I've always thought I had to "find my style" now I just draw what I like, how I like. I find that people have recognised my drawings, and can notice a consistent style across images, even though the genre is different.

I'm going to have to watch this video a few times just to make sure it sets in. You really help my mindset shift with art when I'm feeling unproductive and lost

If you don’t feel like painting it’s just as fine to take a break and rest like with any other skill you can develop. To make art you need experiences in life to make art about. Trying different styles can also be a way to unlock curiosity that leads to inspiration for some. But it’s also sometimes just fun to play with new techniques.

It such an amazing feeling to see someone with the same mindset come so far in the art community. When I was still in art academy, my teachers were always drilling me to find my style... whatever that. Today, I do what I want, experiment with whatever I feel fits the message of the work, and Mikko said it so well: a style should fit the message.
This was very inspiring. Thanks for sharing! 😀

I think I got lucky with my art teachers because they were always encouraging me to do new things. It was scary to ask for a permission to do my final exhibition digitally (it was an oil painting school) but they really fully supported my choice and even gave my work an awesome spot at the exhibition.

I think style is always evolving. I was doing the same old Sargent, Fechin, etc style works for years and realizes that though my skill was high I was basically one in a multitude of people doing the same exact thing that has been done to death. So I put down my oils and picked up some Poscas. I forced myself to improvise and paint with unbridled emotion.
Now I am getting back into my oils and figuring how to rein in the pure energy and emotion of neo-expressionism and get the color and light of postimpressionism without all the reliance on color theory. Trying to steal what I want from specific artists and distill the emotions and things I see in the subject. Trying to get to the essence of what it is in the subject that drew me in the first, distill it to its purest most engaging form, and putting it onto the canvas in the most energetic and direct way possible.
People got mad when I stopped doing mostly realistic works. Then I started a new channel doing the more neo-expressionistic works and people started liking it. Now I am putting more of the newer style out there and some people really hate that the style has changed 🤷🏻‍♂️ Make the art you want to see. Don’t worry about others and what they want. If they don’t like what you do then they can make their own.

Pivoting is always difficult. I have upsetting advice for this but it’s annoying because it takes a lot of time.
Showing the random experiments and doodles between you bigger projects teaches the audience to see (and maybe even accept) variation in your work.
I’ve been doing the full u-turns for so long that I don’t really get the “do the old stuff!” comments anymore. It takes patience and bravery to show that stuff to the world because experimentation by default is the first step in learning process to anything new.
However I think it’s worth it to keep my relationship with my art positive and something that excites and terrifies me.
When I started doing this piece in a live stream I had no idea what or how the painting would happen but I’m experienced enough in seatbelt-free yolo-ism that these days I can even enjoy the chaos of those situations.

Also, thank you for sharing your journey. I think it's really important for beginner artists to understand that aspect of art styles, as I don’t see it talked about that often online or in learning materials.

Thank you so much for this! It is just so perfect and timely. This evening I sat down with my notebook and wrote down my favorite styles and I was honestly as shocked as I was a little bit terrified at my eclecticism: I love simple, colorful cartoon styles as much as I love oil paint realism, abstract color worlds, and dark and light themes...
Because I haven't (yet) experimented with all these in action, it is hard to intellectually wrap my head around how these will all come together. But your video gives me courage to explore. Perhaps, in time, they will consolidate in a way I cannot imagine. Or, perhaps, they will all stand alone as part of my voice, but my "soul" will be present in all of them. It takes a lot of guts to take a jump and have faith that, even if I can't see it yet, it will still be recognized as "me" (even if only by myself).
Once again, this is a HUGELY important video, thank you!

Kiitos Mikko. The universe sent you to me again at the right time. As a creative soul, I call myself “Between Color and Words” because I enjoy writing as much as I enjoy playing with paint. I also work for an online shop in the creative and scrapbooking area. I LOVE trying out new materials and techniques. Some things always accompany me - like art journaling and some I only take a few elements with me. The themes that I like to bring into the world are important to me and I always felt bad about not being so active on social media and having this smooth and perfect demeanor. At the weekend I made a meditation, where at the end I stand in my gallery and look at my works. And should I tell you something? I couldn't make out anything specific. I just saw colors and my novel came to mind. That made me so insecure. I kept telling myself, I have to be able to see something clearly. You reminded me that nothing has to... that I have to continue to trust my process, even if it's slower than everyone else's. I'm the type of person who wants to understand the big picture and that doesn't exclude creativity.
Thanks to your video (the otter is so cute and I love the colors) I feel better and more motivated than ever to continue on my path, using the artform I like to share my thoughts with the people.
    Big thanks from Germany

Thank you so much for your advice. I think that one's style is less important than being true to what you wish to express through your work, even if that goes ''against'' a consistent visual branding.

Great video, Mikko! Having committed to an art routine for a couple of years now, I feel like I am now beginning to organically recognize a “style” in my art. It's awesome that my art is visible somewhere out there for people to see. The way you describe finding style sounds healthy. It starts peeking through as a theme of some kind, and you can get closer to it by just making more art-almost like an archaeologist salvaging a dinosaur bone by brushing away the sand slowly.

Thank you Mikko for this sound advice! I love trying new techniques and I'm a senior newbie and have felt pressure to stick to one form. But I have a lot of ideas floating in my head and nothing has felt true to me yet. I also have too many urgent distractions that I must achieve, so I had to temporarily suspend my art adventures, but I know I will come back to it when I'm ready. I knew there was a reason why you appeared on my feed! ❤ such a cute...otter? Or is it a beaver? 😅

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  Před měsícem

I don’t think there’s anyone but you putting that pressure on yourself. You don’t need to “stick” to one but you can if that gets you to make more art. It’s all about finding what works for you and forgetting what the traditional idea of an artist is. You’re not here to perform a role for anyone just be yourself.
I’m not saying being yourself is easy or happens overnight. But I do think it leads into a happier creative life in the end.

@@angrymikko you're right, beavers have a flat tail 😂 And I guess because I'm a tutorial junkie, there are a lot of videos about "finding your style" and I've been on a course where fan students produced copy art of the teacher who only focused on art like theirs (so you weren't critiqued equally). I'm a very horizontal learner even in other non art activities but I also realise that I need to keep looking for something I really like doing rather than be stuck in the trap of pleasing others.

I'm still finding my style, and trying to get back into art more seriously. But this video helped so much! I have experience with some 2d i 3d programs related to Architecture, and as someone interested in drawing fantasy landscapes / buildings, i can use my 3d knoweledge to create my paintings! Oh and I love your work in this video, it's so colourful and lovely 😊😊😊

Glad I could help! I’m a big fan of sketchup but even for really complicated city scenes from any camera angle; all one really needs is a few boxes for reference. There’s no need to be a 3d expert to get a lot of mileage from the basics. Same with many skills really. It’s the combination of techniques that can unlock a huge amount of possibilities once you start putting their potential to use.

I have to confess that sometimes it looks like I’m doing something but I’m really just slapping on some more colours without thinking about it. The thing with this style is that only the majority of brush strokes need to be approximately in the right place. The rest is just a “party area”.

Try it without it first. You can’t get that ease of painting back once it’s on there. But if you mostly only draw, then it might be an acceptable tradeoff.
