0:13 Reader Beware The information in this video has been derived from various sources believed to be reliable and accurate. It is provided in good faith. However, the author has not verified all of the information and cannot guarantee its completeness or accuracy.
0:45 Following her injury on 3 July 1980, two weeks before the opening of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Elena Mukhina did not give up for a minute. Below are a few things about her that you may be interested:
    0:54 1. Awards
The Soviet Union awarded Mukhina the Order of the Badge of Honor in 1980 and the Order of Lenin in 1983 in response to her injury. In 1982, Juan Antonio Samaranch, the IOC President, awarded her the Silver Medal of the Olympic Order. On the occasion of her 40th birthday in 2000, Russian President Vladimir Putin honored Mukhina with his proclamation that "in life, you are a champion - our pride and glory." After her death in 2006, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of International Gymnastics in 2021.
    1:28 2. Study
Mukhina was a student of the Physical Culture Institute in Moscow before her injury. She wanted to be a coach after graduation. After her injury, teachers came to her, gave lectures, and took exams. She managed to graduate from the Institute in 1984.
    1:44 3. Interviews
Mukhina rarely communicated with journalists after her injury. Here are a few examples. Interviews titled “A Courageous Lesson from Elena Moukhina” and “Yelena Mukhina: Grown-up Games” were published in the magazine “Moscow News” in 1987 and in Ogonyok magazine in 1988 respectively. She talked about her injury in an A&E documentary "More Than a Game" in 1991. Also, her interview titled “Triumph of the Spirit” was recorded in 1996 and broadcasted on TV two years later in 1998.
    3:27 4. Career
Following the interview titled “A Courageous Lesson from Elena Moukhina” conducted in 1987, Mukhina was invited to work as a guest columnist for the magazine “Moscow News” in late 1980s. Also, as she studied psychology and parapsychology, she herself managed to help people who fell into an emotional pit.
    3:43 5. Daily Life
Mukhina was operated on many times. Many people helped her. She was daily cared for by her grandmother, Anna Ivanovna. Several years later after her injury, she could sit in an armchair, hold a spoon, write a little. She took a keen interest in children and young gymnasts both before and after injury. She was presented with a satellite dish and got a sports channel. She did not miss a single championship, and then after watching she loved to discuss what she saw. Besides, she expressed a deep religious faith, and was fond of horses and animated cartoons.
Since 2000, Mukhina had always been close to Elena Gurina, who was a training partner with Mukhina and Olga Koval in the old days. For the last six years, Gurina had been living and taking care of her until the end.
    4:52 6. Death
In 2005, Mukhina was traumatized by the death of her 92-year-old grandmother. One year later, Mukhina died in the arms of Gurina on 22 December 2006. The biggest Russion sports newspaper “Sovietskij SPORT” dedicated her the cover at Sunday's Christmas edition. The funeral service in her honor was held at CSKA on 27 December 2006. She was buried in Moscow at the Troekurovsky cemetery.
5:45 7. Elena Mukhina National Prize
The prize was established in March 2007, a few months after Mukhina’s death, by the Russian Paralympic Committee on the initiative of Moscow's Paralympic Committee. It would be awarded to the most outstanding disabled persons of sports, culture, arts and science. END

Thank you, most importantly she should be remembered as an abuse survivor. When you have a paralytic injury, and are in immense pain lying on the floor, and your first thought is “Thank God, I don’t have to go to the Olympics in 2 weeks.”, you have been so beaten down, perceived as so valueless, and having no rights, no life, it is heartbreaking. Through her interviews, she gained her voice, was finally allowed to “exist” beyond her production value. A gentle kind soul, once orphaned at the age of 5, to the voice of the millions of female athletes around the world, you Elena are not forgotten. ❤

She actually thought "Thank god I don´t have to go to the olympics" when she wake up at the hospital, not when she was lying on the floor. She said it in a written interview posted by the same person that posted this video, I read it there. Of course at that moment she didn´t know she was paralyzed forever. She said she wanted to rest and read a book, and she could achieve it, but at what price. It was emotional.

I just found out about Elena Mukhina last week. I'm not into gymnastics, but due to the recent Olympic games, her story came up as a suggested video.
Ever since, I've been watching many of her videos during competition and after her injury, and what is the most heartbreaking for me is, how almost everyone went on with their lives, and left Elena on her own. I've read that her grandmother took care of her, but let's be real, the old lady couldn't take care of Elena the way she needed to, since she needed care, just like a newborn baby. She could only sit, if someone helped her to that position. In one of her interviews, when asked how she was doing (this interview was about 7 or 8 years after the injury), she said that it had been painful and with many issues, obviously. She said that the ones she considered her friends, left her, but that she had new friends that helped her. She only mentioned one gymnast that considered a real friend, the one that won the all around in the 1980's Olympics. Then later, after her grandmother died, another former gymnast took care of Elena.
She needed professional help 24/7. That should've been provided by the government. That's the least they needed to do for her. She was hurt, trying to bring honor to the nation. Even after her injury, she could've lived a more decent life, if her so-called friends had stuck around and taken turns to help her. I don't think her grandmother was that lovely either, because in one of her interviews she said that she didn't have anyone to turn to for help. Even if you're raised without parents, if you have someone that really took care of you and showed you love, in this case, the grandmother, you don't go around looking depressed all the time, and saying that you haven't experienced love in this life.
It breaks my heart that those who were Elena's teammates, have lived a comfortable life, have kids, etc. Their sacrifices during their youth paid off. But for Elena, everything was the opposite.
I hope Elena Mukhina received the Lord Jesus as her Lord and Savior, so that one day she'll be enjoying everlasting life, full of love and where suffering will not exist anymore.
Thank you for all the videos.

Thank you for all these lovely comments. I also learned about her story during Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021. Since then, I couldn’t forget her and also started searching for more information about her. Then I learned how to make simple videos for her. To my surprise that more and more people watched those videos and subscribed to this channel. Then I made more videos and also uploaded some photos of her. Moreover, I created those playlists which include videos from other CZcams channels. I also noticed that the number of viewers and subscribers have increased over 200 due to Paris 2024 Olympics. Thank you for your support.

Mukhina also was the victim of her coach’s ambitions. Injuries prematurely ended his gymnastics career, while his brother medaled in two Olympics. The pressure he no longer could physically place upon himself was disastrously redirected to his student.

Elena’s story is one of the most heartbreaking in the history of sports. She was abused used and then scapegoated. A lifetime of dedication to a sport that caused her living death to be honest. Instead of nurturing her amazing talent and cherishing her, her country broke her and her spirit. This is NOT sportsmanship or honor! The Olympic spirit is NOT about cruelly whipping an athlete into submission to obtain points for your government! This was the fatal flaw in the system that allowed such abuse and exploitation. She was nothing more than a product to her country! It’s a true horror story that was swept under the rug to protect those seeking glory. There’s NO glory or reverence in this kind of abuse! Elena was a treasure athletically and personally. She should have been respected and protected not broken and thrown away. Her talent and sacrifice will be remembered though. Those that know her story know who she was and will share her legacy. She will always be the best. They cannot take away her history. They cannot erase her name. Elena Mukhina, remember her!! 💖

Her coach should have taken most of the responsibilities for Lena’s injury despite the fact that he was not present at the time of the accident. The long-term abuse had already impaired Lena’s judgment, causing her to make a bad decision on the training. I don’t comment on the system. I believe Lena still loved her country.

IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch has always helped Elena financially. He understood perfectly well that yesterday she was applauded, and many young people dreamed of her, but today Elena needed help. It was like this. The assistant went to the kitchen, and Juan Antonio Samaranch stayed with Elena. He treated her with warmth.

This is so emotional, thanks a lot for the video. It is important to show what she did after her injury, and she did a lot! She is an example for all of us, when we can´t achieve something, when we feel we are incapacitated mentally and phisically to do something, even emotionally and she shows us we can do it, we only have to find the way to do it our way, not the way that others want us to do it. I learnt a lot with this video. Others only show pity for her, with this video you show that she was a corageous woman that kept doing things until the end of her days, not everybody can say that, not even people without phisical problems. Sorry I´m not native in English, I hope I explained myself. Greetings from my little country Uruguay, far away from Russia, but we have russian descendants that live here, most of them live in a community called San Javier village, we have a connection :)

I just can't imagine after you been so physically fit to go through something like that to extreme opossite way! oh Lord! It really took her a lot of courage to move on and keep living life. I trully admired her. For sure God somehow blessed her, and gave her strength. It mentions also about he deep religious faith. Well I am sure that she is in a better place with the Lord.
