Either Atomos has to add a RAW codec that blackmagic supports, or blackmagic has to add ProRes Raw to Resolve.
The current situation sucks for both of them.

Yep, same problem for me. It is really ridiculous, I think BM wants to instal its BM raw as some standard and Atomos doesn't want to work with BM. BM has also just released its own recorders that can record in BM raw.

@@allencrider The day blackmagic has Nikon autofocus, ergonomics/build, viewfinder and ibis. I can shoot reportage style handheld and the autofocus help me do what I call, the impossible shots. Try manual focusing somebody walking or driving towards you and I am a professional. The autofocus give me the possibility to do shots I would need a whole crew to do, it is not usable or as good in every situation, but for 90% of shoots its a game changer. Thats from someone who use to manual focus before.

A couple things, the noise is 100% normal because it’s the raw data from the sensor. The post denoise is superior to internal denoiser and the results is MUCH cleaner and detailed low light shots. It’s not a con. It’s normal noise when shooting raw.

For action shooters: Have you installed the new 3.0 firmware update? I tested the camera on BIF and the result is simply amazing! I now have a "new" Z6 shooting great action shots. The auto-focusing tracking is simple great! Just as good as the D5 and D500. It is worth every penny.
I now want to buy a CF-express so I can test how many shoots the camera is able to do in one burst on 12FPS. The upgrade really made me happy with Nikon again.

I've done some extensive testing of 10 bit Nlog footage and even with heavy grading it looks smooth and organic without any noticeable artifacts. Dynamic Range is also the same for Nlog and for RAW.

I make and upload long CZcams videos in 1080p. The much smaller ProRes RAW file sizes will give me appealing new options. If I change nothing else, I will dramatically reduce the storage I'm using for my projects. Alternatively, I can record in 4K and downsample to get a bump in image quality while still keeping my file sizes reasonable. FWIW, I had my Z6 updated by Nikon Canada. They added ProRes RAW and cleaned my camera so that it looks new.

Gbit = 2.25 GB/s. A SATA III SSD tops out about 570MB/s, so is it
possible the atomos recorder is a bottleneck, and wouldn't this in theory

Bought the Z6 Filmmakers Kit last February and it’s taken a year to (finally) shoot ProRes RAW... unfortunately, all of my shooting will be to video a play, so getting the sets, and actors and theatre space back together is going to delay the serious work... but I’m going to shoot the narration in my “home” studio and I can’t wait to see what “film shooting” looks like under my Aputure and Intellytech LEDs ‘cause that’s what I’ll be using when I go on set... in addition to having the theatrespace’s tungsten lights available IF that doesn’t introduce - negative - color temperature effects???

I have absolutely no problem pushing the white balance of my GH5s 10bit 422 V-Log-L footage to ridicules places. I have corrected a scene that was shot under almost completely red/deep orange lighting to normal without the footage falling apart. You just really need to know what you’re doing and you’ve got you use DaVinci Resolve. Final Cut doesn’t even compare at all, to how the controls interact with the colors and tones curves. Seriously when you shoot Log and you’re doing anything more than just applying a rec709 LUT, DaVinci will give you noticeable better and cleaner results. My GH5s feels like an 80D with Technicolor CineStyle in Final Cut and like a little VariCam in DaVinci (except for the V-LogL DR ceilings, which just mean you’ve got to know who to expose it right).
To be frank and this has been said by many experienced people, a 10bit 422 Log file with a low enough compression will let you do 85% of what you can do with a raw file, as longs as you expose somewhat correctly. You want to shoot as much as possible at base ISO anyway, even when shooting raw and 10bit 422 Log is enough for pretty much all color grading and even intensive Print-Film-Emulations with which every color and the curve gets changed drastically.
Honestly I don’t get what you’re going at here. A Z6 with a Ninja V and you have to ship it away and then you say it’s for filmmakers to use it in controlled lighting? For what do you need raw then? If you’re that kind of filmmaker you’ll be fine with the original Pocket Cinema Camera or a GH5.

So I’ve been playing with Nikon/Atomos ProRed RAW and I found it impossible to predictably Color Grade... using an xRite Passport Color Checker and Color Finale 2.0 one has the ability to get correct Color by using ACES Profiles for Sony, Cannon, Panasonic... but, of course, nothing for Nikon - not even for legacy Nlog! Undaunted, I chose the “Assuming Log” and tried the Passport Check... again, no good. Can’t get a profile match to baseline.
I did tweak the Passport Checker to get close to my original (high quality LED) lighting but as soon as I applied the Color Finale Effect to the actual video clip... pure garbage, waaay over exposed and looking more like False Colour🤮
Oddly enough, if I just brought in the ProRes RAW as “Video” into Color Finale (not “log” and no ACES profile... it looks pretty good... but WHY shoot log??? I could just shoot Nikon XQD 8 bit and get better results!?! (So long as I took great care in controlling the lighting exposure and color temperature at the shoot!)
It looks like we can’t really use Nikon / Atomos / Pro Res RAW until Apple gets FCPX upgrades, along with 3rd Party tools like Color Finale!
    Am I missing something???

    • @Gynra
      @Gynra Před 4 lety +4

Because they are not as sharp as modern lenses, basically. Anti-aliasing filters work by blurring the image a tiny amount. Most vintage lenses have the same effect.

Gents, always great videos. But the point about pixel binning or line skipping doesn't sound right as that wouldn't really be raw.. I'm guessing that the in-camera is sharper and has NO aliasing bc in compressing it's adding some processing- sharpening and de-aliasing; things you can do in post as well if not better. Thats the only thing that would make sense. How does the image look compared to Sigma FP cDNG?

I was recording everything to Atomos Ninja-V. When I went to review footage I found everything was recorded in ProRes Raw format. My camera hasn't been upgraded and was purchased long before upgrade was offered. Anybody have a clue what is going on. I did confirm the files were ProRes Raw. Maybe from now on I leave camera on still picture mode, plug mic into ninja-v and record movies that way.

    • @tommihommi1

Your eyes don't work like that. Basically your brain does HDR processing all the time, that's why you can see both the inside of your room and what's happening outside, while on camera either one is dark and one is over exposed.
These tree shots are just an easy example shot, not a real usecase.

Still kind of shocking to see raw capture has so much downsides. Why can't we get higher bit depth video capture internally without having to sacrifice oversampling and get that aliasing and false color? Very noticeable in the twinkling reflections imho.
