And this whole time growing up I saw Rowley as a total idiot.
Now I just feel bummed out.
Midnite St0rm me too
he's still a total idiot just more of a sad total idiot
Midnite St0rm I mean, he must be if he doesn't see what Greg is doing to him xD
Because that’s how Greg pAINTED him to be. He thinks Rowley is a total moron who will do as he says meanwhile Rowley thinks he’s being a good friend
Oh no he definitely is
It all flows downstream. Rodrick bullied Greg and now Greg subconsciously bullied Rowly because it’s someone who is weak or oblivious enough to take it in order to cope with his own abuse. Just a thought.
Yup
Nah
Older brothers always do that
Rowley😉
He basically confirms in the first book that he wanted to do this to Manny because of Rodrick’s bullying. So Greg getting bullied actually is pretty central to how he handles his friendships.

Jeff Kinney: No guys, his mom is the villian, she is like a karen remember?
Everyone: *n o*
Did he actually say that?
@@ARCADEGHOST No, but as someone who's read all the books that's obviously what he's implying
@@Turbs94945 I'd say Susan is closer to a Smother Mother moreso than a Karen stereotype. Like I see more in common between her and Agnes Skinner in mannerisms than I do her and a Karen. A Karen wouldn't care for their child if they don't "improve" her image, while it's clear that Susan cares about Greg, she just does it in a very overbearing way.
Susan is a good mom that cares for manny but loves greg and rodrick if your talking about the long haul movie I agree
I mean she's a pretty terrible mother, but then again almost their entire family is dysfunctional. Rodrick is the only normal person, and he's the only one who realizes how fucked up his family is.
After reading it I realize that Rowley just wants Greg to like him for how he is
It’s quite sad.
Emily Sica in the books you can see that Greg cares about Rowley to some extent. They do have some good times together and Greg does stand up for him multiple times

As somebody who was extremely naive as a child and basically survived off of trying to please everyone, this hits so close to home, especially when Rowley tried to show Greg his superhero and laughed and said it needed to be "edgier." I like writing and drawing, but my siblings always respond with indifference and think that's good enough because they're not yelling, and two of my siblings are especially rude to me about what I love.
do what you love, you don’t need them to like what you like for you to have fun
I remember in the most recent book "Wrecking Ball" I noticed in the end [SPOILERS AHEAD]

@Doawkfan actually, he said pollen went into his eyes.
I didn’t like Greg on rowley diaries such a boss he wants to control rowley

@PARKIN LAI Yeah, its confirmed that he didn't move because the people who wanted to move in backed out
That doesn’t mean he cared at all. There are many reasons to miss someone that don’t require actually caring about them.

I don't think a entire book dedicated to him would be worth it maybe like a chapter in one of the books
I would read that
Yeah, Greg has done some majorly questionable stuff. But honestly, it's hard to be all that mad at him since most of the people around him are even worse. Take, for example, the part of the first book when Greg was the cartoonist for the school paper. Mr. Ira changed all the dialogue to a mockery of everything Creighton the Cretin stood for. But when Greg refused to let himself be used like that, Mr. Ira switched to running Zoo Wee Mama, completely unaltered. And there was no explanation given for why Rowley's comic was unscathed. It may have been that Greg was just "conveniently" leaving the reason out, but I'm pretty sure that if was that Mr. Ira had learned his lesson, Greg would have at least mentioned an attempt to make amends (possibly interpreting it as insincere and declining). But no, it seems this teacher was just being selective of whose art he disrespects.
I think that Greg’s behavior is also affected by the bullying he’s been subjected by at the hands of his older brother. While I don’t condone Greg’s behavior, it would only be fair to add Roderick’s influence to this analysis.
It wasn't just Rodrick, it's implied their dad beats Greg. Greg takes it out on Rowley.

Y'all, you can't be forgetting about how Greg's family isn't so great either. His older brother tortures him while his younger brother bosses him around. His dad constantly feels embarrassed of Greg. Even the PIG pushes Greg around. The only one who actually really cares about Greg is Helen, but she's usually busy dealing with everyone else's shenanigans. Sure, dude's seriously got some work to do, but he has a heart. Maybe if his family was more supportive of him, he'd have learned how to really treat his friends. In the end, Rowley is Greg's only friend. Dude is probably such a narcissistic jerk because no one had really ever shown him true affection except for Rowley. In conclusion, I have hope for Greg. Who knows? He could really change, and it'd be great to see him turn over a new leaf. I believe in second chances, don't you?

Manny is such an evil little toddler. He literally shut off all the power, took all the food and heat sources, and watched as his family suffered. I think the part where he broke down and started to whine about how no one taught him how to tie his shoes was just an excuse, but I could be wrong considering that he’s only a toddler. I think all Rodrick and Greg need are a few good morals, but Manny deserves to be kicked out of the family.
@@redacted9146 His not just an evil toddler, His a fucking psychopath.
Hmm well the books and movie are in Greg's perspective. What if Greg was just manipulating the reader into thinking his friends and family are terrible people? I mean Manny is three and managed to turn off a circuit breaker. One, a three year old shouldn't know what a circuit breaker is, let alone how to use it. Second, in the books Manny is shown to be a master manipulater, I'm not sure a three year old would figure how to manipulate his parents.

I don’t think Greg is a sociopath. He feels empathy for others and he has done some good things. We gotta remember he’s in middle school. Regardless how you wanna spin, Greg looks up to Rodrick (who bullies Greg) and Greg bullies Rowley (who looks up to him). Greg’s parents let Rodrick bully Greg and when he is punished it’s usually a slap on the wrist while Manny gets all the praise and attention. Greg acts this way because he’s bullied by someone he looks up to and he knows Rowley looks up to him in a way so he does the same.

What would make for a GREAT series is if Greg is the villain of his own story (in the words of another commenter "Elongated man Forever). But it would be even better if he becomes less of a sociopath throughout the series, instead of the entire series being about a flat arced mindless book about a middle school sociopath. (edit below).
Edit:
If Kinney followed Rowley's POV series, he should make his arc be about either claiming "independence" from Greg or finally having Greg accept him for who he is. If done right, that would be a happy-cry resolution to the dark undertone of this book series. Kinney not only developed this book for 12 year olds like me, but also deep messages for adults. This makes soo much sense!
Wow… all this went completely over my head.
I don’t think ill ever look at this series the same again.
I was kinda already thinking that Greg was a bit crazy, Because in the do-it Yourself book (which I bought) There was a snippet of Rowley’s diary, and it showed his perspective, it was pretty sad, And I’m glad this subject is so popular now
I have this book too
@@artpolihronaki7292 yes
I’m pretty sure in the snippet, Rowley knows how inept his family is, but chooses to be an idiot so Greg doesn’t have to deal with the stress he already has
There was the “I ate the cheese” line. Give Greg that one.
The only reason he does those things is to keep Rowley under the illusion that he cares about him.
This is true but Greg isn't that smart also as I said he still want Rowley to do his bidding
@@thegreatandpowerfuldc5977 I guess your right however I still do think there was an actual reason for him to take the fall maybe he does like Rowley a little bit or maybe the theory itself is grasping at straws yet its also not. Its strange
@@thegreatandpowerfuldc5977 In the mind of narcissists and sociopaths, some things are worth doing if they can keep the intended victim(s) under their illusion for longer.
well to remind y’all, that was a one time thing. Also I agree with Jane, Sociopaths commonly do this tactic to fool their victims, so if anything it expands the theory.
If you think about it Roderick is the only normal one
completely unrelated to the topic of the video but i love that you used Night in the Woods music for bgm near the end
I don't think Greg is a sociopath, that's a pretty big accusation and it feels like claiming he has that condition sort of simplifies things.
Nah, i think Greg is an egocentric and kind of abusive jerk who does care deeply about others, but puts himself first and tends to take advantage of those who he deems "below him".
Matt I. That’s what a sociopath would say *cough cough*
@@betambalu9785
True, but it's more of an insult to say he's not a sociopath, because it's entirely his fault.
You had us in the first half, not gonna lie
Matt I. i don’t know if i believe he’s a sociopath, but it’s certainly an interesting theory.
It isn’t that deep, it’s diary of a wimpy kid lol. The book is made for 7 year olds
>be Greg
>write a journal because why not
>publish it
>bestseller for quite some time
>nice
>write 12 more books and publish them
>get branded a sociopath by readers
>mfw
You.missed some:
>kid finds out greg is a sociopath
>tells everyone
>people are sent to assassinate him
>Its a success
>rip toxic sociopath
Here's the last piece
>And nothing of value was lost.
There's one more step
Profit from publishing the story about the sociopath and get a movie directed by Michael bay
Why are you making greentexts on yt
Oh I subscribed today I love it 👍👍👍
i relate on such a deep level with greg , i sooooooooooo take advantage of my friends and only see them as support characters for a big story where i am the main character and its great cuz when ur born a sociopath you are ether exploting eveything around you without anything in return or your just not living right
is this satire? you do realise the term sociopath refers to something that you arent born with but something you develop from experiences right? being 'born' a sociopath is called being a psychopath
@@upisntdownsilly well then psychopath it is
Whoah. This video gave me thicc nostalgia from reading all these books as a kid.....might actually pull a few down from the bookcase, just to see how many things my child brain kind of glanced over...
Same...

Frames Of Screen I think we need a ZOO WEE MAMA in the chat for rowley.
Sorry heffley but you zoo wee’d your last mama
I personally think Greg's actions are a mix of teenager and his upbringing. He was bullied all his life, and he wants a vessel to take out all that pent up anger he must feel after being bullied for so long by Rodrick and not being able to do anything about it. That's kind of how I turned out.
True that
