This is the reason I prefer a poncho to a tarp! Love the versatility!

John you are exactly right! Empire is my favorite and it made a huge impact on me as a child.
Also with the Alpha tent, you can stake the four corners and tie paracord to the hoodie and toss over a branch and give it some tension. Great video, Thanks for sharing.

Best poncho setup vid that i have seen. I would not have thaught about making the alpha setup had i not have seen this. Excellent. I also love the snow camoflage clothing you were wearing especially at the end where you walk from right to left in the back ground.

Great info! Now I see how useful a snow pattern poncho is for concealment, too. Thanks for the tip about sewing corners on your poncho... Will be doing that!

My wife has agreed to sew the pockets on the corners so I have ordered 3 different pattern ponchos, one with the snow and stick pattern. I was greatly impressed by the 2 stick set up, for both concealment and lean to use. In our southern forests, it is easy to find flexible straight saplings to set up that way.

That A frame would be even better with a Military Modular Sleep System (MMSS). Put your backpack or rucksack at your feet, to block off some wind. I keep my MMSS in my vehicle with my Large Alice Ruck.

Like your videos ! Been thinking of trying tarp camping because as I have aged my 6 lb. tent is getting heavier with every season.Tarps are much lighter and no poles to backpack in to the sites.So thanks for the set ups that you have shown .

I like the video sir, basic and straight to the point, one night set ups is what I'm looking for, I I just got a couple military ponchos, I like the idea of a space blanket for winter and summer use, good tip, and the camp dry spray sounds like something I should look into, I did not know there was an upkeep to a poncho...gotta look into that I guess...

UglyTent Bushcraft & Survival lol just has an eerie feel to it that puts you on edge. Not saying it’s bad, just different from other channels I’ve watched. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Really cool different types of shelters! That alpha shelter was new. I like using a bow line with a bite and a toggle. Than a trucker's hitch with a quick release on the other end for my ridgelines. But your shelters were solid! I'd love to see you snap two ponchos together with an emergency blanket or two??? I usually carry my litefighter one man Multicam military surplus tent. Especially if I know I'm going to be out overnight! But if I was going to have to make an open shelter. I would want to make it as comfortable as possible! More videos using several ponchos and emergency blankets please?? Different size space blankets-emergency blankets would be awesome!!🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸

Alpha tent & A frame works best with space blankets. Before you push down your poles on the Alpha lay space blanket down between poles and poncho..tape up any loose space blanket same with A frame. Couple of hot pockets heat pads on your core will greatly increase your comfort. Small 8 hour candles inside Alpha tent warms up considerably.

I have a large 9'4"" × 11'4" tarp so I am interested in this video. Some times I get creative, but want to see what you got.
I also carry 2 ponchos for their practically, light weight, and versatility.

Thanks for the compliment! I usually carry at least 50 feet of cordage minimum. I like the jute twine the best because you don’t have to worry about the perfect knot. Tie it, cut it and go. I carry paracord as my second cordage, as the saying goes “ two is one and one is none”.
great video man you and Wilderness Innovation has like the best poncho shelter videos ever. I wish I would try one out but I can't cause I live in the urban area and I would not pitch my shelter in the middle of the street saying that I'm completely camouflaged . I want to practice my survival skills but sadly my brother is going to survival camp next week and irs really not fair to me. But thanks for the video though.

My dad always taught me to use bungie cords instead of 550 chord just because it’s faster to set up and take down in a hurry. Extra weight but the convenience is well worth it

How does one obtain small poncho tents like shown on these videos?
+Michael LeBlanc this is the one I had in the military. But you can find them at most Army surplus stores or websites. Check MidwayUSA.com.
Seems like they would be too small for heavy or continuous rain.

Yes, they make backpacking ponchos that are bigger, however I think it might be the same size as the military ones.

FYI the Mylar surface is not as tough as the plastic material and wears off easier. So no matter the season keep it up. They may be better the nor modern ones, but probable not as they have not changed much, I have had the Mylar flake off before.

I don't have a poncho but I think I'm going to get one for my emergency pack in the boot of my car, so this is just an observation, but it looks to me like you can connect these things together to make a more substantial shelter, just an idea.

Why does the reflective side go down during summer?
Any idea where I can get one of these military ponchos for cheap? I tried my local surplus but they charge an arm and a leg for everything I've checked out in the past

I was able to pick up 4 brand new Swiss army ponchos for under $20...they are different from the U.S. ones in that they have no grommets ,but have snaps. They're not entirely square. ... Have you seen those, have any tricks for those ?

Don't know if anyone said this already, but I keep a set of prusiks with my ridgeline so I don't have to keep loosening and tightening my ridgeline.
I’ve mentioned it in my other videos, but yes that is a great suggestion.
If you had the upper attachment point against a tree instead of in between two trees you would also get the benefit of the tree shielding you from wind.

I thought that too, plus you can tie the hood to your ridge line saving you having to run what looked like a massive amount of cord to another tree, a definite hazard in the dark lol

The first two : how did you tie the poncho to the ridge line. I’m a beginner at this so bear with me.?
You can just poke the ridgeline through the grommet in a loop, then put a stick in the loop. Real simple and once you pull the loop back through the tightness keeps the stick in place.

I really didn't realize how much dexterity you lose and how fast until I went camping in Montana in the mountains in the cold. It's really weird how your body reacts to cold.

It was issued to me in the Air Force. You can occasionally still find them at the surplus stores.

You can pay top dollar for the cream of the crop, but I think the military surplus ponchos are some of the best choices, yes.

for US poncho, tie ridgeline at belt height, lay poncho OVER ridge line and tie 2 OPPOSITE corners TO ridge line with Prussik or similar knots.. pull two loose corners down and skake them (one should point down in direction wind is coming from) Dad taught me that one from his time in WW2 and Korea
