated.

I picked one up off ebay for $199, unlocked it for 99 cents. Great upgrade over my 1520. I don't see the big deal over apps, the major ones are there. I think I only really use about 10 apps total, yeah, there are millions out there, and I have trouble remembering what each of them is for, so they just remain as wasted space on my phone. I think as a business phone it's perfect, and everything is synced on my laptop and all the pc that I logged into at work, so if I set something off my calendar, that's all synchronized and shown on my lockscreen of all my devices. Everything is backed up on the server, so all my text messages from years ago, contacts, all my pictures, etc... they all migrate to my new phone. One Note is awesome also, I put all of my things I need to remember in it, and yes, synced to all devices. Iphone and Android is for unproductive hipsters sipping their latte at Starbucks.

just watched thee of your videos back t back. never heard of ou before, your video popped up in the suggestions section of Awesome Tube on my 550. Really like how you say so many bad things about windows phones(which are unfortunately true too) and yet are so optimistic about it and as you said made a complete switch. so at the end I liked you and your videos, so had no choice but to hit the subscribe button. I too am planning to get a 950 xl for around 2200ood buy now that 0 INR. what do you suggest? is it a good buy now that it is so old? or should I wait for the uncertain surface phone?
because I donot have the liberty to spend lots of money. the 950 xl was launched in my country for 55000 INR and now it has dropped to 22000 INR so I am buying it becasuse of vaue for money. any new windows device, even hp elite x3 or alcatel idol 4s will definitely cost around the same 50000 inr, that is if they ever come to india. so I was definitely considrung 950xl. also have u tried the mozo covers?how are they? ae they durable? is the stck back cover durable? thans and happy new year!!
