- I was very fortunate recently to very quickly compare a vintage RE-201 against its modern Boss compact form. None of these items belong to me unfortunately!
I'm running a System-8 sequencer into both on the same settings.
Now to be fair, the tape in the RE-201 has not been changed for a long time, the motor is a little bit inconsistent, and some of the dials need recalibrating, so on certain settings the difference was too wide to be a fair comparison.
Considering how affordable the Boss one is I think it sounds fantastic and gives you that cool Space Echo vibe without any of the hassle! Though I certainly wouldn't turn down the real one ;)
You deserve more views; your videos are well-done and are very helpful. Keep going!
both sound great, I think the re20 sound a bit darker in this demo and honestly I can see a huge use for both units.
The tape in the RE-201 was quite old, so perhaps not a fair comparison but I think the RE-20 sounded great considering its price!
that RE 201 is unreal. Wish I could go back 30 years and slap myself and say "smarten up!" and have gotten one of these when they weren't over $1000. It is so warm and deep sounding and although it's not a Binson Echorec, it comes pretty damn close, close enough for me
Both effects are great
I think the RE-201 KILLS the RE-20. The depth and vibe (call it what you want) that the real thing brings is soooo much greater. At least to my ears.
Tobias Kågström I’m right there with you Tobias... re20 tries but does not get there
I looove the re20!! Do you think the System 8 worth all the price difference from the system-1? Thanks
Sounds like the RE-20 sample rate is choking the source's harmonics compared to the 201. It's intended for guitars so sample quality is really low.
The old one ... sounds better ... more frequenzy
