  • “If you’re eating something that came wrapped in plastic and contains even one ingredient that wouldn’t be found in most household kitchens, it is most likely ultra-processed food,” writes today’s guest, Dr. Chris van Tulleken. He’s an Oxford-educated infectious diseases doctor, with a Ph.D. in molecular virology, as well as a BBC television personality. His latest book, an international bestseller, is Ultra-Processed People: Why We Can’t Stop Eating Food That Isn’t Food. He says that North Americans get 50-60% of their calories from ultra-processed food.
So how is ultra-processed food affecting our bodies and our brains? How is it really bad for us, and how can you optimize your wellness in an ultra-processed world? Medcan director of food and nutrition Leslie Beck, RD, answers these questions and more in her conversation with Dr. Chris van Tulleken.

Same. I read over 130 books last year, and I say without a doubt that book was the most impactful from the whole year. I want to shout this information from the rooftop! the fact that 6 corporations make up 75% of the world's food on supermarket shelves, AND that their agenda is not to feed and nourish people, but to create profits should scare people into action. We must make changes.

Better to Boycott big food. People got fatter when the local greengrocer and butcher and baker were swallowed up by the big supermarkets.
I went back to buying at my local butchers and green grocery. Its cheaper as well.
Plus the stuff is fresh and it just makes sense to stop buying food that is addictive and makes you fat and ill.

Two weeks into intermittent fasting and restricting UPFs to just 10% of my diet (a treat here or there)and I can already feel the difference! I feel calmer, more energetic, requires less sleep, and better mood. Unbelievable.

He needs to do a colab with someone who knows how you go back to real food in the modern world. A book of food plans and recipes etc. plenty of great cheap easy meals from cuisines round the world.

A good cheap and easy start to this is sprouting one's own lentils and peas. You only need a large jar and small sieve to be able to tip up the jar when rinsing. Also, soak almonds overnight for snacking. I am stumbling my way forward on this. Good luck on the journey!

Your reply is exactly how we arrived to this point in the first place. Wanting someone to tell you what and how to eat...
Education is king....that’s from the very beginning, forget all you ‘know’ about food and go on a truth search...you’ll be amazed how many lies we’ve all been fed.

Shop the Asian supermarkets (if you're near any). They tend to have huge selections of whole foods and raw ingredients for meals at bargain prices.
As a bonus, while they also carry plenty of processed food, those items tend to be organized around the perimeter of the store, not in prime place in the center (the very opposite of the way conventional grocery stores are set up, with the real food around the perimeter and the fake junk in the center).

(You fast all day during Ramadan and then binge every evening on heaps of fried foods and sweets. That's not healthy fasting; it's a sanctimonious facade for decadence.)
