The writing, Malkovich's performance, the cinematography... This is one of the best monologues I have ever watched on tv. I am an atheist and this is a fictional speech, still, I am amazed and moved by it
Because this came from a PHILOSOPHICAL and HUMANIST standpoint, not like the insensitive, illogical and unreceptive "traditional" Catholic sermons. I would know as a Catholic. When I was younger, I would spend most homilies poking holes through the reasoning of the priest. LOL. Malkovich's monologues would appeal to anyone with common sense.
Now that was amazing. So much emotion from Cardinal Voiello. Perhaps the only time he has showed such human-like emotiond aside from his interactions with Sister Esther in Season 1.
Same thought came ti me... Who wrote this? This is so uniting, the human experience as being an outsider. We need reminders of it, so that we wouldn't be, feel so alone. So beautiful speech.
Mate, that was almost 600 years ago. Get over it already. Maybe the greeks should've fought harder to save their crumbling empire instead of begging Rome for help - the same Rome that they broke away from in 1054. The Pope was under no obligation whatsoever to help the greek schismatics.
"I'm so opressed" says the first world citizen who avoids taxes, with internet and running water in its household and has so much food it's literally obese :(
That I can accept as an argument in the real world... this is just a piece of art, and as in all arts, it offers reflections. Don't forget there is a creator behind this, Sorrentino, which has explored all this in his previous works... the decadent experience of living. In faith we look for relief, we're all troubled and misunderstood, but no human or non-human figure will bring ease to our life... that is what I believe the series has told us so far... that the path is up to us, through acceptance.
Feels strange that a speech made by writers for a fictional character can be so good.
I heard Malkovich wrote this himself, not 100% sure. But yes Paolo sorrentino is amazing

Thank you for writing and sharing my exact same thoughts.
To me, the best part of the show along with the funeral scene. Just stunning.

I stand corrected. It was Sister Mary.
Whenever I am drunk, I am listening that speech, beautiful
Absolutely fantastic acting. Malcovich is a genius!
Absolutely stunning. Im moved.
"They will remember us.😢😢❤
Soundtrack is Falling Peter Gregson
If a Pope was this charismatic in real life, I suspect a lot more people would take up Catholicism.
If we had a Pope like this, I’d convert immediately
We don't need people like you in our religion Christianity, especially in catholic Church. We don't want pagans like you.
@@texas4478 Tell that to your Pachamama Pope
@Texas LOL. Don't mistake Roman Catholicism for your Southern Baptist cults.
@@noahdanielg that's what I am going to tell to the pope , also I will say to bless my double edge sword and my crusade
@@texas4478 God wants everyone to be saved.
Thanks great scene
If the pope was like this I never would have lapsed.
Okey I probably would.
This is beautiful
catholic or not, this speech is very meaningful
Suddenly, I can love being a Catholic. 😅
Who should I thank for this ? Absolutely moving.

this would be a pope I would gladly follow
Stunning a church I could support
It doesn't actually mean anything. Compare this to the "demonic" address of Pius XIII to the cardinals, then place your bets.
The Pope didn’t help the orthodox Christians (mainly Greeks) back in 1453 and let the Turks to capture Constantinople.
Why should he help Heretics that hate him?

We are all messed up. We thus created a story of the God as a sanctory for the lost souls.
Pius XIII are the best, this one is just a antipope.
pius agrees with his message tho
Catering to the self absorbed.. me me me..
Narcissism is an epidemic
Who are you to judge?
Everything good until that... "We are the Church" 🙄
Why?
"I'm so opressed" says the first world citizen who avoids taxes, with internet and running water in its household and has so much food it's literally obese :(
Oppression Olympics is so pointless, everyone has their own problems
Relative privation isn't an argument dude.
"sorrow has no hierarchy"
