    I've always assumed in the alternate universe where u/d are swapped that you'd be making the opposite video.
    Thank you for making this! it's something I bring up a lot when coaching new players into brackets.

      I saw a knockoff DDR game with up and down swapped. It was horrible

    One alternative theory is just that the common orientation is logical for being right-footed, which most people are. The DL/UR split allows right-footed players hit the most difficult arrow with their dominant foot. It's also possible the order of the receptors was even designed with that in mind.

    This literally is the reason why I face left when I play heel-toe. It's how my brain figured out how to not confuse the up and down arrows as a kid.

    I do bracket in the opposite direction when saving energy - I’m left-handed and always kind of attributed it to that. You’re probably right about the reasons.

    I face away from the guy playing next to me, so I don't have to watch him AAA it in my face

    AKA I have a hard time parsing L/U and R/D as one foot brackets bc they are visually separated

    I default to facing right most of the time and I am right handed… but I actually do practice hardcore doublestepping and heel toeing in both directions because I find it is a very useful skill

    I face right! I'm left handed so it always felt normal to me. It's also why right arrows always break first on my setups lmao
    I prefer facing right also because i can alternate feet for left/down while doing a staircase to BS the rest of a failed song.

    When I get the Great I go no-bar, and I think playing no bar will help most players not do stuff like this, realizing spins and crossovers and using your left foot to hit right panel, or hitting up arrow backwards with your right heel, I use the points of the arrows to remind me of my relative direction. Like a left to right crossover, you end off facing the right, because the last arrow in the step in pointing to the right

    • @lei
      @lei  Před 5 měsíci

      I think it's not so much the direction you're facing when it comes to crossovers but where your true position is on the pad relative to what is being shown on the screen that there's a disconnect that needs to be trained

    When I'm not playing DDR, I sometimes find myself pondering the layout of the arrow display, where up and down are positioned. I wonder what it would be like if the arrows scrolled horizontally rather than vertically, or if there were some kind of 3D arrow scrolling system instead.
    You know, on the subject of symmetry, there are Dance Dance Revolution variants that are more symmetrical, like those that use the up left and up right diagonal arrows. But then there are so many arrows scrolling in, it's a mess.

    This has always been my assumption too. L and D 'feel' closer than L and U because they're physically closer on screen. This is also a big part of why middle 4 in PIU doubles is so weird to learn - the physical distance between blue and red is the same, but one pair is adjacent and the other has a gap of two! And don't get me started on Drummania...
    A related phenomenon I wouldn't mind questions about is 'you hit a jump, then an up (or down) on an unrelated column, which foot do you use and why?'

    • @lei
      @lei  Před 5 měsíci

      looking at the layout and yeah that must be so confusing lol

  • @Nifterific
    @Nifterific Před 5 měsíci +1

    I have a hard time with left/up and right down brackets for this reason. Also if there is a gap in the arrows that starts on up I have a tendency to start off on my right foot and if it’s down I start with my left foot. I’ve blown a few PBs and PFCs because of this, sometimes even knowing what’s coming I can’t help myself. It’s small stuff like that that stops players at my skill level (not even sure what to call it, I’m far from a beginner, I would say past intermediate or average, but I’m definitely not a top level player) from getting to that next level.

    I feel like it would be difficult to read if the arrows were in the center of the screen, matching the layout of the dance pad, and the arrows to press came in from the top bottom and sides of the screen. in a way it almost shows the limitation of 2D 3D reality to me, where I would want the up arrow to come from the bottom of the screen moving upwards, and the down arrow to come from the top of the screen, moving down, but that would cause a lot visual crossover on the screen itself. or maybe not a limitation of reality, i think i am overthinking it, haha. rather, i think that if the arrows to press came from the center, and the four arrow panels were on the 4 sides of the screen, but that would be difficult to read too, especially if the screen is larger and the viewing distance is close.

    I blame iidx for tricking my brain into seeing UL/DR brackets as a 13/24 chord that you hit with one hand.

  • @celanimaddr

    def a weird side effect of the game’s design, I remember a non ddr player once asking me why the arrows don’t appear from the center and go outwards bc the up/down orientation of the receptors were confusing lol

    • @lei
      @lei  Před 5 měsíci +1

      that would be even more confusing lol I can't spread my vision that far out

    I face the right when I do let go of the bar, personally since I am left handed and use my right brain/side for support
