- Land Rover Discovery crashes into a tree on the Serridge stage of the Wyedean Rally 2008. Although the crew drove on they were forced to retire due to damage caused by the crash.

I've driven two different Land Rovers of the same age of this one. I can say with absolute confidence that this is just a suicidal idea, rallying one.

@@josh256m8 I drive a 2007 Defender and on high speeds in a muddy forest road they become very tail heavy when you turn and skids quite a bit unless you lock the diffs

To all those commenting about how unsuitable the discovery is for rallying, then take note of how many have been used in the Camel Trophy, the Paris-Dakar etc, this isn’t your Chelsea tractor that you’re seeing here-this one will have been modified extensively (as all competition cars are required to be) and I’m sure he’s not the first car to get out of shape on that yump. Sure, it’s not a conventional rally car, but who cares? The guy’s doing something different and if you don’t admire the guy’s massive balls in flinging that Disco about while the V8 is roaring then maybe you’re watching the wrong videos.
If you don't want to be upset by the comments, maybe you are in the wrong place.

Nah, I get the Camel Trophy and stuff, but a rally is a fast paced race, and the Doscovery is a heavy vehicle. So you cant change directions as fast, it keeps its inertia a lot more than a light car, so yeah. You can rally, but it will never be a really fast rally vehicle unless you do a intensive weight reduction.
Ita like the Jeep Cherokee a guy uses to autocross. You can, he actually does it and it is cool. But you cant expect top tier performance because of its intrinsic caracteristics.
Perhaps you didn’t understand the context in which my comment was written? if you did, you would understand the comment wasn’t arguing the Discovery’s suitability as a rally car, yes it’ll be heavier than pretty much anything else on the event, but it’ll still be lighter, faster and stronger than a road going Discovery and a whole lot more fun to drive as a result. I’m pretty sure these guys are fully aware of their car’s limitations and haven’t got finishing first as a priority. This isn’t the WRC, it’s a clubman event-have you attended a clubman rally? enjoyment and doing something different is what clubman rallying is about and you’ll see some pretty unconventional choices of car at these events. Life would be boring if everyone stuck to what’s ‘conventional’. Here’s an example, my own car is a Suzuki Jimny that I’ve modified extensively, it has a bigger more powerful engine and I removed the car’s 4x4 ability-transfer box, front diff, half shafts and front prop shaft all to reduce weight, thereby increasing performance. Why did I do all this? Because I enjoyed doing it and it’s unconventional, exactly the same reason why these guy’s are rallying a Discovery 😁

Agree on the last bit, but my family had a V8 D1, 300000km+, still pretty reliable. And it was drifted -on gravel, of course ;)
