    Ueno is an area in north-west central Tokyo, near Asakusa. It's a little older and less shiny and modern than some other areas. It's famous for the park, with Shinobazu Pond, Ueno Zoo and several museums. It's also known for pandas, because of the giant pandas at the zoo. Ameyokocho is a popular street by the train tracks, with market stalls selling all sorts of household goods, fresh fish, fruit and street food - a good place to get Japanese food snacks!

    2:58 those seed pods are lotus seed pods. So in the summer it means there are lotuses on the pond.

    I have stayed in Ueno 3 times and never made it to the park. I always planned on strolling through but something always seemed to come up. Even the locals told me it well worth a visit to the park. And now I know. Thanks for your Vlog! Much appreciate it!

    So nice to see that there is something interesting to see and do in Ueno. I’m going to Japan for the first time later this year and have a hotel booked in that area for my stay in Tokyo.

      There's a few other people in the comments who've stayed there and they said it was great! Cheaper to stay in than the west side of Tokyo, and good connections at the station. Have a great trip!! :-)

    Uneo is one of my favourite places to visit, you can do so much there in one day. We like to go shopping in uneo. There is always something going on, when we left there was a food festival in the park last weekend, but it was packed. There were children’s choirs singing as well. It was a lovely Sunday.

    I stayed there when I went to Japan in March. Great area and close to everything. Only problem was travelling towards shinjuku was a pain if your trying to avoid peak hour. I hear the Ueno Park is a great place to see cherry blossoms but I missed it as I left on the very day they blossomed.

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  Před 5 lety

      Yes, Tokyo's so huge, it can be quite a long way across the city. When I was staying in Shinjuku, it took a good 45 mins to get across to the SkyTree area! Cherry blossoms can be tricky to catch - and they don't last very long either (that's why people get so excited about them!) :-)

    We just came back from Japan, spent 3 nights at Ueno. We love the area, easy to get & go from & to Narita Airport, loads of Izakaya 🏮 near Ameyoko market at night and in the morning loads of places to get breakfast too. JR station & metro station + keisei station, so very convenient to go places. Prizes of hotels not as dear as Shinjuku or Tokyo area so it’s really worth for the money.

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  Před 5 lety +1

      Glad you enjoyed it! I've never stayed in that area so thanks for sharing :-) I'd like to go back at night (and find all those izakaya!) - places often have a different atmosphere in the evening so it'd be great to see it come alive in a different way.

  • @smithjames058
    @smithjames058 Před 5 lety +1

    Our nearest metro stop was on one of the lines into Ueno. We were staying just to the west of Tokyo Dome City, And Lidabashi.
    Went through it many times for connections, without realising that is was itself a worthy place to stop and look around!! Kids wanna go again, so I think that it’s a big possibility!

    The trees along the causeway through Ueno pond are indeed cherry trees. They were probably gorgeous a few weeks ago. And all the dead sticks are the remnants of the lotus plants that cover that section of the pond.

    I walked all over Ueno park, but never saw a lake... So jealous, and bow?... How do I miss a giant lake? I did walk around Amayokocho, and from their walked to Tokyo Skytree. Where I ate dinner next to the Sumida River, and ran into Norm from Tokyp Lens. Ahhh... memories... I need to go back. I am planning a trip to Matsuyama.

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  Před 5 lety +1

      Ah I watch Norm's videos too! :-) He lived in that area. I don't know how you missed the lake!! 😂 Although there is a whole other side to the park too. Are you the sort of person who walks miles when you're on holiday too? I like walking between places because you see so much more.

    • @Gantorin

      @@cakeswithfaces Sorry, did not see your reply until now. I got off the train at the Ueno station, snd walked a bit until I saw the park. I think I took the Yamanote line... My free train pass was still active. I walked aroud for hours, and saw a HUGE clearing which I think was the zoo enterance. I did not go further than that. So maybe the lake was past that, and I just did not continue. Fushimi Inari sprained my ankle, so walking was hard for me. But, I did it anyways. I accientally met Norm (Tokyo Lens) at the Sumida River. Hung out, I was in one of his videos, and then stayed to eat by the river for skytree lights. I met up with Norm for dinner and a few beers. Awesome guy. He showed me a few of his favorite roof top locations over the Yamanote line. Good dude... Showed me a life time of fun. Beautiful park from what I saw.

      I haven't heard great things about the zoo - it's an old-fashioned zoo so some of the enclosures are small and concrete, and not great for the animals. So maybe go for one of the museums! The science museum (Miraikan) in Odaiba is really good - you can go in a replica of the space station and see Asimo the Honda robot!

    Tokyo National Museum and several other museums and galleries, as well as the shrine and temple, in Ueno Park, look as though they will occupy a couple of my days in Tokyo.
    I'm planning to base my first visit between Ueno and Asakusa, so Senso-ji and Kuramae's craft shops should be within walking distance one way, while a stroll across Ueno Koen will take me to Yanesen on the other side.
    I just hope Shinobazu-ike looks more beautiful in the autumn when it might be covered in lily-pads.
