  • VOCES8 collaborates with Nick Deutsch (Oboe) and Alexander Hamilton (Organ) to record from 'Jesus bleibet meine Freude' from the cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147'. The recording was made at St John the Evangelist Church in Islington, London and features on VOCES8's 15th Anniversary album, 'After Silence' (www.voces8.com/aftersilence).
    Text:
    Words: Martin Jahn (c.1620-82)
    Jesus bleibet meine Freude,
    Meines Herzens Trost und Saft,
    Jesus wehret allem Leide,
    Er ist meines Lebens Kraft,
    Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne,
    Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne;
    Darum laß ich Jesum nicht
    Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht.
    Translation:
    Jesus remains my joy,
    My heart’s comfort and sap.
    Jesus obviates all misfortune,
    He is my life’s strength,
    My eye’s delight and sun,
    My soul’s treasure and bliss;
    Therefore I will not let Jesus go
    From my heart and sight.

      @@JayR-uy8gl , every professional oboe player I have worked with can circular breath quite well.....they are so often called upon to do it, they regard it as a necessary skill. A couple of them told me that when they first learned to do it, their teachers had them smoke a joint first to reduce the natural inhibition that the body can have to controlling the airway in that manner; once they got the knack, the joint was no longer necessary.....

    • @kronik907
      @kronik907 Před 4 lety +12

      @@youtuuba that last bit is BS and makes me doubt the rest of your comment. I learned to circular breathe playing tuba, mostly as a party trick.
      There is no special breathing technique. You just fill your mouth with air, use your tongue to block off your throat, and breathe in very sharp and quick through your nose, while you use your tongue and cheek muscles to compress the air in your mouth. Then unblock your throat from your mouth and continue to play as normal till you need another short breath.
      Describing it was harder than actually doing it. It feels very natural when you do it, and only works on instruments that don't require a ton of airflow. EG: It's probably possible to do on a flute, but it would be way harder.
      I guess a joint might help people relax and stop thinking so hard about it because it isn't as difficult as the general media makes it out to be.

      I wondered about that. (Whether he was using circular breathing or not.) As a trombone player, I use circular breathing mostly to extend a phrase or a long note. I've heard jazz reed players use the technique, but not classical. Very musically effective in this piece. I find it impossible to use circular breathing on a moving line, with a good result, so I found this performance to be particularly impressive.

    As many others already commented here... their German pronunciation is not only perfectly German - even for a German native speaker it is a truly beautiful pronunciation almost no German is able to speak.
    Really asking myself where they have learnt it! :)
    That the British have extremely talented musicians is a well known phenomenon.

    Just to be certain, I have listened to this tremendous, perfect performance at least 100 times now. Each and every time, a few tears are shed. I remain firmly convinced that this is the most perfect version I have ever enjoyed of what is, in my opinion, the best of Bach, which of course lies beside so much genius.

      It is a beautiful performance as is that of the father of modern oboe playing, Leon Goosens. His tempo is slightly faster:

That provides enough air for him to just not face a 'black out' while playing pieces like this one. It should not last too long, however. 😅😖
