#NHL #Latebloomers - Sport
Hope you all enjoyed! ( and also enjoyed the little jokes. Never thought I could include a survivor reference in a video XD )
If you’re gonna reference Survivor, Coach clips are the way to go!
Tim Thomas was incredible in the NHL, you’re sure couldn’t beat him very often when he played for the B’s. Great work once again, Paul👍🏻
You*
Thanks Finnian!
He single handedly won the Stanley cup
Laine will be the next late bloomer, he will score 600 goals in the first 5 games of next season
lol i'm sure
Lol how to the F is he a late bloomer?! The guy was drafted 2nd overall and has scored 40 plus more then once..
I was pretty hyped for him in 2016 season, I heard if he scored 50 Toronto would've regretted not talking him. I just heard it during the time
I think McDavid is actually going to be the next late bloomer. He hasn’t played nearly to the standards that everyone held him to back in 1997. I’m saying he wins the Conn Smythe in his NHL debut
He’s got the talent. He doesn’t have it in between the ears but if he works on that no doubt.
You forgot the Great Johnny Bower, who worked the hard way to the NHL, he stood out in Cleveland before finally getting a shot in 1953, beating out the great Gump Worsley for the starting job. Then Worsley won it back, Bower returning to the AHL for a further 3 seasons in Providence then Cleveland. But the Maple Leafs' Punch Imlach came calling in 1958 and got Johnny to give the NHL another shot, Bower would never sniff the AHL again. He would backstop the Leafs to 4 cups in the 1960s earning a Vezina and sharing a Vezina with fellow great Terry Sawchuk.
I love the guys you mentioned, though a fan of the old timers of the 30s-60s, you picked guys I remember fondly. But Johnny Bower cannot be forgotten.
It’s insane that Thomas’ breakout year came at age 34 as a goalie. Most goalie are on the downturn of their careers at that age, he was just getting warmed up. Not sure we’ll ever see another goalie starting their career in their 30’s. Teams just don’t operate like that anymore.
I got to play a round of golf with Tim Thomas at a charity outing in his hometown sometime around 2005/2006. He was a really nice laid back guy. It was really cool seeing him have the success that he did.
Thomas just had this style that hadn't been seen since Hasek. He didn't care what part of his body stop the puck and just dove around. And I remember copying that style (Mostly because I'm awful at hockey) and let me tell you. It still works XD
Thomas was my favourite goalie since he played that one season in Jokerit. He just saved shots that nobody else would.
Timmy Thomas was the Modern Day Gump Worsley. What an enigma.
Great comparison actually. Both had quite an interesting stocky stature for their times, but yet both were amazing.
Carter Vehaghie I a good one to. Man bounced around the league. Played a bit with Tampa. And then signed with Florida and became a superstar
Tim Thomas in SM-Liiga era ❤ Legend
The Survivor clip tho. HAHA
Glad someone enjoyed it 😂😂. ( Ozzy shoulda won that szn btw )
I think Corey Crawford deserves mention too. Spent so long in the minors before finally getting his chance. And I feel still a very overlooked amazing player.
Stanley Cup Champion Mark Streit. Solid player who really didn’t get talked about enough
Tim Thomas graduated from my HS 😂and our city finally got a sign up for him
Davison!
Pierre-Édouard Bellemare is a prime example too and his story is so interesting
the reference to coach from survivor was GOLD
🤣🤣🤣. Ppl wouldn’t think I like those shows but I LOVE Big Brother & Survivor! I’m actually applying for Big Brother! Gotta do next szn cause I miss turning 21 by a month. But I hadda do it 😂😂
@idontgivetkachuk i believe in you bro. ill be rooting for you 🙌
I loved Giordano when he was here in Calgary, and he is definitely one of the greatest late bloomers, and greatest Flames of all time. Deserves to have his number retired for sure
The man is all class, all heart.
Bro the Burrows bit LMAO nice work Paul!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I hadda throw a survivor reference in there!!
Jack Campbell better be on here. Drafted really high for a goalie, barely played in the nhl, stuck the minors/ECHL for years… then becomes a solid backup for the Kings, then a STARTER for the leafs.
and now in Edmonton…
@@Spartan086 not great in EDM but yeah
Tage Thompson is crazy.
I know Tim Thomas is the more recent goalie, but what about Jean-Sebastian Giguere?
Man spent 5 seasons as an unremarkable backup goalie for the Whalers, then the Flames, then the Flames' AHL affiliate. Then he got traded to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, spent some more time in the lower levels, until he was finally called up as Dominik Roussel's replacement as Guy Hebert's backup, and *then* he took the starting job from Hebert and promptly evolved into a fucking steel wall.
63 saves on his playoff debut against the Red Wings, a 60 save performance a few nights later, and then a shutout a few nights after that, all en route to a losing Conn Smythe SCF performance, and he only got better after that, eventually backstopping Anaheim to their 06-07 title.
And of course, I'm definitely not bringing this up because I'm an Anaheim Ducks fan or anything, no siree bob.
For sure that’s a great option! His conn smyth run was insane despite him losing the series..
That was a disgusting playoff run by giggy...... wings scored in the 5 goals in a 4 game sweep and lost the series if my memory serves me right
Glenn Hall may be the actual oldest Conn Smythe winner. Whe was born in 31 & won it in 68.
Love the vids Paul, keep up the good work
Maybe not as prominent, but Magnus Arvedson of the Ottawa Senators was a true late bloomer. He started pro in Sweden, but didn't make Swedish Elite league until age 23, was drafted 119th in the nhl at age 26, and went on to be a close runner up for the selke trophy in his 2nd season
As a kid, I was always the smallest in my class and was definitely pushed around a lot. For reference, even at age 12, I was only 4ft 5.
I have a clear memory of seeing St.Louis at the All-Star Game in '03 winning the puck relay competition when I was just starting to really get into NHL as an 8 yo and it blew my mind to see this small player beat everyone. And his story of being an underdog because of his size definitely hit close to home for me too.
Ironically, I had quite a growth spur in my teens and now stand as... 5ft 8
Not one comment about arguably the best goalie ever????
1 word DOMINATOR, drafted in like 82 or 83 didnt come the nhl until 91/92
While St.Louis was in the Calgary system, he was arguably they're best player for their AHL team, the Saint John Flames. Representing them at an All-Star Game one season.
I'm happy to see Thompson do well, but I would hope that people realize that he's in his prime. Most forwards enter their prime around 24-25, and usually decline around 29-30. I'm surprised to see people saying Thompson is better than Robertson, especially when Robo has been consistently great and is younger. Thompson is fun to watch though, he moves like Lemieux out there.
So true, where the hell Tage Thompson found all those moves
Jason Blake was like St. Louis lite. Went undrafted because of his size and eventually made it to the NHL and broke out when he was 29.
always love these vids
Always love the support ❤️🔥
Thank you for another phenomenal video. I hope that Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kaako make the cut in a future video. Too young to be called busts but they've both been disappointing.
Thanks EM! I have always liked Kakko so I hope he turns things around too!
Both of them are old enough to be considered busts at this point. Their play in the future can change the current outlook
Not to mention Puljujärvi.
Tage Thompson went from a healthy scratch to a top scorer in the league incredible
Shane Doan my boy
Love him as a yotes fan
The Coach reference 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂. I’m so glad people knew it! I’m a huge Survivor Big Brother & The Amazing Race fan outside of hockey!
Amazing video
I always found it ironic how the 2010 finals convinced GM's that you could win with a less than stellar goalie (Niemi/Boucher/Leighton) only for the next 2 cups to be absolutely stolen by arguably 2 of the greatest post seasons performances by Thomas and Quick. My lady is a Canuck fan and still marvels at Thomas run that year that broke her heart. 😉
quick did not steal that cup. the kings destroyed every team that year. Thomas sure made some season saving saves on the bruins Stanley cup
@@mathieulebrun5589 The .946 save percentage and Conn Smythe tell a different story.
@@1bert719 I don't think there was one game the kings were not leading in shots. they became a juggernaut just before the playoff. still a great goalie but Thomas was just ridiculous
@@mathieulebrun5589 I agree that the Kings were excellent, but Quick too made them impossible to beat with the majority of games being decided by less than a 2 goal margin. As a Coyotes fan I saw this up close and he straight up robbed us. Thomas however was yet another level of excellence. Easily the best playoff goaltending I've ever seen.
@@1bert719 kings led all playoff series 3-0. Thomas won 3 game 7, last 2 by shutout and first one in ot against my habs and price
Love the vids btw
Thanks!
Some good examples to never give up
For sure!
You forgot to mention Streit had a stint in Philadelphia
Great Video Paul! St Louis isn’t just an excellent player, but coaching great for the Habs.
Thanks Rich! I’ve always liked him despite what he did to CGY in 2004 😂
Aye we’re the same height. Im here with you brother! Short gang
Lets goooo!!
Mark Steit wasn't very strong defensively with the Canadiens. A lot of his time in Montreal they had him playing in the bottom 6 as a winger instead - A huge threat on the PP though.
Another banger video
Thanks buddy! 🔥
I came here just to see if burrows made the list and point out he should be! But, he is there lol 🤣 (added later) with the st.louis late bloomer..... What about kipper? I remember when he was acquired as a third string from San-Jose too well... We all know what kipper turned out to be
Timmy Thomas!!!!!
Dude love the coach aka dragon slayer reference 🤜
When i think of a late bloomer Blake Wheeler comes to mind for me and obviously Tim Thomas is prob the greatest late bloomer ever imo
Wheeler's a good one. He always had the potential but it took him awhile to put it together. I remeber Boston fans hated him because he was a big guy who didn't throw his weight around on the ice. Winnipeg was the making of wheeler
Need to send this video to all the people who say a guy's a "bust" after one or two seasons. Hell, I've seen them say it before they even play a full season.
Joe Thornton is a good example of that: he had an abysmal rookie season for a first overall pick and people were ready to call him a bust right away!
@@estellegrignon Steve Yzerman is another that comes to mind. You can go back and find news articles about how he'll never lead the Red Wings to a cup and they should trade him, etc.
@@KevynKing that's crazy knowing he literally won the Calder immediately after being drafted! I know the Wings also considered trading him to Ottawa, though this had a lot to do with him clashing with then coach Scotty Bowman.
Joe Sakic is another example of an all-time captain who was seen as unable to push his team to great success, until he won that first Cup in Colorado
Nice Benjamin coach wade dragon slayer reference
Yes Coach Wade will forever be a Vancouver legend for slaying the dragon ;) 😂😂
Giordano deserves more then just a comment... especially over Mark Streit...
I’ve talked about him and his story sm times as opposed to Streit who I have yet to.
@@idontgivetkachuk fair, thanks for the confirmation
@@nahbrah2411 yup. As a flames fan ofc I’d normally dedicate a section to any Flame ;) 😂😂
In my thoughts i think vejmelka for arizona
Soon to be added on this list: Pheonix Copley
Joe Hicketts is going to be here when he puts up 800 points next year (in 3 games)
🤯
Marty St. Louis is definitely not 5’8. Players are often listed as being 1 or 2 inches taller than they really are. He’s probably around 5’6
Why was Johnny Bower not in here! He spent a decade in the minors with the Cleveland Barons and then came to win 4 Stanley Cups with the Leafs when was already past the age most players have their prime in.
Tons of players said, Tim Thomas was the hardest to score on out of all the goalies back in 2010
Kids these days don't remember Brian Rafalski. Never drafted, I guess no one in the 90s believed that a 5'10'' defenseman could do much in the NHL. After years of NCAA and european leagues he finally makes his NHL debut at 26 - and then goes on to play 11 seasons, wins 3 Stanley cups, 3-time All-Star, 800+ games and 500+ points. Three time olympian for the US with two silver medals, back in 2002 - 2010 when olympic hockey really meant something, had the "A" on his jersey at the 2010 Olympics and was awarded as the best defenseman of the tournament.
Video idea... players that almost made it into the hall. I dont know if its really somethong they talk about though.
I’m 5’6” and when I first joined the military I weighed 120LBS, thankfully I grew up on the streets of Boston so I was tough. Thankfully now at almost 40 years old I’m still 5’6” obviously but I’m 165 lbs so I don’t worry too much about people trying to test me anymore. I used to have “short man syndrome” as my mother used to call it (back when she was alive) but then after being in the military and taking a lot of combat training I knew what I was capable of and that I didn’t have to “prove it” to ANYONE. Yes I’m sure people still make judgements off my size and even my fiancé did until one night when we were out….now she said “now I know why you walk around with such a confidence,
Like you think you’re a badass…” haha I just chuckled about it.
Several guys from the StL Blues program in that era were late bloomers. Tage Thompson, Jordan Kyrou, Jordan Binnington all blowing up into legit NHL stars in their mid to late 20's.
Binnington sucks though
oh look i found the casual
@@poopcrust3400he had like 1 or 2 good seasons
Martin St. Louis Habs LEGEND
He was phenomenal in 2014 for the Rangers, coming over from Tampa and leading them to the SC finals. Completely lost it the following season.
I'm glad you're back from the North Pole. Elves have it hard.
2011 Cup does not happen without TT
Alexis lafreniere will be on this list soon
😳
you also forgot at add that Martin St. Louis also has his number retired by the lighting
👏👏👏👏
I miss Giordano ;__;
In what parallel world was Shane Doan considered for the HOF??
Hall of Very Good for sure, and much deserving to have his number up in the rafters for being captain for 14 years. But his numbers are nowhere near HHoF numbers
It was Iginla Doan Hossa & Lowe as some potential nominees for that year I believe.
Got it. Yeah it was his first year of eligibility so the conversation arose. Obviously I don’t think he’ll make it, but I hadda bring it up nonetheless haha
T&T blows it up lol
5:47 I spy a Miss Universe, a Miss USA (who is now dead), and a Steve Harvey impersonator.
Tage the 🐐
No you my guy ;) Thanks for watching buddy! Love the rebrand
First view for seconds time out of last 3 vids
panarin snubbed
9:30 I hate my Flyers
5’4 💀
Martin St.Louis was the worst player in NHL99 video game.
Really?! What was his overall 😂
Mark Giordano anyone?
I want my sport back. Not soccer the worst sport there is. Nothing happens except flopping around if you are touched
touched that used to be an embellishment penalty they never call it anymore. But ufc is bigger than ever.
The Survivor clip tho. HAHA
