Requiem - a piece of music composed to honor a dead person.

      So...she's dead?

    • @Erblorg
      @Erblorg Před měsícem +7

@@RightManWrongPlace Technically - yes and no but it's complicated. She's definitely not coming back. After she died in the story mode, we learn in Happy Chaos' arcade mode that she's basically trapped now in some kind of purgatory, paradox dimension type of thing and she can come back at any moment but chooses not to because it would bring more trouble to everyone than good and she's ok with it.

With I-no most of the theme is about her acesion to god hood which someone else commented about. She became so powerful but in the end nothing changed. She felt suffocated by that. Also the april cried and bring a cute scarf sections are followed by "I can't tell what time tells me" and "my mind tells me many memories but I know it isn't real."(paraphrasing) it is essentially talking about how she has lived for so long time no longer matters and the few memories she originally had she can no longer connect to.

I think the lyrics are more likely meant to be taken far more literally, in how the games imply she has lived potentially millions of years resetting history to desperately attempt to change the bleak future she has seen ("we're falling down slowly" and whatnot). I don't think the issue isn't even a difficulty to connect to her memories, I think it's that she genuinely couldnt tell you if those memories are real history anymore. You can also kinda get that from the structure of those lines, being very "if x then y", as if she is recalling literally what actions are taken to get to certain outcomes, and links really nicely into the chorus right after that gets back into the nihilism and hopelessness after seeing nothing actually changed

a song about her powerlessness to do the thing she was literally made to do, and concluding with what is essentially full ego death and a desperate final hail mary to do something with her power. A requiem for (the manifestation of) mankind's hope. imo best ggst song

Without going too deep or spoiler territory (although that last part is unfortunately hard to avoid), I-no's theme is basically about her ascension to God-hood. "There is no up or down above the clouds and I can't breathe" is following up the line "I flew high so I could see everything". It's less about *Space* and more about her obtaining power and still feeling empty or lost, but that's just giving a bare synopsis of it and everyone can interpret that lyric differently. Plus I'm doing my best to keep out things given the events that unfold in the story. But I-No's theme is basically her feelings at the end of the story for Guilty Gear: Strive.
Requiem is also the only theme of the entire character theme OST to not feature the name of the song in the lyrics.

Few theme's in Strive is straightforward with the storytelling, there's a lot of metaphors in the lyrics and a few of then probably got lost in translation.
I'm half japanese and for me "above the clouds" has others meanings because it's something that is said a lot in asian literature in general, its usually is a place out of reach for mortals and can be alluding divinity or the imperial court.
I think I-No's theme gets easier to understand if you make some parallels with the myth of Icarus, who got way too confident (he was "on a roll" just like the lyrics) and flew near the sun with wings made of feathers and wax, which melted, he fell to the sea and drowned, while seeing his feathers falling like snowflakes.
Icarus is also the name of a song in Guilty Gear Sign so it's somewhat of a recurring theme, my comment also doubles as recommendation in case you end up going back to older games to react.

TL:DR [Spoiler if you expand the comment]
Her memories are fake; she detaches from those memories to seek omniscient power *"pictures in my head tell me a lot of stories, none of it is real, Cut It Out, I flew-so I could see everything"*
Her new power is suffocating; it detaches her from reality yet she's still trapped by fate *"There's no up or down above the clouds, I can't breath, falling down... pulled by gravity"*
She knew her plans would probably fail yet hopes her attempts will lead to a better future *"If I'm swallowed by fate I must have fought well, praying it will becomes the seed of-new life".*
What is her goal? She saw all timelines lead to the extinction. To prevent it, she gains power to make humanity omniscient. Failing to realize we aren't human if we have no pain/endings.

    "I-no" is read as "Ee-no", jsyk ^^
Funnily enough, when I-no debuted in the series, her one of her character gimmicks actually was that no one really knew who she was or where she came from- not knowing her lore is part of the lore!
Actually explaining her story would go into some notable spoilers, so if you mind that, avoid the rest of this comment!
So, like I said, when I-no first showed up, we knew pretty much nothing about her, other than the fact that she was seemingly ageless and had the ability to travel through time, and has been using that power to just seeks thrills and fun by any means necessary (often by doing cruel things to people). She was working for the series most prominent antagonist, but was also not particularly loyal to him.
Eventually we learn that I-no, through her time travelling, has discovered that at a certain point in the future, all timelines she could reach converge into the same boring conclusion that she couldn't alter, and she's since then been trying to alter said ending, but to no avail.
Adding to that, we also learn how I-no got her powers- and we learn this alongside her, cause her memories of this have been taken from her.
I-no was once a regular woman from a timeline that existed previously, during which humanity was brought to the brink of destruction. But the collective desire of all humans to not die because so powerful, it materialized as an actual force, which was all sealed within the woman who would become I-no.
This power was too dangerous for just one person to wield, so a man who would later become Happy Chaos (remember him?) took half of I-no's powers away from her, and seemingly giving her the name "I-no."
Even with half of that power I-no could travel through time though, and by doing so she ended up erasing the world that she originally came from by travelling back in time and altering the past. (it's unclear if that's something she did by accident or not.)
As a result, on top of everything, I-no became a being "without a past", and her memories of her human life became fuzzy cause they *technically* never happened.
In Guilty Gear Strive, after recalling more of her past, realizing that she herself is "the world" (both as the creator of this timeline, and as an amalgamation of all of her worlds humanity) I-no decides to unleash Happy Chaos and have him help her take back the lost half of her powers, so she can become God, hoping to find fulfillment this way, at last.
Over the course of the game, she ends up talking about details of her past she can only kind of recall now, mainly having had a lover who disappeared one day, and trying everything to find him, but never being able to. But even then, as her world now "never happened" she can't even feel certain about how true any of those memories are.
Her theme here is essentially about a lot of the stuff I mentioned above- I-no seeking fulfilment in the face of eternal existence, being unable to "feel" reality as she experiences it, how approaching the divine will also erode that which is human, and the contrast between the mundane and the inconcievable- both of which are part of who and what she is.
    I guess :^Ic

I really do enjoy your analysis/reaction over the Guilty Gear music, it's quite relaxing to watch. Something that isn't as relaxing would be Baiken's theme. But we wouldn't want that, do we? Nuh uh, nope, not on my watch /s

I think Guilty gear persists because Daisuke takes the time to keep it going, an there are enough people who enjoy whats created to make it slightly worth while for other parties involved. I know for a long time, Strive took a heavy back burner because other projects like fighterZ were on the forefront. But I think the extra time cooking was worth it

I mean, your interpretation is your own, but man you think wayyyyy too literally about the lyrics. A lot of the metaphorical stuff you're taking as literal and a lot of the literal things (pick out a cute scarf, going to see fireworks) you've dismissed as random.
