Science Centre Cancels Talk About Sex and Gender & Char Siew For Cantonese Insult |

  • Earlier this week, Science Centre Singapore cancelled a ticketed event organised to discuss the differences between sex and gender, after an outcry from some members of the public. Could Science Centre have done anything differently to make this event palatable? Elsewhere, a Crystal Jade promo where diners could get free char siew for reciting a Cantonese insult drew flak for being “demeaning” to children. Is this another case of the “wokeness movement” making life very burdensome?

    The charsiew phrase is common in Malaysia, I think. I've mostly heard it from my Penang friends.
    It's not really offensive to me, just kind of cringe.

    After watching the CNA Walk The Line Docuseries, I really admire the resourcefulness and resilience of those who choose to take this path. And it made all the problems I am facing in life seem so minute in comparison.

    In the age of A.I, many are waiting for permission to think. That's why we can compete with the world in the age of A.I

    tbh i think Terrence's analogy is fair, why do marriages have the component that asks the audience if there is any reason that the couple should not marry, we are wanting to seek the truth, if anyone of the two has been cheating, then its fair that the other should know and make a decision. Analogies being analogies they never fully represent the reality anyway.
    I think its absolutely fair for a medical practitioner and others to be invited to a panel,I would say in some way, the organisers first cancelled the alternate view, so being warriors against cancel culture, i wonder why the boys say much about that? i would rebut Haresh that said society and culture is different from chromosones and biological sex, i mean why would people seek to do gender transition surgeries and compete in a different category of sex if it were not the case? Very easy to be inclusive and diverse and pushing an ideology when you dont bear the consequence.

    Actually I think that was a great analogy from Terence

    Very tired of the conservatives weaponising techniques which the more 'liberal' voices can't use as effectively. Conservatives are not afraid of criticism and backlash the same way 'woke' people are: there is a power differential here, as the state/gov prefers to be conservative too (pandering to the conservatives). The lowest denominator will always be there. Raising the average is such a snail's pace.

    Leave it to Crystal jade to give char siew a bad name. I hate it when innocent delicious food is caught in the cross hairs of bad marketing campaign 😡

    Terence should have dropped Coke instead of coffee. Even if it is the Zero calorie type. Artifical sweeteners are worse than sugar for health.

    The char siew promotion is indeed distasteful, there are definitely kids who have been traumatised by such phrases when they were young. Having such marketing will normalise use of such phrases.
    The marketing can probably be better by twisting the phrase so that it celebrates having the child while at the same time frowning upon the original phrase.

    Also, you guys are wrong. An age limit on the charsiew campaign will not stop Singaporeans from complaining.
    This is Singapore. We'll find something to complain about. This is who we are.

    It is all about tonality, You guys use the F word a lot too, but the tone used made the difference. It is a common expression in Cantonese. Sometimes it could be done in a joking manner. I don't think it parents will do that to young children, more towards adult who are giving the father a treat. Also if I am the parent of a young child, I will point to the char siew and tell him or her, there is a Cantonese saying and what it meant. Take it as an opportunity to teach them. IMHO, the cause of the interpretation is the lack of usage of dialects nowadays. People are not even using their mother tongue that much.

    I am a Cantonese, this phrase is very common in the past when I was a child. But please, this phrase is no longer "acceptable" in today's world lah. How can you say that the Char Siew is better than your kid?????

    Very sad to see YLB is deleting comments that perhaps offended their sensibilities. Also the dislikes are manipulated. If you cannot accept fair criticisms then don't bother allowing comments in future. Unsubbed.

    You miss the point. The Science Center is supposed to be about hard science, discussing a social construct topic with a clearly one-sided panel is not a discussion, it is propaganda. What business does Science Center have doing social propaganda? That is why the backlash occurred. You are totally missing the point by linking this to cancel culture, the Science Center is not just any ordinary group, it is supposed to be an institution of factual learning.

    • @lagofala
      @lagofala Před měsícem +4

      Is science center supposed to be for hard science? Their "about us" page on their website never write leh. Anyway Social science also science what. Just go and discuss and debate if you really feel so strongly about it lor.
      As Terrence mentioned, it's a ticketed event and for 18up. The impact of this event is but a drop in the ocean vs what kids can read on the internet anyway.
      Also come on la, let science center venue sales team earn some money can or not.

    • @LonganLee

      What is propanganda is subjective. Anti-propaganda is in itself a form of propaganda you are doing

    • @LonganLee
      @LonganLee Před měsícem +5

      Everything under the sun has science as it's foundation except religion (though there is still behavioral and psychological science involved). You have very narrow understanding of science. Are you a fanatic from a certain strict religion? Btw, science center can let it's premise be rented out for discussions of any topic from a event hosting place and rental income perspective. So everything you alleged is debunked

    you also same what, criticize people for calling out crystal jade but then question if science center should really be hosting events like that. End of the day youre just a slave to your biases and values choosing to believe what you want to think is true
