    You can also use the cinch string in the hood to close off the hood. Even if the waterproof backing starts to peel off they make great shelters. However, virtually useless as a poncho after that. I had 3 ponchos when I was in the military. One was used for my hooch. The others I used with two poncho liners and made a makeshift sleeping bag. Much lighter and compact than my issued sleeping bag. When properly dressed for freezing temps can be used for sleeping in freezing weather.

    Nice video man. Hey, FWIW, when you buy wire-nuts for this project, buy the green ones. They're made for connecting electrical ground-wires and because of that they come with a hole already drilled in them. Will make the project a little easier/safer.

  • @blackboardbloke
    @blackboardbloke Před 3 lety +2

    I'm in the UK, and if there's any non USA viewers watching this who can't get wire nuts in their country, I came up with an alternative way of fixing to the corner grommets using short lengths of pole taken from the off cuts from the cut to size poles for the poncho (4 are required).
    It also requires 4 tubes taken off the end of spare poles or tube of similar internal diameter. These need to be expoxy resin fitted on the tubeless ends of the Alpha's poles. Next the 4 short lengths cut have a hole down the centres where the shock cord was. This is a similar diameter to coat hanger wire. Cut short lengths of that and bend them as a blend of an S and a Z shape and epoxy one straight edge into a cut off. Repeat, then epoxy resin them into all four female pole ends.
    Now the pole ends can be simply hooked into the corner grommets. The corners are still flat, and because the wire is a much smaller diameter than the grommets, stakes will pass through as well. I Stake down corners on a short side so I can hinge the opposite side up and prop it up with my trekking pole or a long stick for sitting under, having drinks, meals, reading etc until sleep time.

    I saw this and thought. If you take a 10X13 tarp, anchor it at the 6 1/2 foot point on the two long ends and fold it over. On the upper half do the same as you do in the video, you would have a larger tent plus a floor.

  • @05generic

    It would be cool if someone made a child's inflatable splash pool that was just the right size for that shelter. You could use it as a tub floor which could be an asset if you were camped on very flat ground during a downpour. That's why most tents have that kind of floor. But I know the whole idea here is to have a light wt and small package. I don't know how much a splash pool weighs or how big it is folded.

      Thats a great idea. I already picked up the UST reflective blanket because its thin and rolls up into this but I get those sun shades all the time from businesses around here giving them away for promotion so now I have a use for them!

    Nicely done, you have a good tempo and keep it lively. Nice use of those caps and I actually like it neatly folded and wrapped. I've just come to learn about this type of tent and wanted to know how to set it up. Would be great to teach to people new to camping or survival and would be great for a small kit or emergency use.

    Genius. I'd been using that US GI poncho as my shelter in the army for over 10 years and that never occurred to me. Granted, the poles would be too bulky, long and heavy for light infantry use, still, great idea. If I hadn't just retired I'd pursue lighter poles that have shorter sections so pole bundle would only be around 10 - 12 ins long. The simplest method is where I keep a length of para cord (green, not blaze orange for mil use) attached to each end (middle grommet). When it's time to go to ground, tie the cords to 2 trees and stake out the corners and mid grommets with short, thin, light bungees. Works fine, but, still that criss-cross pole idea...

    • @Iridium242
      @Iridium242  Před 5 lety

      Yeah I am working on shorter poles, there is a place (I have to find it again) that makes aluminum poles in any length you want and also sells the shock cord. This will be more of a long term project on the channel, I am working on a sleep system for it as well so the whole shelter and sleep system will fit into a small stuff sack. Thanks!

  • @mountainghost556
    @mountainghost556 Před 5 lety +2

    That is a good idea. I would throw in a ridge line just to keep versatility. You know where I live sometimes there is no place to run a line so this would be great. It also give me a good Idea as quick hide or servalance setup using a few extra Items.

    • @Iridium242

    I was thinking you can also do a similar one with a tarp. Saving your poncho to keep you dry in rainy weather

    • @blackboardbloke
      @blackboardbloke Před 3 lety

      You can, but the bigger the tarp the more, flexible, and potentially unstable it will become. You might need to get thicker diameter poles. It's a try it and see if it works job.
      I haven't got the measurement of the diagonal of the poncho (look it up on Alpha Rubicon), the poles are 111" so you work out how many times longer than the poncho diagonal. Then just multiply the diagonal measurement of your tarp by the same factor to get the pole length to make the dome.

    great I just had my fiberglass poles replaced off my miltec tent. I can use the old pole. to fit to a miltec ponch I have using this meathod. I have the gatewood cape but the poncho might be preferable to that in this format as a poncho can be used also as a ground cloth. a Basha or a lean to.

    • @Iridium242
      @Iridium242  Před 4 lety

      Thanks, You have to be careful on Amazon as there are many knock offs that are a different size, best bet with a project like this is to get a surplus one from a military surplus store that sells the real stuff. I will have to get the specs for this poncho and post them in the comments, thanks for watching!
