  • Carl Sandburg was well known as an American writer, poet, biographer, children's author, and song collector. He became known as the Poet of the People, because he expressed the voice of the people who did not have the words or the power to speak for themselves: children, struggling families, working class, immigrants and Americans.
His poetry speaks to the struggles of working class families to achieve the ever elusive American dream, his journalism revealed the struggles of black Americans and immigrants to have the same opportunities as whites and he was honored with an award by the NAACP for his tireless work in being a "prophet" for civil rights, as he helped craft the platform for the NAACP.
His biography of Abraham Lincoln won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of Lincoln's War Years, while The Rootabaga Stories and other children's literature was an important contribution for children of America to identify with "American" things like Trains, and Cities and Farms.
Among his 1000 poems, 30 plus literary works and countless journal and news articles, Sandburg also collected hundreds of uniquely American Folk Songs, and compiled them in a national treasure: "The American Songbag". He spent his last years at Connemara Farms, in Flat Rock, NC and the site is now a unit of the National Park Service.
