  • Locked away in a semi-secret former army quartermaster building surrounded in a crumbling old fort, the Detroit Historical Society's Collections Resource Center is a car-person's dream. It features priceless automobiles from The Motor City's rich history, all preserved in constantly-filtered clear plastic bubbles - many formerly owned by automotive celebrities like Cadillac's Henry Leyland, Ford/Chrysler's Lee Iacocca, and so many more. I luckily had a chance to visit the unbelievable collection; here's what I saw. Read the full story on The Autopian.

There';s something delightfully retro-futuristic feeling about seeing all those midcentury prototype vehicles in clear bubbles preserved like that

Is the collection at Fort Wayne? It's a shame that it's not open to the public.

I wonder, how long does it take to cocoon a car in a bubble? How much work to get it out?

They just unzip at one end, so probably only about a minute. (As long as you've got one or two extra people lifting the loose bubble away from the car, so it doesn't get caught.)
