- The Laver Cup has just started and we already have our first controversy... Last night Gael Monfils and Felix Auger-Aliassime got into a bit of an argument, because Monfils fully treated the match between them as an exhibition, but Felix wanted it to be a bit more serious. So what is it- is the tournament a full-on exhibiton tournament or should players actually try?

I got to side with Felix here because he took this match seriously(obviously) and playing in Laver Cup is a privilege not a joke; McEnroe and Borg are picking some of the best players to represent and win for their team; Monfils treating this as an exhibition is probably not going to make Borg invite him back for future Laver Cups
I am really not sure how Monfils missed the memo about the competitive side of the tournament, he literally watched two matches before, which were competitive, but then he forgot about it?😂

Gael was 6th at atp with the big 4 ahead. His won against federer and nadal, had match point against Djoko.
He is not part of the big 4, ok but his career is exceptional.

Gael Monfis likes to goof around even on the main tour he is always entertaining the crowds in his matches similar to Tiafoe. I honestly, feel if Monfis was more serious on the court he could of achieved more probally winning a GS too late now and like he's says he is 37 years old too old to change his habit.
Has Monfils ever taken this career seriously? That's the reason he never became a champion. Too much showboating and not enough results. I purely watched yesterday because I wanted to drool over Arthur Fils haha.

I had been under the impression that after the prize money to the victors and participation fees the remaining funds went to charitable organizations.
Today a poster on the board said that this was a money making venture for Federer. I didn't believe it and I've been researching and can't find out if it's true or false. I do know that many of Federer's sponsors are also sponsors of the Laver Cup so perhaps that's what the poster was referring to. But I also read that he owns it..

It is, but Laver cup is mostly competitive fun, Monfils was a bit too careless in that moment that caused the confrontation, but it's all good now, and there is no doubt that Gael is valuable for this tournament

The thing is that why would he go an give explanation...I wouldn't if I was Gael... screwed Felix or anyone I have in front with all the respect...It is a show for the people to have fun...if they want to get serious then you have the other tournaments that price money, ranking and so on....but this tournament is to have fun.....

Felix is a much better player than Gael his young and will win grand slam 1 day all lower ranked players have there day but the reason there not as successful as there opponents there not consistent enough and this what Gael failed to deliver in his career I’m not saying he was useless cos he wasn’t his very talented but can’t produce the tennis of his youth !!!

It’s definitely not supposed to be an exhibition. Federer has always wanted The Laver Cup to be a serious team competition. To start clowning around the way Monfils did showed disrespect to his opponent, to Roger, and more importantly, the crowd.

I didn't see the match so I really can't comment with any authority on this. I agree wtih Nightmare's take, and can see both sides. Ultimately, I agree with FAA who is such a respectable and top-notch guy. There is definitely a line in the sand with showboating and lazy-balling. If you cross it, it can be seen as disrespectful.
