FILM DESCRIPTION:
Los Angeles high school teacher Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos) is being hassled by tough students like Angel Guzman (Lou Diamond Phillips). But Jaime is also pressured by his bosses, who want him to control his raucous classroom. Caught in the middle, he opts to immerse his students in higher math. After intensive study, his students ace California's calculus test, only to learn that their scores are being questioned. They'll have to retake the exam in order to quiet the critics.

My high school math teacher was one of his students and he adopted Mr. Escalante’s teaching methods. We would have tutoring after school till 5, class an hour before school and Saturday school. He made it fun because he provided all his students with snacks, support, etc.
And to think in this year 2021 Garfield CANCELED the math program built by this man, Jaime Escalante, for being "too difficult." You have to wonder about the woke culture. We're going backwards...

Can't imagine how much the crew and the cast were laughing while doing that scene -- Phillips had great comic timing.
For the record, they call him “Kimo” cause it’s short for “Kimosabe” which they’re using as a fun way to say “know it all” since “sabe” means “he knows” in spanish
EDIT: to clarify, there’s a scene early on where (I think Angel) says, “heyyyy, Que no sabe todo?!” To say like “aye doesnt this guy know everything!” and Que no sabe sounds like kimosabe. Kimosabe is definitely also some indigenous guy… that’s what makes it funny. That’s not why they call him that lol

I'm a math teacher and I used to show this movie to my kids in class. When I taught AP Calc, I showed this film right before the exam. The class loved it! Still one of my favorite "math" movies of all time! Olmos and Phillips are stellar.
My HS call teacher did the same in 1997
My teacher did this before our exam as well. As you can see, I’m still coming back to relive the beauty that is this movie.
You were fortunate and awsome. I took math way before this movie came out and there was no technology to show it, even if it had come out before my classes.
I saw this movie when I was 12 and decided I would take AP Calculus. 6 years later I got a 5 on the exam. Jaime Escalante is one of my heroes, and Olmos did a fantastic job portraying him

My calculus teacher told me that if I learned and understood math and statistics I would always have a job. He was correct. If you bear down early you get rewarded 100 times over later on.

I saw this in high school. It didn't improve my dedication to math, but did make me appreciate the difference between a bad teacher and a great teacher. I am still grateful to some of the great teachers I had in high school.

While many may use money and have forms of it, in a strictly bartering community or society like we had in the past, money would not be known or accepted as a trade of goods for services or services for services isn't using money but bartering.

@@aaronmontgomery2055 at this time and in this setting, money DOES track societal value. There is nothing you can say to deny this, but of course personal values can differ from universal. Calculus incorrectly applied, however, will yield no value. This value is most often shown through dollar bills, and was shown through gold hundreds of years ago, etc. etc.
I can solve math problems in a cave and yield no value to society. I can also use it to design a bridge. Context is everything. There were many famous, successful and virtuous individuals throughout history who knew no math, and many who understood logic without math. This is the lie that schools will tell you, as what you as an individual will need to learn will depend on your objectives in life.
When younger, like most teens, I was UTTERLY USELESS at math, even mental arithmetic. Didn't care for it.
Then, I saw this film.
2 years later, I was at University studying mathematics.

@@shrapnel77 Maybe, but that's only for those who were really undisciplined to begin with. At least in my opinion. Enjoying at least your last semester in high school and slacking off a bit isnt necessarily going to mean you're going to struggle to graduate college, esp if you're naturally a good learner and not lazy in general. I'm pretty sure once college starts many students would know they have to start fresh in a new setting. They'll know the difference between that environment and high school right away. It's just up to them to have the right priorities when they get there. Most would imo, but some wouldn't. But I think it has little to do with their attitude slacking off in their last stretch of high school, which is supposed to be a celebratory period in one's teenage life.

That for the majority of it, does not require calculus, but sometimes it does. What's your point. Don't just join the pop bandwagon of "school calculus bad". And yeah read about "calculus in gardening" sometime. Maybe you'll have your own opinions after that.

Math was never my strong suit and even though I watched this movie I still only got through algebra 1 when I graduated from a continuation school, however after becoming an online salesman and getting into the stock market this movie actually gave me some pointers on how to understand things a bit better
The movie did take some liberties though, it took him a lot of time and work with the students to get that kind of success. But with effort everything is possible.
My dad took over for him when he left. Sadly enough 2 years later they changed the principal and the new principal didn’t support the program and dad couldn’t keep doing it

J Rod, In adittion to what eddi tex said, Having the AP Calc under their belts would make them more competitive applicants for the top universities.
If you think about the circumstances they're in, taking the test in high school would be a huge plus for them. They all come from a poorly performing school, thus taking the test and passing it while they're still in high school would greatly improve their chances of getting into good schools. Plus I imagine that they'll save a bit of money by having to take one less course.
Those high school AP classes would actually give you 6 credit hours. It was a 2 semester class.

All you need to learn calculus is, calculus=derivative=instantaneous rate, x vs t is the position of a falling ball, it’s derivative is velocity and the derivative of that is acceleration meters >> m/s >> m/s^2

I do believe it’s easier for the younger generation to do well in school because all the tools are there to succeed and they are tech savvy and get it done however they think too narrowly and can’t think outside the box of course not all but most. Most students now a days won’t read a book if it ain’t assigned to them. Data can back this up with numbers that show that less people are reading books because one main issue and that is attention span the average kid today is multitasking. I witnessed first hand with a younger coworker who is 19 and Iam 25 she does it well but is constantly distracted because of this. We need to explore and read about things that are not just focused on our college majors.

Crazy how much a teacher that want you to succeed helps. I was a great student up until about 7th-8th grade. Started to really fall off in math and just barely had a D. I couldn’t figure out the work. My teacher asked me to come to class during lunch one day and gave me some extra help. I jumped from an D to an A+. Shame I couldn’t keep teacher like that through highschool. Might have come out with some extra credits when I started college.

That is the way you would pronounce it, if you read it with Spanish vowel sounds and stress rules. And probably closer to the original Latin word, than it has evolved today.

If I were to have a calculus class this year , that would be my first question just how Angel asks it just to see if he/she knows the reference.
I think it should be a requirement upon employment of calculus teachers that they know this movie and to not know it should command immediate dismissal

@@cornfednebraskaneer yeah spelling mistake on my part, and the kids in that movie were dealing with ALOT more than poor academics. Besides, they can totally be expelled for being bad at math... and English... and French... and other subjects if the nature of the difficulty can either not be helped by the institution (which is what happened with one student that was at the school I worked for) or if the lack of grades was due to a consistent attitude problem. It's not the first resort but it is the last one.
of course that's just general incompetence, the types of kids that are in these schools are violent which any private school would expel them for on the spot.
