- A relaxing place to stroll around picturesque Japanese streets in Tokyo. Exploring Yanesen / Yanaka, including cat-spotting along Yanaka Ginza, beautiful Nezu Shrine and Snake Road!
If you're looking for chill places in Tokyo to get away from the busy, craziness of the city, Yanesen is the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon strolling around. It's a little off the beaten track, and a good place to visit on your second or third trip to Japan. There's Japanese street food, souvenirs and snacks along Yanaka Ginza, a famous cemetery with stray cats, photogenic streets and alleyways, temples and Nezu Shrine - a mini version of Fushimi Inari in Kyoto with all the red tori gates.

Thanks for being so respectful, its honestly so beautiful, you educated us and reminded people about the places of worship and the cemeteries it was lovely!
Thanks, I think it’s important to remember, while you’re enjoying experiencing these places too!
The steps are from the anime movie Your Name, it's really great movie btw. That area of Tokyo would be a dream to photograph. Even while I was watching this I kept seeing all these brilliant little area I'd love to photograph. Thanks for the chill video 😊.
Yes it’s perfect for photography, so many cute and picturesque shops & houses, and just how the streets look! PS the Your Name steps are at Suga Shrine near Shinjuku - love that film!
This area looks really nice 👍 I have see a couple of videos on it but you guys really sold it 😀 the peaceful streets and the temple and torii looks relaxing and nice 👍 🏴🇬🇧
It was the perfect place to explore on our first day! I really liked the shrine ☺️
I'm visiting Japan in October and have been absolutely binging on your videos, especially the Japlanning series. Thanks for showing us around all these cool, niche places that I would otherwise be unaware of. I'll be sure to check Yanesen out to spruce up my instagram a bit! :)
I’m sure you’ll get lots of likes on Insta!! #japanesestreets 😝 I like to share (and visit!) less well known places, because you usually only hear about the most popular places but there’s so much more!
I'm going in October as well and also binging her videos 😂
@@GirlLoveAnime18 It's a great time to go! ALL the cute Halloween stuff!
Quite interesting to see, and I enjoyed watching the several takes of trying to say Nezu shrine :) Thanks again for posting.
That’s what happens when you’re filming out & about! 😝
This looks like a place I would like to visit. Thank you for all the effort you put into making all your wonderful videos.
Thank you - makes it worth it to know you guys enjoy them! :-)
It has been a Marvellous video. Thank you very much Indeed. A
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the Off the Beaten Path video's . I would definitely go there ,Thank You.
Thanks for sharing your trip, Amy. Always grateful to see your adventures and add a few more places to my list for my next trip to Japan😊😊👍🏻❤️🇨🇦🇯🇵
My list is never-ending!! (For real!)
I think it's the stairs from the movie "your name" :)
The Your Name stairs are at Suga Shrine near Shinjuku (love that film!) :-)
There is so much misinformation about those stairs here. They DO NOT appear in the film "Kimi No Na Wa / Your Name". Instead, they appear in the anime film "Yuuyake Dandan", which might not be so famous outside of Japan.
Thanks! I haven't seen that one! The Your Name steps are at Suga Shrine near Shinjuku :-)
I’m back catching up on you’re videos from this new trip. Just been ridiculously busy we had to put CZcams on the back burner for a while. Watched you’re flight with Air France and now catching up , many thanks on these great videos 👍😀
Always fun catching up on videos & podcasts after you’ve been away or missed them for a while!
It looks so lovely and laid back here, definitely want to visit and take lots of photos!
It’s so different from other central Tokyo places like Shibuya etc! A world away!
Awesome
Another place to visit on my July trip
Cheers
Love these
Thanks! Happy to show some less well known places that you don't hear about all the time! :-)
Good vid ya'll.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing! I didn't know YANAKA is the cat's town. I discovered a new Tokyo by you.
Thank you! Glad I could show you something new!
Great job cakes .
Thank yous!!
Thank you so much for showing this place! I'm deffo gonna go there! (cats :D)
What more reason could you need...?! 😝
Hooray! My favorite place in Tokyo! I have never seen a live cat in all of my visits, just the statues.
I didn't see cats in the cemetery either - my friends saw lots when they went though!
Looks like a great place!
So different from the rest of central Tokyo!
My Japanese friend took me to Yanaka on my second trip to Tokyo. Never thought I see it on CZcams. I really enjoy your Japan videos.
Hope you enjoyed it! I try and show places that other channels don.’this - I watch a lot of Japan videos too and lots of them are about the same places!
Cakes with Faces you are spot on about the other you tubers who post about Japan. I enjoy their stuff too but seeing different places is great. I have been to Tokyo 3 times. On our last trip made the effort to go see non tourist spots which was very rewarding. Have you ever watched Kyde and Eric on CZcams?
@@pervykiwi Yes! I love their videos :-) It was so interesting for me seeing their vlogs when they came to the UK too :-) I think on your 2nd/3rd/4th trips it's good to do a mix of your "best of" from previous trips as well as new things. It's the new places that are always the highlight for me.
Loved seeing a neighborhood like this in Tokyo, definitely going on my own "Japlaning" list
It's an interesting contrast to the rest of central Tokyo! :-)
I really enjoyed this upload. I did not know what "Yanasen" was until you explained (I thought it was a train line or something). One of the things I really like your channel is that you do respect Japanese (and other) culture not to film in a cemetery or some places of worship unlike some insensitive gaijin tourists/youtubers who would not bother to care about those things! The stairs at the beginning of this upload - were they in some films or animes? The place looks vaguely familiar?
Ah because "sen" means trainline in Japanese? :-) Makes sense! ("Sen"se!) 😜 The stairs have been in lots of films - I don't know any of them as I don't think they're well known outside Japan. As a lot of people have said in the comments, they look like the stairs in the anime film Your Name, but they're actually at Suga Shrine near Shinjuku.
Thank you! I was wondering about that (the stairs in "Your name")!
@@rarefactioncurve6310 Maybe one day I'll go see them if I'm in the right area! We could recreate the film (I'm sure everyone does that!) 😝
My fiancée and I land in Tokyo on the 31st of May for our honeymoon! We might bump in to you guys!
Ooh how exciting! And what a great honeymoon destination! Have an amazing time!! :-)
Cool, I've been there once before but I didn't really explore it much. I think I'll remedy that next month!
I think it’s a place you can just wander round and find hidden treasures!
This video makes me sad I didn't visit this area. It was on my list but by that day I was so tired ahaha.
Always happens! One for the list for next time!
You could see the Diamond Fuji phenomenon on Fujimizaka Slope (it was the last place in Tokyo you could see this view from street level) close to this area in Nippori years ago but sadly I don't think that's the case anymore as new buildings were going to be put up that would obscure the mountain's view. I can't confirm if this is true or not as I haven't visited the slope for nearly 10 years.
Diamond Fuji would be amazing to see. I've heard of that problem in other areas eg streets that used to have a perfect view of the Tokyo Tower that got blocked by hotels, etc. A problem in a city so densely packed with buildings.
Ikebukuro was like that to me. Where the train station area was busy, but in my search for a second hand store... was very low key. I also went to the sugo shrine from Your Name... Just regular neighborhoods. Beautiful! You two have posted a lot of Japan videos lately... how long was this visit? Seems like you have been there a while, but getting a lot of content is not hard in one of walking around Japan.
GET THAT MAN'S BIKE SO…E WD-40!! lol
Interesting - I’ve only seen the busy central part of Ikebukuro! I’ve heard that if you keep walking away from the main areas in Tokyo you can discover quieter residential streets where people live. That’s something I think would be interesting about staying in an Airbnb or an apartment, and seeing a different, quieter side to the city. These recent videos are now from my trip in February, just less than 2 weeks (never long enough!)
What a lovely video, it was nice to see you exploring a lesser known area, we have the torii gates down on our next visit itinerary, is it far to walk to from Ueno Park do you think? Oh hang on I think I've confused with ANOTHER torii gates shrine, there is one called Hanazono Inari which is actually in Ueno Park!!
I think it is walkable from Ueno actually - you could do a tour of them all! 😝
Cakes with Faces that would be cool 😄
Fushimi inari is one of the shrines in "Memoirs of a geisha", correct???
Yes! It's the one with all the red gates.
This bit of Tokyo looks interesting! Also the hair colour-nice shade to choose :)
it reminds me a little of hatsunes haha.
Edit: Have you picked up much japanese on your travels?
As I was going through a train ticket barrier, one of the attendants said “Hatsune Miku”! 😝 I’ve been teaching myself Japanese, it’s very on and off so I should know much more than I do but I can get by in basic situations (usually I don’t understand people’s replies though!)
Ahh nice. I'm only jut starting to learn a few bits myself haha
@@TechHeadHD2 People will definitely appreciate it, even if you can only say a few words! eg when I say "gochisousamadeshita" to say thanks after a meal, they're often super impressed! :-)
Cat massage: I envision large-breed cats 'making biscuits' on you. Employs Maine Coons, Norwegian Forest Cats and Siberians. Yay!
😸😸😸
A little too far to take my pussycat from the uk for a cat massage 😂😂😂😂. Love your vlog. So much fun and so interesting
If you’re lucky the cat might make it through quarantine at the airport for a quick massage before you have to fly home! 😝
I think those stairs appears in the anime movie "your name" when the protagonists see each other at the end but don't recognize them
I love that part! They’re actually at Suga Shrine near Shinjuku. Such a great film, so emotional!
No its not in the end !!!!
@@mimistak Actually it is....when they look at each other and both says..."Hey...can I ask you... your name?" and BAM!!! Movie title comes out and final credits starts to roll out (if those aren't the stairs...they are pretty much similar :) )
@@cakeswithfaces but it looks so similar...I hadn't been in Shinjuku so next time I'll take a look over there... :)
@@oscarpaiz79 Yes I'd definitely take a look if I was in the area!
..those Hanko are a great souvenir, nice place..really calm..and i think the "stairs" were from a scene in the film/anime "Your Name"..
Wish I’d bought one now! The Your Name stairs are at Suga Shrine near Shinjuku (love that film!!)
@@cakeswithfaces ..yes,you should have bought one, anyway you can go back there..everyone love Your Name.. i mean who wouldn't..:-)
It's so emotional!!
@@cakeswithfaces ..yes,a great anime..
Is there any place in tokyo where i can take picture together with a japanese wearing kimono/yukata ?
It’s unofficial but if you go to a major shrine or temple like Senso-ji in Tokyo, you’ll quite often see people dressed up in kimono - you could try asking politely for a photo with them. There are lots of kimono rental places in Asakusa, and around Kyoto so you can also dress up yourself if you want to!
I’m getting on the plane for Comic-Con now
Really? Where from?

I thought so too, the stairs at the end of the film? But they have a red handrail in the film, I think they are at the Suga Shrine which is in Shinjuku
Yes the Your Name stairs are Suga Shrine! (Love that film!)
