Ani DiFranco: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • Nov. 8, 2017 | Stephen Thompson --
In a career spanning nearly three decades, Ani DiFranco's music has evolved in countless ways, reflecting everything from a major relocation (from New York to New Orleans) to her acquisition of a funky, shimmery backing band. But she's also kept her core values intact, from her outspoken commitment to progressive social causes to her strenuously maintained independence from the machinery of the music industry.
For her Tiny Desk debut, DiFranco brought a hell of a backing band, with drummer Terence Higgins and singer/violinist Jenny Scheinman joined by none other than Ivan Neville on keyboards. Together, they lend a slithery underpinning of funk to three songs that stretch across much of DiFranco's career. After opening with "Dithering," from 2014's Allergic To Water, DiFranco introduces "Play God" (from this year's Binary) with a monologue about reproductive rights and gender relations; later, she and her band close with 1998's "Swan Dive," which she calls "an early attempt at a happy song."
For DiFranco, now 20 albums into a fruitful career, happy songs come easier than they used to; like anyone who's done anything steadily for 28 years, she's in a different place than she used to be. But on a fundamental level, she's the same tough and uncompromising singer-songwriter she's always been.
    Set List
    "Dithering"
    "Play God"
    "Swan Dive"
    MUSICIANS
Ani DiFranco (vocals, guitar); Jenny Scheinman (violin, vocals); Ivan Neville (keyboards); Terence Higgins (drums)

I was a big Tori fan by the early 2000s, had Ani's first album, early PJ Harvey stuff, but I feel like I was missing context to embed it in. If you have recommendations (or anyone who reads this, I know I'm years late!) I'd love some.

After all these years I've yet to fully grasp the mix of hope and sadness, yearning and triumph she's able to make us feel. Pure artistry in its highest form.

Jose Rosales I know you dont know me and nor do I you... However i want you to know i am sending Love and prayers your way! Dont give up, you are stronger than you think and i see this because it took strength to post here! You deserve these rights as does everyone else.
You deserve it just as every human does. Know you are worth more than you might think right now and I want to remind you!😊
I come from the stance of every one deserves to be treated with love, kindness, compassion and empathy no matter if we agree, have the same beliefs, wants, etc. It is not a luxury but the rights of every human to feel these virtues. I refuse to harbor hate or judgement. That's not my job.... my job in life is to have kindness, compassion, empathy, love for all living things. It doesnt cost a thing to spread this to those in need. Thats how i choose to live. Have a great day my friend!

I'm fully aware the first 3 albums are the church, gospel and worship of her mother-daughter-ghost incarnation, but we have to admit Swan Dive, even though post-success, is the choir of this religion. Been in love with her soul since 2000, and slowly she's made it to #2 on my all time greats list just under Prince. And, I've listened to over 35,000 albums from every genre that resonates, which are many more than not.

Red Rocks is a special place for sure!! I've been fortunate enough to see many shows there during my life. The first was Phish way back in like 1996ish, I was 17. Phish was never allowed back at Red Rocks again after that weekend... Morrison population 500 didn't appreciate the many thousands of followers the band had... camped everywhere! And even though I got in later than I wanted, I ran into a friend from Florida in the second row middle who was saving a seat for no one in particular, so I lucked out! (Seeing Phish in my 30s was a whole different experience, and not the fun it was when I was younger). Besides Ani, I loved seeing Michael Franti there too! They are starting to sell tix to shows there again for later this year... socially distanced I guess.

I like how this original sound and cool blend of folky songwriting with some funky neo soul harmony and groove is completely ignored by everyone in this comment section just because her songs are ABOUT something. Why do people prefer songs about nothing, DONT PREACH TO ME, well maybe dont listen if her views make you so uncomfortable

Well, this is my cue to add that Ian Neville is absolutely brilliant back there. He's doing fills perfectly while laying down a killer rhythm that's true to Ani's very distinctive style. I commented above that I'm going to be seeking out more of his work.

I came waltzing into this video with a swagger and a confidence where i was like ooo and Ani tiny desk! I was thinking Grey maybe firedoor (Living in clip one of my all time fav albums) and when I saw the songs I was like... hmm I don't know these songs. So I sat quietly in the back and reacquainted myself with these 3 songs. I prefer her live as I always love hearing her commentary. Turns out I know Swan Dive yay for me happy dance awesome concert

Much enjoyment has come from Ani DiFranco and made me think about shark-infested waters in society today. She put a spell on me. I like it. A lot.

Legend. Ani if you see these words, know that when I saw that you were on Tiny Desk this morning I had a visceral twinge of excitement. I watch CZcams every day and this reaction is unprecedented for me. Never stop. Never change. What another posting here called preachy, I call a plate full genuine caring with three extra helpings of "willing to do something about it." I don't always agree with your views but I do believe that if we were all willing to put our necks out and make a stand for the betterment of others as you do, this world will be a better place. I wonder if your greatest legacy will ironically not be your music but your courageous example of "human." Thank you Ani

they are all awesome musicians.. but love love loving ivan neville jamming on this! :) my 1st intro to him was back in 2009 (or 10?) when i went to nola for jazzfest revelry the first time. the nevilles are incredible-- they all play all over town for free with all sorts of other musicians for weeks straight... never-ending party ahhh

I remember the first time I heard Ani, I stole one of my sister's CDs because I didn't have any of my own to play on my discman on the way to South Dakota and I can't thank her enough for that first reveling, and all it's reckoning. It's my favorite wonder, saw her in 2012 and I almost cancelled actually going due to suffering from chronic anxiety but went anyways. She walked on stage and I felt my whole entirety awake in gratitude and I moved my entire body intuitively perfectly to join her
