I'm not very regular at posting and mostly just take pictures of insects and butterflies and nice things like that: / naturally_jb
This year is my first ever growing veg. I planted 75 tomato seeds thinking if only a few germinate I'll be happy. I had 75 healthy plants. I've managed to give away half of them so far to family and neighbours 😂
Don’t feel bad. I did the same. Only planned to have 6 plants but have 15. I just couldn’t bring myself to throw out the unneeded seedlings 😂
Always sensible to have spares, accidents happen, slugs munch, etc, so spares give you peace of mind.
I grow 2 of each variety of my tomatoes, aiming to plant one. You will always find willing takers for your spares too.

This is so relatable.
I don't have a conservatory or polytunnel so I sow my tomatoes indoors under grow lights. I use 2 28 cell seed trays from Containerwise for this, so 56 in total. But in case there is poor germination, I put more than 1 seed per cell (except for the very expensive special blight resistant seeds) but of course they all germinate anyway.
I find it so sad to thin them out and throw away, so... Fortunately, I have many friends and colleagues who want to adopt my tomato plants. 😀
You’ve cheered me up with your cheerfulness. You’ll learn with your tomatoes…..maybe! I’ve been gardening for years and still have far too many tomatoes! Every year I tell myself to just have a dozen and look after them properly, but never stick to that!
The light levels have been exceptionally low this year, it’s been a very difficult season so far. Thanks
Measure the quadgrows you can use that for spacing. Roma 's will grow outdoors
Coincidentally I also got exactly 60 tomatoes this year as well! 3 raised beds (4x1,2m) two rows of 10 in each. Already planted outside even though weather has been a bit iffy past couple of days :D
Remember it's only a week past last frost date, we can't be that far behind JB, cept for all my early peas, lettuce, and turnips the pigeons have gorged themselves on lol

i would do 3 as well but the middle one in between the other 2 , not 3 on a straight row if that does make sense.
You made me laugh till the tears were running down my cheeks. 66 tomato plants! 😂 We all do it! Get totally carried away then hate to waste them. You’ll find a few more corners. I have done the same again this year. Way too many tomatoes and peppers. Not counting them. Too embarrassing

Hiya JB. I think it might have been the scent of the Broad Bean flowers. They have a very sweet smell surprisingly. My indoor tomato seedling also look very sad too. I think this season has been weird for germination on some things and potting on has been a bit hit and miss. Courgettes? Good. Melons bad on potting on. Tomatoes good germination - sad on transplanting. Perhaps too early or waterlogged? At least you have plenty to fall back on! 🤣 Need to get onto the broad beans. My plan has gone to plot - I'm just sticking things in where the ground is cleared now, so at least I might grow something. What a weird Spring / Early Summer it's been! Cheers, Andy!

I thought I had a lot with 51 tomato plants and 6x8 greenhouse I've shared them out a bit I'm down to 28 tomatoes

I mean... You've got to have some extras, right?! 🤪I have the same problem with chilli plants. Think I have about 24 plants, but I only have room to grow 4-5 decent sized plants (and a couple in smaller pots) on the balcony. Gonna see if I can put some at my parents 🤔Haha loved the "sun sound" 🤣
My brassicas were in too-small containers and planted out late. I'll try again in August. Where oh where are all those plants going?😊
I know how you feel about having too many tomato plants, I’ve just counted mine and I’ve got 79 and no idea where I’m going to grow them all 😂
I've ended up with 87 tomato plants, and I'm sure as hell going to find somewhere for them on the plot, even if I have to buy loads of 30 litre tubs and/or spend a fortune on bags of compost. Thankfully they're almost all blight-resistant varieties, so they can go outside.
laught so hard about the tomato counting i was crying. Also my husband who was working at his desk came into the room see what was up with me. Hilarious and so relatable!
Hi i think you need more self control early on, just think of how many other seeds could be sown instead of more tomatoes....... and i don't mean more chillies 😂😂😂😂

Your brassica look OK! You're supposed to plant them out when 10cm tall according to rhs website. Yours probably look better than mine did when I planted them out. Mine have massively filled out since planting out 2 weeks ago. I also have an abundance of leggy tomatoes 😂

The plot does look gorgeous in the setting sun very picturesque. And I always have too many tomatoes 22 varieties one year with 55 plants. So you have beaten my record 🤣
I hate throwing away tomato seedlings too. I love those as much as you love your chillis. 🤩
Change your compost JB sylvagrow ok for germination but not for potting on. I potted on using Jacks Magic and my tomatos sewn 10 days before yours are all out and 3ft+ tall😊
My tomatoes sown late March in Sylvagrow are 2 ft tall, so the compost may not be the problem.

I finally managed to get rid of my last six spare tomatoes and cucumbers yesterday to anotherof my neighbours after massively over sowing. Just got to work out where I'm going to put eighty lupin seedlings... I've been so busy in the garden over the last ten days or so and finally seemed to get slightly ahead of things. So much so that I got around to sorting out a water butt for my greenhouse yesterday. It had been sat there for a month or so together with a two into one kit for the gutters on the greenhouse. This morning the rain started and just never stopped. A 227l water butt already reached overflow from empty by 5pm this afternoon I kid you not... I was going to say I need a bigger butt but nobody needs that!

If it makes you feel better, I've ended up with 130 tomato plants for my 6ftx12ft plastic tunnel greenhouse. Thinking of planting a tomato hedge 😄
My brassicas are slooooow this year. Just gave up and planted them out

@@JBNat no difference as yet! Though the nematodes and garlic spray seem to be keeping the slugs away

@@jessievanswaaij2971 I potted them on successively from the seed tray in batches, the best ones were in the 10cm pots and had the hot weather while also in the greenhouse. Surprisingly didn't mind the heat too much.
My first year growing from seed in Scotland and I sowed 4 Verandah Red F1 tomatoes, all germinated on my kitchen windowsill on the same day but each one is slightly smaller than the previous one. I had to plant out the biggest yesterday as it has buds on it. Still a week to last frost date here so fingers crossed.
Gem squash and 8 Ball courgette also planted. I don’t have room on my windowsill any more 😂
JB, I have started feeding my tomato plants potted up growing in Sylvgrow they are romping away. All the brassicas are outside as it was too hot in greenhouse for them ( just need to keep an eye on them for creepy crawlies having a quick munch !
JB, go for 3 rows, tomato plants can be close together if you keep cutting their leaves so there is air movement.

I have had the worst year ever for germinating seeds, think it’s down to April being so cold, you can’t have enough tomatoes, I even had to buy some tomato plants for the first time 🤨
I’ve got beetroot growing outside under netting, they seem to prefer a bit of shelter. They’re doing really well so far. Have also planted out my brassicas and butternut squash. I’m in Bristol.
Sounds great! I had an amazing year for beetroot the two years before this, they grew happily and merrily but this year no dice 😕
@@JBNat such a shame, when we think we’ve got it all sorted and then another year things fail. My first lot of beetroots disappeared, the ones that are doing better are my second lot which were direct sown.

JB you could put three in there easily as long as you’re stringing them up and trimming them
Someone said that slugs don't like the red lettuce. So looking like we'll be ditching the green lettuce and would be interesting to see if that's the same for cabbage and Brussels
You and I are running the same time and issues with tomatoes this year. I have 58 perfectly healthy plants and space for 30!
BTW Do you only grow tomatoes in the polyhouse? With the extra, you could do an experiment comparing yields between polyhouse grown and outside grown tomatoes.

I had over 50 tomato plants but I gave some away. I have some now that are languishing in pots that are probably too small for them and I am wondering where to put them too . . .
I did think you might be able to zig-zag plant your tomatoes in the polytunnel - that might increase the space between them - stuff doesn't always have to be in neat rows does it?
I too am going away on holiday for just over two weeks, it is making me feel a bit nervous but I am sure most of my plants will grow ok without me. Fingers-crossed.

I definitely crammed my tomatoes in closer than recommended last year, but they did OK. We grow most of our tomatoes outside; in Wales. Only ones that didn't seem to like the outdoors last year were the Roma tomatoes.
What variety do you find the best outside?

Get all the left over tomatoes outside in those beds JB! Mine grow great outside every year...always die earlier than the indoors, but with that many I'm sure you'll be sick of them by then mate 😂
Honestly jb I think its the sylvagrow, all the wood is robbing nitrogen from the plants
Interestingly in my compost trials so far the sylvagrow has the healthiest looking seedlings!
It's not when they're little, give them a week or two and they'll be yellow

Maybe to warm in the glass house for your brassicas get them out they look OK 👍
Put that brassica tray outside JB .Its a bit too late to sow brassicas now .Youd be better waiting till August or buy a few punnets from the garden centre if they have any left .Maybe just concentrate on getting those squashes out before your holidays 🙂

JB I think your trays all look very dry in the Sylvia grow. Why don’t you do another trial? Plant up half of each of your brassicas into another compost. I’m sure they’ll romp away x
They're all plenty heavy for sure. It's interesting in all the trials I've done with seedlings and tomatoes so far it's still sylvagrow performing the best!
Maybe plant the tomatoes in diagonal rows... have fun
Am I missing something? Your brassicas are looking good. I put mine in the beds a few weeks ago and they were smaller than that

Was that just one broccoli raab plant? You need to sow loads of seeds I think. Treat it more like spinach or growing beets just for the tops rather than like a single plant Calabrese. I basically sowed about 200 seeds - two rows in a 1.2 metre wide bed and they all grew really well together. Got way too many actually and they are all bolting already. Next year (or maybe later this year I will just do a single row and sow a bit thinner. Both Jesse at plot 37 and Steve at Green Side Up put a load of seeds in a bed so I just copied those guys.
Or is there something different about number of days variety? I am just growing a 40 day variety.
Well that would explain a lot wouldn't it 😅 I thought they got to around 20-30cm high and then gave yoh bushy leafy growth but I have no idea why I thought that hahahahaha. Now I know! Thank you!

I wish I lived closer, I could do with more tomatoes, I could take your excess off your hands! I had terrible germination this year and you can never have enough tomatoes in my opinion.
