lovely. I keep thinking there's much more to explore with those custom modes and they should get detached from Payne content. the fact that most people don't have friendly GUI to pick their own combinations also frustrates me.

Big recommendation if you like playing old titles with insane amounts of fan-made content? Get yourself a copy of the original Unreal Tournament (and find the DX10 renderer for it, so it looks the way it's supposed to - this renderer also works with Unreal, Deus Ex and Rune).
The bots are unrivalled in balance, the levels are excellent, the gameplay is immediately satisfying and fun... and thanks to more than 20 years of fan modding/mapping, my deathmatch map list for it is 600 entries long, and they are of such a high standard, they actually outclass the official maps.
Seriously, if you get UT, and patch it up to version 469 (the unofficial all-in-one patch thing), you have a platform for so many hours of fun it's ridiculous. Plus, it's still an excellent multiplayer title.

Nice! I never heard about this mod, never played Max Payne either, but I'm a big Half-Life/Black Mesa and Portal afficionado and played a lot of HL1 story / total conversion mods back in the day. Timeline series, USS Darkstar, Poke646 (did you know it can change the text color on a C64?), Azure Sheep...

HL had the best mods. At one point it felt like there was an endless supply of great stuff. Action HL, The Specialists, Zombie Panic, The Battlegrounds, The Trenches.. some of them got ported to HL2 engine but I still preferred the original versions better with their heavier Quake flavour. Even just HLDM is a thousand times better than HL2DM.

4:24 - Reminds me of how I got my copies of nearly every GoldSrc game on Steam in 2011: using the serial key that was on my Half-Life: Uplink disc!

i do think it's one of the best half life mods, but not the best mod of all games. i would put a warioware inspired doom total conversion there. but it's my personal thing, so, yeah.
