@dj1200 You shouldn't feel stupid. They wanted him because he did look very much like Desi Arnaz. He was also a child prodigy on the drums. Notice they never gave little Ricky screen credit, very likely because they wanted people to think he WAS their child. They couldn't use Desi Jr. because they wanted the baby Lucy had to get older faster, so they had to hire a child to play him. I heard Desi Jr. say this in an interview.
@dj1200 If you notice the closing credits on "I Love Lucy," they never listed the credits as almost all sitcoms do. An announcer comes on and does a voice-over stating the names of the guest cast. This made it easier for them not to credit Richard Keith as Little Ricky. The announcer merely never mentioned him. He looked so much like Desi, many people assumed that he was the baby Lucy gave birth to, without stopping to think that the baby Lucy gave birth to could not be this age this soon. For some odd reason, this is the way Lucy and Desi wanted it.
Just got done listening to little Ricky but his real name is Keith but anyway just got done listening him play the drums for David and the Giants so yup if ur wondering if he still plays the drums he does and he is very good.
Lucy was born on August 6,1911. That means that she was 40 years old when they started I Love Lucy in September 1951. Certainly one of the prettiest and sweetest stars of all time. I was born in '55 and remember the first time I saw her. It was a morning rerun in 1959, the one where she was flown by helicopter to the cruise ship that she missed. I said, " She looks like mommy". My Mom was a beauty too. Mom is still with us, she's 86 now.
Excellent memory Bob. Glad your mom is doing well. I’m a 1952 baby and my earliest memory is Lucy in the chocolate factory. It is my firm belief there is an ILL episode for every part of life: NYC apartment, outgrowing it when kids and dogs and cats arrive, moving to the country where the silence is deafening and even as aspect of show business. Great show, great writers, great memories.
I never realized that Lucy was around 38 years old when she had Ricky! Which was really old back then. In the episodes where it was black and white she appears younger than mid 30's.
Of course she looked great, back then people actually got off their asses and did something. If this was on TV now she'd be covered in make up, be criticized for her weight and age, and just not look at all like she does here. Back in the day women could look beautiful even with out make up. Today that's true too, but so many have skin problems because poor diet and feeling self conscious of others they just pile it on.
That little boy that played the part of little Ricky was not her real son in real life, it was one of the women that worked on the show son that they use in the snow. after the lady had the baby he played the part of little Ricky, you can read it in their biography his real name was Keith thibodanus
wendym1234 Actually she was 41 in January 1953 when she gave birth to Desi Jr. Lucille Ball’s Birthday is August 6, 1911 so it’s a very simple math calculation.
…can you call my mommy & daddy too? Praying for my daughter, who i haven’t seen since? Box me up TOO! I’m no puppy, i’m a Dad, Father, & STILL looking for my divorce decree REDEMPTION TOO in 2024!
When he said maybe our house will get bigger too. Damn they were hinting they were gonna move to the country and have a bigger house to live in. Wow. Lol

Good old Fred he was just a big old softie! Everybody eventually fell for the dog! A bit of sweet nostalgia!

Fred: You can't have a dog in this apartment
Ricky: It's only a tiny little dog
Lucy: Yeah, Fred we not gonna let it grow very big
I loved how everyone broke being with that dog lol he was so cute esp when he was licking Lucy's face awww
Actually Little Ricky was smart and whether or not he knew Fred was going to talk to him.
I love when people name dogs after people names.
When I see this little guy with his puppy, it really cheers me up. I love dogs AND little kids and I really needed this today.
little ricky was def listening in their conversation that's why he named the dog fred lol what a smart lil kid there lol

Everything about this show was perfection.
@Rosemarie Plant I think he was a very appropriate looking kid for Lucy and Ricky Ricardo.

You are very welcome!
Little Ricky knew what he was doing. He inherited his mother's scheming, manipulative ways... only he was better at it! XD
Pretty good about the lizard jumping out to get away from the crowd. :-)
They all fall in love with him.😍

How lovely !!! Justo to think they were a real family unit.
Clever little boy. And he didn't even know it!
Smart move to save the puppy! :)
Cairn terriers are so cute. That's the same breed as Toto in Wizard of Oz. I don't see many of those breeds around.
Fred was a beautiful dog
When Ever Happened To that Little dog Anyway ?
Rest in peace, sweet puppy!
LOL, I wish I got away with that when I was Little Ricky's age!!!

Barbara Fischbach How big was I Love Lucy back then? Does any show compare to it now? I’m a millennial and this is my favorite show!
Raul Shah ILL was so big that toilets all over the country flushed at the same time during commercials that lowered the water pressure!
Fortunately Cairns don't grow to be big dogs and do quite well with walkies in apartments.
well there's her problem! make him responsible for the care of the pets.. she's doing it all.
@The Random Reign of Vanilla uh huh wanna bet? and he doesnt do anything!!
Old grumpy Fred is a big softy. 😆❤️
