  • Chrysler's new minivan is more than just a re-name of the popular Town & Country, it's an all-new family hauler that bundles all the best features of the Caravan and Town & Country with many of the popular features from the competition. The combination creates the best minivan on sale in America stiff competition for the Honda Odyssey. Chrysler's rabbit in the hat will be the upcoming Pacifica Hybrid, the first plug-in hybrid minivan in America. Stay tuned for a full review on the hybrid coming soon.

    This is absolutely the very best minivan review that I've ever seen. I've been shopping for a minivan for quite some time and I have literally watched dozens and dozens of minivan reviews. Your review is by far the most thorough, I catching, detailed and highly shots than any other I've seen. It's the most professional video with terrific editing. I can't thank you enough the time and energy that you've spent in producing this high quality video and I'll be sure to look at other videos from you as well.

    BTW - the full-stop-and-hold adaptive cruise is one of the MOST FRUSTRATING things about my 2015 Charger 392 SRT - it will hold the stop for 3 seconds, then beep and let go of the stop. I cannot, for the life of me figure out how _that_ is a safer default mode of operation than holding the stop. Really happy to hear it has this. Thanks for calling this very niche/specific behavior out.

    As I think of my retirement (and fishing) or just going camping for the weekend, that removable seat will sure come in handy! I love that stow & go. Makes the minivan so much more versatile, like a mini RV. Enough room for an inflatable mattress for one.

    Alex, we've owned a 2011 Odyssey EX-L and now a Pacifica Touring-L, both mid-trim levels of their respective brands. Your comparison is spot on. The Pacifica's seats lose to the Odyssey in terms of comfort, but it's chassis and ergonomics get those points back. Add to that the awesomeness of Stow-n-Go and remote start and you've got yourself a winner. Also, the price for our Touring-L in 2017 is the same as the Odyssey's EX-L was back in 2011 (we were able to score $8000 off MSRP on the Pacifica, your dealer experience may vary, as opposed to Honda's refusal to put any money on the hood), representing a better value. Keep up the good work!

    • @CaptainDawg02
      @CaptainDawg02 Před 7 lety +1

      Edward Grimenstein Honda does negotiate...you need to go below invoice into their holdback. They also have a much higher resale. Chrysler by giving all this money away, their poor reliability, and flooding the market with the rental cars...it really hurts your ability to sell/trade this van for anything.

      That's what makes them bad, mining and processes generated from the battery production create a lot of toxic waste, instead of co2 a normal car would produce

    • @PancakeVibes
      @PancakeVibes Před 5 lety +2

      Gustavo Mercado Yes, that’s true. But electric cars are harmful to the environment to make but when you use the car to drive, it’s clean for the environment. While gasoline cars aren’t harmful to the environment to make. But they are harmful to the air when you use the car to drive. Overall, electric would probably be much better cause the car would last 5-15 years.

    This minivan is amazing! I never liked minivans, but when this came out I did. The seats are awesome and the storage in the second row and the first row are very cool and handy and practical. I usually would go for a three row suv like a Cadillac escalade or chevy suburban, but they are very very expensive. These minivans are cheap and look great. Another thing that I found cool is the gear switch. I've never seen anything like it. Its definitely a nice minivan.

    Most informative review available anywhere...thank you for your detailed and easy to follow coverage. After researching all day, the main area of concern is reliability and shifting consistency of the ZF 9-speed transmission, especially holding higher gears too long before downshifting. I personally have questions about gear hunting while towing but no one has reviewed that aspect of the vehicle yet. Other issues are no cup holder or USB charger on the driver's side in the 3rd seat with the vacuum option in the Limited version. Several reviewers also comment on the lower comfort level of the 2nd row Stow-and-Go seats and the non-adjustable armrests on the front seats. Chrysler has taken a major swing at this segment and it is time for me to upgrade my Odyssey Touring. I'm sold after reviewing the car at the dealership and considering the strong: ride, handling, steering and braking reviews out there. That coupled with the quiet and comfortable interior with maximum flexibility seals the deal as consumers wait endlessly for the release of the new Odyssey. If Chrysler would just extend that powertrain warranty to 10/100,000 I'd feel better about this decision. I do feel good about an opportunity to buy an American badge again...even if it is ultimately owned by Fiat and built in Canada.

    Great review, Alex! The exterior styling of the Pacifica is one of my favorite looking minivans, with the Sedona trailing right behind it. I have a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan that is starting to show it's age. It has served me well. No major problems. Just had regular oil changes, tires, new hoses, and battery. I have been looking at the Pacifica and can not find any info on the adjustable gas pedal. The Town and Country Touring L has it. I am leaning towards the Pacifica, and being only 5"1" would love to have an adjustable pedal as opposed to having to mod it myself after purchase.

    You would have thought Toyota would be the first one to bring in a Sienna Hybrid given their mastery over their HSD system. Good job Chrysler on beating everyone to the punch. This is one of the few cars from FCA which I think it quite nice. Problem is the Minivan in North America is a dying segment, killed by ironically the less practical but more image 3 row SUV.
    I didn't care much for the Caravan; it was cheap and felt it, only selling by its virtue of bargain pricing & large size. The Pacifica is a really nice van, a good thing as the new Odyssey is also quite nice. I hope this car succeeds or it may signal the end of the minivan segment altogether.
    I'm anxiously waiting to see how the PHEV Pacifica will perform. A minivan that can get 30MPG+ sounds glorious.

    I love how detailed you are. I do have a question though. Safety should be at the top of the list. How come there are not safety ratings or reviews used? Like IIHS? For the Pacifica it gets a TOP SAFTY PICK PLUS, which is amazing. I would like to see you add a new category "Safety" please. Thank you for all your hard work you are amazing.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  Před 7 lety +3

      +Dwight Jones the prime reason is that when we review new cars the IIHS rating is not available when we are filming. After a new vehicle is released it can take up to a full year for the IIHS to test a car.

      Alex, I'm a big fan and someone who survived a very very grave accident in a Volvo. I'd love to see you dedicate some shorter videos to describing safety comparisons. At the very least you should mention things like how different the results in a small offset crash are between an Explorer and a Pilot. Or even more drastic, an Odyssee and a Quest. There are some cars that you've reviewed that no one who cares about their health should consider buying when the market has so many cars with wonderful safety. Otherwise, keep up the wonderful work.

    I currently have an 06 Odyssey and have driven the Pacifica Limited and I was impressed with it. I’ve looked at the Sedona which has some very nice styling but the inability to remove the seats takes it out of the running. I don’t need stow-n-go (although it is nice) just as long as I can remove the seats when needed. One thing on stow -in-go is if the wells are empty kids and stomp their feet on them and it makes a lot of racket. The current Odyssey and Sienna styling do not appeal to me
    What I would have liked to see is a powered and memory connected steering wheel and adjustable pedals. I have a very petite wife so this would be important for her.
    I’m looking forward to your review of the plug-in hybrid for three reasons, fuel economy, are the second seats more comfortable since they will not be stow-in-go and price. It may be possible that this will be the cheapest version (trim to trim) if you can take advantage of the tax credits.

    • @Wasabi9111
      @Wasabi9111 Před 7 lety +2

      Great review, Alex. You (and the press in general) are placing too much emphasis on the benefits of the stow n go seats. I rarely ever remove the 2nd row seats - maybe once a year if ever. I think that's the case w/ most owners. And b/c of the stow n go seats:
      1) the floor is higher so it's harder for the younger kids to climb in
      2) they don't slide to provide more legroom for the 3rd row
      3) you can't remove the headrests which compromises the positioning of the car seat installation
      Also, the headrests in the 3rd row are angled in an extremely uncomfortable position with no adjustment.
      I actually prefer the 2nd row seats in the current odyssey where you could widen the seats to easily accommodate 3 car seats. Also the 3rd row is much more comfortable. But sadly the current generation odyssey is too noisy and lacks autonomous braking.

    Thanks for the review even though we own a Pacifica Limited I still enjoy watching reviews. We have about 1,400 miles on ours so far and don't regret the change and after looking at everything on the market and even though from the point of dating we said no Minivan, The Pacifica met and or exceeded our needs and wants. There are a few things that are small I would like Chrysler to look at though.
    *Auto dimming mirrors extend it to the edge of the mirror or make the bezel bigger, it adds a halo effect and is distracting.
    *Parking assistance for parking stalls is scary and I still don't trust the vehicle enough as it seems to not get the angle correct and in testing the feature I have lost a parking stall (possible user error still learning about it.)
    *No latch system not available on both 3rd row outboard locations.
    *At times the voice commands don't work or not understood which gets frustrating, still haven't been able to figure out how to dictate a text message. there are also times where the voice command translated words inappropriately.
    *Newly found oddity we use the auto setting for headlights and I don't like that it switches to high beams I would like to have that be a setting I would choose myself.
    *2nd row headrests don't come off it took a bit to figure out how to make it work with a high car seat.
    *AWD would be nice the Sienna made the list but dropping something like 2-3 mpg wasn't worth it for us and the sienna is very much a minivan in the bad way.
    *Last one is just the skeptic in me I would like to be able to turn on and off the noise cancellation to hear the difference as this almost seems like a placebo effect.
    Still really enjoying it but now I'm looking for snow chains/cables as we want to take the boys to see snow this year.

    Most people will never know this but when u get the 8 seater with the center seat on the second row , you will lose the inner armrests on the 2 captain chairs . You have inner armrests only when u flip down on the center seat .
    Also something to consider is when you get the one with a built in vacuum , u will loose the spare tire , not good when ur always out of town driving long distance with the family .
    But there is hope , the space on the “stow N Go “ second row hole space will fit the factory inflatable spare . U just have to buy it at the parts counter , it comes complete with jack . Just FYI

    I drove a Sedona LX for 20 hours. It is pretty wallowy on the expressway. If it's the best then I would stay skip minivans and go with a sporty crossover like the XC90, Q7, Mazda CX9, etc. Go used if you have to, but your family's safety relies on tight handling and braking.

    We've had our 2017 Pacifica Limited for 3 months that replaced our 2013 T&C Limited as our company van. We've put about 4500 miles on it already and we continue to be impressed with it. The van shows why Chrysler remains the king of innovation in this class and has been since the '80s. Honda's polarized styling, Toyota's older tech and refinement, and Kia's compromised packaging and inefficiency does not show in the Chrysler.
    I know the true 800lbs gorilla for the Chrysler remains; Reliability: After 96k trouble free miles in the old but venerable T&C, and thoroughly enjoying the night & day feel of the Pacifica, I say the initial feel is impeccable. I own a 2014 JGC Summit Eco, 2014 Ram 3500 CTD, and a 2015 Challenger Hellcat and I have yet to experience the horrid reliability that many say that Chrysler has. They've had since 2008 to make the Pacifica a great van, and it shows. I was hesitant on getting a 9HP48-equipped Chrysler, but after renting several 2016 Cherokee's and 200s and now owning a Pacifica, they've come quite a ways from the disastrous tuning of those 2014 m/y cars.

    Hi Alex, Due to your excellent detailed review, I decided to take a serious look at buying a Pacifica. I've been out of touch with the automotive world for at least 10 years and was very surprised to find that the Pacifica does NOT come with a spare tire. The various window stickers I saw had "Tire Inflator Kit (No Compact Spare) listed. Is this a new trend and what do you think of it? A spare tire of any kind doesn't appear to be available as an option either (have yet to talk to a dealer).

    Hi Alex. I just recently checked out both the Pacifica (non-hybrid) and the Odyssey (2017). I noticed that the step-in height of the Pacifica is taller by at least 1 to 2 inches. This also made the Pacifica feel smaller vertically inside than the Odyssey (I'm 6'1"), when sitting in the 2nd row. For a family that's looking for more space in a vehicle, this may be important, and may be something you'd want to address in your reviews. Also, for some reason I felt that the leg room was more generous in the Odyssey.
    When you review the 2018 Honda Odyssey, could you please compare the step-in height, leg room, overall spaciousness to other vehicles? Thanks, and as always, your reviews are the best!

    • @CaptainDawg02
      @CaptainDawg02 Před 7 lety

      Jimmy Ho he has posted the '18 now. He doesn't address the interior vertical height, but I can...
      It's taller in the Odyssey because they don't have the pointless gimmick stow-n-go. This provides real seats with removable headrests for easier car seat installs as well as more comfortable height for adults in the second and third row. Just an all around better minivan.

    • @charlesmarshall2697
      @charlesmarshall2697 Před 7 lety +2

      You idiot! Sto-N-Go is what lured me away from my Honda van and into the Chrysler. Way more versatile and also found out that the Chrysler was far superior for towing. The biggest surprise was better reliability than I had with the Honda.

    • @CaptainDawg02
      @CaptainDawg02 Před 7 lety

      Wait, I am the idiot, yet I didn't purchase a Chrysler? Ok...
      Stow-n-go is a gimmick, plain and simple. You sacrifice safer seats, removable headrests (I assume you have never installed a car seat), & vertical height in the second row for a seat that can collapse in the floor on the rare occasion you ever need it. Plus, the Odyssey seats 8. Winner = Honda
      Also, a few hundred pounds of more "posted" towing capacity is not remotely a win (3.6K vs 3K). No one should tow more than 1.5-2K in a minivan, unless you like to replace your brakes and transmission regularly (which they both share the same ZF9 transmission in their lower trim models...Honda gets the boost with the much better 10 speed in the higher trims). Use your head for something other than a hat rack...

    Crossovers are just "posers". As you said, when it comes to practicality minivans are the way to go, although I would call them "vans," since they are full size vehicles. The term minivan was just an American term for the MPV, and the only ones left here are the Honda Fit and Kia Soul. Remember the 1st gen Caravan and Odyssey were about the size of modern hatchbacks.

      Again AWD is not really needed, unless you need to move out in difficult situations. AWD does not improve turning, and it doesn't improve on stopping distance. This is coming from a guy who owns an Impreza and watched some videos that directly slapped my face to reality.

    • @mountainhobo

      "AWD does not improve turning, and it doesn't improve on stopping distance." -- I don't think anyone was suggesting that.
      "unless you need to move out in difficult situations" -- That would be the general idea.
      BTW, AWD in some cars also helps to reduce torque steer.
