I'm just impressed that they paid enough attention to not only have her flare and go defensive, she actually did it correctly by hitting the deck so the missiles had to use more energy to maneuver in the thicker atmosphere. Elastigirl definitely knows how to fly a fighter.

I like how the fact that she’s using military terminology is also a subtle explanation as to why she’s so good at evasive maneuvers, it’s not just “she’s a superhero, of course she’s good at escaping and stuff”.

Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl were practically elite level, A-List superheroes in their universe; the same way you have real life "GOATs" like Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Elvis Presley, Tom Hanks, Leonardo Dicaprio, Eminem, Superman, Ironman; you know what I mean? The well known names that make you say "Oh, they're in everyone's top 5 list for sure", that was basically Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl in their world. The part that I love is that the movie actually shows you how an ex "A-List" professional hero actually operates in the field. For one thing, we get to see Elastigirl's military training on display here, but when she's actually infiltrating the island there's this moment where she readies herself to grab onto a passing monorail car by whispering "okay, okay", and suddenly she springs into action and she's no longer some middle-aged mother of two; she's locked in and back in "government agent" mode; and she looks like she knows exactly what she's doing cause this is all past experience for her. She even knows how to find Bob by looking for the room using the most energy levels, which normal people wouldn't really think about. And then you have Bob, who runs around the island, knocks out a guard with a well thrown rock, finds Syndrome's password, discovers his plan, and hides behind the bones of another super (Syndrome is still geeking out about it!). When they're both doing their "thing", you can see why they were one of the two best professionals in their line of work. Even after years of retirement and parenthood, they can immediately lock back in and go full "operative" mode when they really need to.
@@MasterOfTruck Funny thing is, it makes complete sense that Helen would have worked in the air force. An elastic body like hers would be virtually immune to the effects of G-Force, she would be the best damn test pilot in the world.
Fun Fact: The callsign "India Golf niner niner" ,IG99, is actually a reference to one of Brad Bird's (the director of The Incredibles) earliest movies, The Iron Giant. Which came out in 1999. IG99.
The terror in Bob's voice when he hears that "there are children aboard" Helen's plane is absolutely haunting. Bravo to the VAs, one of the best animated films honestly.
Think this will always be my favorite Pixar movie. Not just because it’s a family of super heroes but that it has so many layers to it leaving more for you to find with each viewing and it takes things so seriously like this scene and Helen giving Violet and Dash her talk about how if they are found they will kill them if given a chance, that hero work is not fun and games, it is serious and can have deadly consequences. The movie does a very good job of toeing the line with fun and serious and doesn’t dumb itself down at all.
Fun fact: Holly Hunter (Helen's VA) insisted on learning aviation terminologies and jargon. It definitely elevated the scene because of the nuances that she was military.
Another fun fact: There's an alternate take of the scene where it wasn't Helen flying the plane, but the friend she called to get the plane, Snug. He... was going to be KIA by the explosion.
The part that gets me is that she’s a literal superhero and she’s faced with complete helplessness and desperation to save her children. It’s so well acted that, being a parent myself it makes me well up every single time.
Oh yeah this film hits different after you have kids. Now that I have a wife and kids, the despair and cold rage Mr. Incredible feels later totally makes sense
Then followed with that one chick showing genuine fear and concern for the concept of killing kids aboard a plane just to make a point, and Mr. Incredible understanding that if this is his wife and there are kids aboard then she probably has their kids with her...
As a kid I never realised just how evil this is. Syndrome _knowingly_ tried to murder two _children_ to satisfy his own ego. And as far as he is aware at the end of this scene, he has just murdered two children and he's completely fine with it. Truly one of the most wicked Pixar villains.
And to make it worse was that the only read why he shot down Helen's plane knowing that there were kids on board was to get back at Bob for rejecting him as a sidekick when he was a kid how evil and petty do have to be to kill a man's wife and kids (while Bob was forced to listen and was powerless to save his family) just because he told you no
This scene is heart wrenching. The casual carefree initial contact, the confusion when they don’t respond, then the pure fear and panic as she tries to survive. The fact she messes up a couple transmissions adds to that feeling of fear and panic. Being correct is probably not a priority. She’s more focused on her children.
Imagine the NTSB recovering the black boxes. (Which probably didn’t exist in the modern sense or at all when this was set.) All you hear is the plane stressing out during the maneuvers and the pilot desperately trying to keep everyone on board alive.
@@robloxhood101 Considering how she was throwing the plane around, you'd be hearing that thing creaking and groaning as it's frame is pushed to the limits, and likely the two children in the back screaming as well. The haunting end is the cherry on top of that godawful pie
And think about how horrific it was for Bob to have to listen to his wife and his kid's final moments (as far as he knew) and especially when he heard Helen's voice be brutally cutoff after hearing her screaming for the missles to be called off and because Bob wasn't aware that Helen's suit was virtually indestructible he knew that Helen and the kids were gone and he wouldn't find out that they survived until the next morning Bob spent an entire night grieving for his family- no wonder he tried to kill Mirage a second time when she released him
Helen's use of radio protocol while flying is exceptionally accurate for a movie. In the director's commentary Brad Bird tells that Holly Hunter insisted on learning the lingo and its meaning. The terminology used hints that Elastigirl has had military flight training. "VFR on top" means she is flying in the regime of Visual Flight Rules 'on top' of a cloud cover. She requests "vectors to the initial", directions how to get to the initial landing approach. "Angels 10" is her altitude call, ten thousand feet. This is a military term. Civilian flights use the term "flight level". "Track east" is her direction of travel. "Buddy spike(d)" is a U.S. military brevity code meaning "friendly anti-aircraft radar has locked on to me, (please don't shoot)". "Transmitting in the Blind Guard" is a call on the emergency frequency where two-way communication has not been established. "Abort" is also a military brevity code, a directive meaning "stop the action/mission/attack"
That would explain why syndrome asks why a government plane is requesting permission to land. He knows that a civilian airliner wouldn't be using that kind of terminology. Never thought about that!
One of the best animated scenes, period. What's interesting is that she correctly says "abort" three times at the end, which means the writers probably intentionally made her mess up the abort and Mayday signals earlier to convey her stress and desperation. And I really like that detail

In an emergency situation... 1) the first time you say a command, listeners might be unsure whether or not you said anything (due to other noise, business, distractions) 2) the second time you say a command, listeners have heard it, but maybe haven't processed it/ may be worrying if they misheard it (again, see above) 3) the third time you say a command, the listeners have heard it, have processed it, and know they NEED to act on it. That's why soldiers being unloaded from a vehicle are told to "GO, GO, GO!" or "MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!" Stress and chaos can drown out even clear commands. It's why some warnings around explosives are repeated three times prior to detonation as well. Saying the command three times ensures clarity and urgency are both understood.

This was the tipping point of the movie for me. A lot of people say the darkest part of the movie is when Mr. Incredible scrolls through the datafiles and it's showing all the dead Supers, but in my opinion, _this_ is the point of no return for Syndrome. The Supers were, well, Supers; adults capable of defending themselves and in a chosen profession where danger and the loss of life was a very real possibility. The circumstances of their deaths were awful, yes, but at the end of the day being a Super was their choice. But this? This was a man being forced to listen to his wife and children die. There is nothing more evil than that. The datafiles scene showed how far Syndrome had gone. This scene showed how much farther he was willing to go. This was the point in the movie when I thought to myself "I know this is a children's movie. But Syndrome needs to die."
Also keep in mind Bob didn't know that Jack Jack wasn't on the plane so as far as he knew he thought Helen and All three of kids were on the plane when he thought that they were killed nor did he know that Edna had made matching suits for Helen and the kids and that Helen's suit was virtually indestructible so when the missiles had hit the plane he had no reason to believe that his wife and kids had survived the attack

It's this kind of scene that makes this movie so much more adult than the sequel. The desperation, the tension, the helplessness, the loss... It's very difficult to replicate those feelings unless you pull a similar stunt like this but by then, it'll just seem tacky and repetitive.
2nd one should have been about Dash and Violet as grown-ups. Dash and Jack are superheroes full-time having fun and getting into trouble, while Vi is on more official desk-type work, maybe a super-related lawyer. Could have her and Dash bicker over some lawsuit he's in and how that reflects badly on the supers their parents worked so hard to bring back. And then Bob gets killed, and Violet murders the people responsible with extreme prejudice. Kids grow up. The sequel could've been dark as hell.

That sacrificial love, she doesn't know if she's gonna survive, indestructible suit or not her head is exposed, and she does get knocked unconscious momentarily and probably thought she had died until she heard her kids screaming.

It's convention to repeat Mayday three times, but convention like that goes out the window in an emergency - the priority is to get all necessary information across, and saying Mayday two times to enable that isn't a just "not a mistake", it's what you're taught to do. It could be different for civilian airliners, but when I was in the Navy we were told to get across the following, in this order (disclaimer: I was not a pilot, but as a radio operator on an aircraft carrier we received the same instruction in emergency protocols). - At least one mayday to identify this is an emergency call - Callsign and type of craft you're in - Pilot's intentions - Position and heading (preferably current, but last known position and heading if you don't know) - Altitude and FL - How much fuel you have (if plane will remain airborne long enough for it to matter, err on the side of it will if you don't know) Anything beyond that is entirely up to the radio operator to decide if they have time.

Man it's insane how well done this is on a writing level. Even the errors make sense--she's speaking quickly and more interested in conveying important info than repeating the warning "properly." Really incredible.
I like how she only said abort and mayday twice in that sequence. She's freaking out, no incoming comms to acknowledge her, no communication whatsoever, she's got her kids with her, she's in the middle of nowhere with no backup. With her military training, this is possibly the worst scenario for her, hence her not giving out proper commands towards the end. She gives those two proper rounds of abort, with a weakened voice, frantic but accepting what's about to happen, before diving for her kids. Completely forgetting about the supersuit, just instinctively showing herself on top of her kids thinking, "This is it." This is nightmare fuel for parents. Side note... I think Edna knew something was wrong from the get go, thats why she put that tracer on Bob, why she had those near indestructible suits for the Incredibles. Why she probably made syndromes cape..
I always found it so cool how Helen made the split second decision to potentially sacrifice her life at 1:17 to save Dash and Violet from the missile strike. Of course, she survived the explosion without a scratch, but there's no way she knew for sure that she would.
oh she absolutely thought that she was going to die, when we see her fall into the ocean she has her eyes closed its as if she thought that she was already dead and it wasn't until she heard her kids screaming that she realized she was still alive, its details like this that really make me appreciate this movie more!
Edna already told her her suit was indestructible, that plus her elasticity combined is the whole reason that she and the kids survived a direct missile strike hitting her simultaneously.

She created a ballon around her children and her suit made by Edna is already said to be indestructible against bullets and explosive which is why she survived
If anyone is curious, the plane she is flying is what appears to be an amalgamation of either 2 or 3 different Private Jets. I believe it is based off either a Dassault Falcon 20, a Dassault Falcon 50 Suzunna, and a Learjet Model 35. Though interestingly the designers for the movie decided to get creative and gave it a single internally mounted engine. Sort of like a fighter jet given how it also has dual air intakes. If anyone has a better idea of what this plane is based off, I'd like to know!
I definitely agree with the Dassault 50, since it was the first supersonic private jet (and is what Helen asked for- something fast), and matches the rough time period of the movie's setting ('60s, right?)
literally everything about this scene is perfection. The music, the voice acting, the research behind the terminology, the emotional turmoil, the cinematography, every shot, every angle. could not make it any better than this.
Except the continuity error where Mrs. Incredible suddenly changes from civilian clothes into her supersuit. But that's nitpicking that I never noticed until today. This scene has left a very positive indelible mark on my childhood.
@@samheard7849There was a scene cut from this clip where she had her suit in a bag next to her. When she didnt receive any response from the towers she put the plane on autopilot and changed just in case, came back after finding the kids and then chaos ensued
That last desperate act to save her kids still gives me chills, she probably wasn't sure if Eda's suit would actually protect her from the explosion but without hesitation still protected her kids for their chance at survival.

Chaff and flares are two different things. Flares burn hot to confuse a missile's heat-seeking equipment, while chaff bursts into a metallic cloud to add false targets to a missile's radar.
The original version would’ve been much more horrific! Why? Because the pilot that Helen (Aka Elastigirl) borrowed the plane from (in the finalized cut) is actually featured in the original storyboard first draft. His name is Snug Porter, and he was Helen’s old pilot back in the glory days of superheroes. Remember not all superhero have the power to fly. He was a pilot assigned to help transport “Supers” who couldn’t fly, including Elastigirl. He is also one of her best friends. The original cut would’ve been worse because it would’ve been him who was flying the plane instead of Helen. In that cut of the “Missile Lock” scene, everything would play out as it did in the movie when Syndrome attacks the plane with Locked Missiles, but instead Snug would be struggling to avoid the missiles, while Helen protected Dash and Violet in the back. Eventually, like in the Final Cut, the missiles would eventually hit the aircraft. But instead of all of them surviving like in the movie, in the Original cut, Helen only had enough time to save the kids, while Snug was *KILLED* in the explosion. Dark, huh? Not to mention he was a really funny and sweet side character in the original cut. At least he’s alive in the finalized cut (though he’s only mentioned offscreen). Brad Bird said that he wanted the original scene to show how dangerous Syndrome was as a villain, and that would he would take out even innocent friends of any super who got in his way. Bird also said, although he had his doubts about cutting Snug out of the movie, in the end, he said it was for the best because it made the same more intense with Helen, having to control both the plane and protecting the kids, and the audience won’t have enough time to develop more sympathy for Snug. He was told by Pixar, “If you’re going to kill off a character midway through a movie, you can’t just introduce them in the scene before. The audience won’t feel too much.”

Not only do I agree with not killing off a character right after introducing them, but I also love how it shows us that Helen isn't just a caring mother. When push comes to shove, she's a brilliant quick thinker and has much more in her skillset than her stretching powers.
Me too, the voice acting and airplane jargon from Helen . The action, plus the perfect music in the background ties it all together, this scene was expertly made , one of the best if not the best in the entire movie , a perfect 10/10 for me .

They already did a great job making him a douche, I think this was the right move putting more love into Helen
One small thing missed: when she mentions “transmitting in the blind” if I’m not mistaken she says “Guard”, as in she’s transmitting on 121.5 because even if she got the wrong frequency for the tower they should be monitoring the emergency frequency
Fun Fact: When she says "Maday, mayday, India Gulf Niner Niner is buddy-spiked" she's saying she's under friendly fire as buddy-spiked is the Air Force equivalent of fratricide/friendly fire.
"buddy spike" means there's a friendly radar lock on yourself, it's more like your friend aiming at you and you telling them to cut that shit out. Given, the radar signature in the movie is probably coming from a ground radar as part of a SAM site, or from the missiles themselves (some Air to Air missiles like the AIM-120 have integrated radar to guide them when they get close enough to their target) it was a "friendly fire incident" from the start (said in quotes since although Elastigirl thought they were friendly, the missiles were from a hostile aggressor) Basically Buddy Spike is you saying "hey stop pointing that thing at me", only once shots have been fired or missiles launched does it become a friendly fire incident and akin to fratricide as you said before
Everyone's impressed by Helen's use of actual pilot lingo here. I'm much more impressed by the way she literally avoids getting hit by missiles SEVERAL TIMES
I kinda like scenes where the hero shows tremendous skill... And still loses. End of evangelion is another great one. The pilot of the cyborg mech pulls of the craziest stuff we've seen in the entire franchise, is at her absolute apex... and still ultimately loses. Because her enemies basically had in universe hacks. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good you are. Sometimes fate just has other plans.
This scene scared me as a kid because my mom had been a flight engineer in the AF before my siblings and I were born. While my twin and I were around Dash’s age, the US went back to war with the Middle East, and the AF tried calling my mom back to rank (she’d retired an officer), but she was uninterested as she’d settled/started her family. When my family watched this movie together, she loved the lingo, but was almost haunted by the ending of the scene. It going from a routine flight to sheer horror in a few seconds really affected her. Helen looking *incredibly* like her, did little to soothe my unease at my “badass” mom’s blatant fear she tried to hide.
As a Flight Instructor myself who has had to teach people to speak on the radio, both VFR and IFR, I was actually fairly impressed that the IFR radio calls were actually fairly decent. Though I will say her saying VFR on top right as she flies into a cloud(cloud clearance is still required with VFR on Top which is 1k over a cloud layer), saying “over”. Also some structural stuff as tower would not be giving you vectors to the inital, that would be approach/center’s job, even in a small island like this. “Blind guard” instead of guard, though that may help military speak. It’s also interesting that she goes into military phraseology. It actually adds a bit of hidden lore, probably some fighter pilot stuff in her past.
I had to pause the video when she said VFR on top for the exact same reason lmao I was like girl are we looking out the same windscreen?? Are we using the same VFR weather minimums???
I was just thinking today about how cool it is that in spite of their powers, Bob and Helen still used vehicles. Dope ass superhero/spy movie. Makes me wanna rewatch soon.
@@Stigums To be fair, they are both able to move superhumanely fast with those powers but not as fast as a vehicle of course In case i need to explain, mr incredible can both run super fast (almost outruns the omnidroid rolling downhill while fat) and jump extremely far, i would say his powers are more like super physicality in all aspects not only strength, super strength, speed, toughness, perception, hand eye coordination too (accuracy when throwing things is super human) elastigirl can slingshot herself
I know everyone's talked about the little details here and there but the one detail I like is the fact that she falls unconscious after they manage to escape from the explosion, I mean a lot of times in movies and tv when someone who's not superman-like escapes an explosion they are just fully awake when really the sheer stress of knowing you'll be in an explosion (let alone knowing your children will be caught in it) would probably take you out And yeah the kids are fully awake because they were protected by their mom's body-shield
Holy crap, the emotion as we watch Bob hear his wife over the comms not only begging for her life but screaming that his entire family is also on the plane and in danger. That “NO!!!” that he shouts after he hears the children aboard made me cry last time I watched this movie.
I forgot how hard this scene hits. Actually has me in tears rn. The stress, the rising panic, the desperate attempts to reach the humanity of the person with the trigger… and the tragedy for Bob, who hears it all but can do nothing.
It was literally hard to not get chills watching this now. This scene hit me so hard when I was a kid. The lingo definitely had something to do with it, super interesting to hear that it was Helen's VA that insisted on having it that way.
I remmeber seeing a storyboard showing an alternate scene where she had her friend onboard as a copilot, and he perished in the destruction. I'd imagine that would have made the movie even more hard hitting.
Yeah but in the end they decided against it because they would need to introduce him and make us feel a connection before killing him off. (for extra effect)
Definetly good for the animation, but in reality they should already be traveling above the speed of sound. Most SAM systems travel at speeds between Mach 1.5 to Mach 3 depending on the propellant.
Tbh the missiles in this scene aren’t accurate just meant to look cool, actual missiles have very low burn times and loft themselves on parabolic trajectories at long ranges to stay in thin air and conserve energy while coasting, a missile also doesn’t turn around and come back after it’s missed, but it makes for a tense scene. Real missiles are scary as fuck without a radar warning reciever though, go watch DCS videos to get an idea of what it might look like.
@@wick9427 In the 1950s/60s, sure, missiles didn't have nearly as good of maneuverability/tracking, but modern day air to air or surface to air missiles may surprise you with how many secondary maneuvers they can make.

Yes, that’s right, it is an Easter egg. Syndrome aka Buddy is (supposedly) buddy-spiking Helen’s aircraft, though the viewer knows that Syndrome is not a friendly. Buddy-spiking is when friendlies lock on to your aircraft with their missiles, and as far as Helen knows, tower is friendly.
Completely coincidental language as being "buddy spiked" is official military lingo for being locked on to, and potentially fired at, by friendly anti-aircraft missiles.
I think it did. Also, you labeled them as flare bursts, but the button says chaff. Chaff works on radar-based missiles, and flares are only for heat seekers.
@@connorsullivan5938 Child soldiers are legally considered soldiers, not children - as far as the enemy combatants are concerned at least. If Syndrome was the good guy here, it would be Helen who would be responsible for forcing him to attack Violet and Dashiel, not his fault for doing it.
This scene is probably my favorite in the movie. The fact that they used actual terminology for piloting, had accurate representation of G-force, and even had Hellen preforming maneuvers the avoid the missiles just makes this scene so much more real. The Incredibles really has no match when it comes to details like this.
One interesting fact I never took into account when I watched this movie as a kid: her powers of elasticity means her body can absorb a lot more shock than a normal person can. That was a huge explosion that could have certainly killed them; instead whatever impact the suit couldn’t get her body absorbed the rest, which only knocked her unconscious for a few seconds while her children were completely unaffected by it. This makes Edna’s decision to make Helen’s suit “virtually indestructible” so much more than a plot device. It means she truly took the time to understand every Super’s power and bring out the best of it in their super suit. A Super may (or may not) understand their physical limitations, but with these suits Edna can push those boundaries even further.
The scene's realistic dialogue may be a vestige that there was originally a pilot, a friend of Helen's who was flying the plane. He can be heard over the phone when Helen calls for a jet. His original purpose was to be killed in this exchange so we know the villains here are serious, this is a serious movie where people can die. I don't remember the reason why they cut him.

Also, alot of characters are remembered even when they appear for few minutes by simply being badass which a pilot could have done here (Delay the plane's destruction as much as possible while the three souls on board plan a way get out)
My memory of the director's commentary is that John Lasseter saw the scenes and asked, "Wouldn't it be better if Helen herself was flying the plane?" Brad Bird initially said "No, someone has to pay the price; we have to establish threat and stakes" ...But then he thought about it, they tried it with Helen, and everyone including him felt it worked better so they changed it.
The cut pilot's name was Snug, by the way. He still appears in the final version of the film, but he was relegated to the person who lends Helen the jet that was used in this scene and can only be heard on the phone.
A great addition to this scene on top of what everyone else has said is the fact that Syndrome says "a government plane is requesting permission to land here" in the dialogue before this. Helen is using military lingo for her transmissions, so of course Syndrome assumes it's a government plane, not a civilian aircraft, even though it's just Helen piloting it.
"Repeat" is a brevity code used to signal an artillery unit to, well, repeat its last fire mission. As the action starts Helen, along with almost every movie ever made, uses this code incorrectly to preface saying a message twice; the proper phrase is "say again." What's interesting is that she actually uses the correct protocol near the end of the scene, when she's under much more pressure. "There are children aboard; say again, there are children aboard!" I wonder if this is an intentional portrayal of old training kicking in as the pressure mounts, or if the writers simply thought those phrases were interchangeable.
It is not just the fact that she’s desperate. It’s not just the fact that this is insanely well animated. It’s the fear. She’s terrified for her herself and her kids. Mirage is horrified that this is happening and Bob can only imagine what’s going on, scared he’s going to lose his family any second. Violet and Dash’s actors sell genuine screams of terror as they fall. As a child, I had no idea what she was saying; I didn’t even connect how dangerous the missiles were. I was still scared to bits because I gleaned it off of everyone else. I was able to recognize later that something that should not have happened almost happened. And the insane bit? Up until now, Helen thought she was going to get Bob because he had been unfaithful. Maybe she thought something else was going on, because his super suit gave off the signal, but it wasn’t until they sent FIVE missiles at her that she concluded this was bigger. And that her kids were aboard.
Goes to show just how much of a right bastard Syndrome was. He seemed like a cartoonish villain until this moment. This scene and the one immediately following the explosion shows how truly deranged he’s gotten.
the incredibles (first movie) has to be one of the most serious animated disney/pixar films to ever been made in recent times. the way the film talks about life such as family, relationships, stress, shit even the fear of infidelity. it’s such a great film and one of my favorites til this day.
not to mention the ridiculous amount of death Modern Disney movies wouldn't hurt a fly, this one had armed guards shooting at women and children. Also all the dead supers, showing the skeleton of Gazerbeam, this movie was DARK.
This is really about a smarts. Helen/Elastigirl knows missile impact is already intacted and a way she and her kids can survive this is that her suit is missile and explosion proof as she bundled all of them up upon impact, and through free fall, the suit is elastic like her name as it even transforms into a parachute. And this proves Elastigirl is really not just strong but very smart on any crossroad.
Most of the early dialogue is pretty standard for even civilian pilots, but then you start adding in things like "Angels 10" and "Buddy spike" and it adds a new depth of character to that whole scene and to Helen as a whole. I can see this audio giving a few figure pilots flashbacks, it certainly gave me chills. Stroke 3 was definitely defending six there. IYKYK.
Fun fact: she's also using the "hey you, it's me" radio format. Using radios is wayyy less confusing when you identify the person you're calling first.
0:49 she says "Friendly, 20 miles south-southwest" - she's transmitting in the assumption someone's made a horrible mistake and they didn't mean to shoot at her. Then the next call is Mayday - she's given up trying to reason with the attacker and is hoping someone else can intervene / send rescue. "Abort Abort Abort" is I think just panic - she can't think what else to do Seriously this is one of the most emotionally impactful scenes for me in any film I've seen
I can't put into words how upset it makes me that modern Disney/Pixar no longer take risks or approach serious topics like this anymore. Watch Incredibles 2 and there is no scene in it that holds a candle to this one. Or the moment when Bob learns that the majority of his friends and allies from the Glory Days were systematically killed. Or when he threatens to crush Mirage like a toothpick after he thinks his family is dead. Even early in the movie when Helen and Bob are arguing after he comes home from knocking down the building engulfed in flames has more weight to it than anything in the sequel. They literally don't tell stories the way they used to and it sucks.
The consultant they used is definitely ex military. A commercial pilot probably wouldn't know the "angels" designation nor the term "buddy spiked". Maybe the implication is Helen is retired Air Force or trained with them.
That is the implication. She has elasticity powers so she would be great for testing aircraft. And then it comes full circle in this scene. Showing that she is an experienced and competent Super, despite her wish to only be a family woman.
This movie went into way more detail than it needed to multiple times over for everything from insurance claims to military flight jargon and I love it for that.
One of the many reasons the Incredibles is still one of the best superhero movies of all time. The superpowers are secondary to their actual skills as heroes.
As a CAP radio operator, I commend Helen and the VA for actually taking the time to learn about proper radio communications/protocols. And using “over” and “out” properly and not using “over and out” I’ve seen some shows/games (I’m looking at you Halo and your confusing logic for pro-word usages) where it’s only “over and out” and never spaced out using those two pro-words correctly. I honestly didn’t need the translation (with the exception of the military terminology) to understand what Helen is trying to convey. And have to commend Helen’s VA to her dedication to learning the FAA Phonetic Alphabet.
I actually kind of love how she gets everything right under pressure but slowly starts to mess up as the missles get closer it makes it feel more desperate like shes so scared that even though shes said everything perfectly up to this point shes too worried to actually focus anymore

I watched this movie as a kid and I distinctly remember this scene. This is the 1st time I have re-watched it after becoming a pilot (about 15 years later) and I am blown away at the realism and military radio comms! Must have had a military aviator help out big time for this! They definitely do NOT put this much effort into movies and TV shows anymore and it really shows. I wish they did this still.
This is easily one of the best animated movies ever. The change to a less "family friendly" and more realistic look into how this would go is really cool
I'm just impressed that they paid enough attention to not only have her flare and go defensive, she actually did it correctly by hitting the deck so the missiles had to use more energy to maneuver in the thicker atmosphere. Elastigirl definitely knows how to fly a fighter.

Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl were practically elite level, A-List superheroes in their universe; the same way you have real life "GOATs" like Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Elvis Presley, Tom Hanks, Leonardo Dicaprio, Eminem, Superman, Ironman; you know what I mean? The well known names that make you say "Oh, they're in everyone's top 5 list for sure", that was basically Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl in their world.
The part that I love is that the movie actually shows you how an ex "A-List" professional hero actually operates in the field. For one thing, we get to see Elastigirl's military training on display here, but when she's actually infiltrating the island there's this moment where she readies herself to grab onto a passing monorail car by whispering "okay, okay", and suddenly she springs into action and she's no longer some middle-aged mother of two; she's locked in and back in "government agent" mode; and she looks like she knows exactly what she's doing cause this is all past experience for her. She even knows how to find Bob by looking for the room using the most energy levels, which normal people wouldn't really think about.
And then you have Bob, who runs around the island, knocks out a guard with a well thrown rock, finds Syndrome's password, discovers his plan, and hides behind the bones of another super (Syndrome is still geeking out about it!).
When they're both doing their "thing", you can see why they were one of the two best professionals in their line of work. Even after years of retirement and parenthood, they can immediately lock back in and go full "operative" mode when they really need to.

The terror in Bob's voice when he hears that "there are children aboard" Helen's plane is absolutely haunting. Bravo to the VAs, one of the best animated films honestly.
Think this will always be my favorite Pixar movie. Not just because it’s a family of super heroes but that it has so many layers to it leaving more for you to find with each viewing and it takes things so seriously like this scene and Helen giving Violet and Dash her talk about how if they are found they will kill them if given a chance, that hero work is not fun and games, it is serious and can have deadly consequences. The movie does a very good job of toeing the line with fun and serious and doesn’t dumb itself down at all.
Fun fact: Holly Hunter (Helen's VA) insisted on learning aviation terminologies and jargon. It definitely elevated the scene because of the nuances that she was military.

The part that gets me is that she’s a literal superhero and she’s faced with complete helplessness and desperation to save her children. It’s so well acted that, being a parent myself it makes me well up every single time.

As a kid I never realised just how evil this is. Syndrome _knowingly_ tried to murder two _children_ to satisfy his own ego. And as far as he is aware at the end of this scene, he has just murdered two children and he's completely fine with it. Truly one of the most wicked Pixar villains.

This scene is heart wrenching. The casual carefree initial contact, the confusion when they don’t respond, then the pure fear and panic as she tries to survive.
The fact she messes up a couple transmissions adds to that feeling of fear and panic. Being correct is probably not a priority. She’s more focused on her children.
Imagine the NTSB recovering the black boxes.

And think about how horrific it was for Bob to have to listen to his wife and his kid's final moments (as far as he knew) and especially when he heard Helen's voice be brutally cutoff after hearing her screaming for the missles to be called off and because Bob wasn't aware that Helen's suit was virtually indestructible he knew that Helen and the kids were gone and he wouldn't find out that they survived until the next morning Bob spent an entire night grieving for his family- no wonder he tried to kill Mirage a second time when she released him

Helen's use of radio protocol while flying is exceptionally accurate for a movie. In the director's commentary Brad Bird tells that Holly Hunter insisted on learning the lingo and its meaning. The terminology used hints that Elastigirl has had military flight training.
"VFR on top" means she is flying in the regime of Visual Flight Rules 'on top' of a cloud cover.
She requests "vectors to the initial", directions how to get to the initial landing approach.
"Angels 10" is her altitude call, ten thousand feet. This is a military term. Civilian flights use the term "flight level".
"Track east" is her direction of travel.
"Buddy spike(d)" is a U.S. military brevity code meaning "friendly anti-aircraft radar has locked on to me, (please don't shoot)".
"Transmitting in the Blind Guard" is a call on the emergency frequency where two-way communication has not been established.
"Abort" is also a military brevity code, a directive meaning "stop the action/mission/attack"
That would explain why syndrome asks why a government plane is requesting permission to land. He knows that a civilian airliner wouldn't be using that kind of terminology. Never thought about that!

Fairly certain only saying it two times doesn’t mean anything specific, but saying a command three times typically means it’s an emergency, and the action has to be done now.
@@armydillo1013 So, the reason why it has to be said three times is for safety reasons. In an emergency situation...
1) the first time you say a command, listeners might be unsure whether or not you said anything (due to other noise, business, distractions)
2) the second time you say a command, listeners have heard it, but maybe haven't processed it/ may be worrying if they misheard it (again, see above)
3) the third time you say a command, the listeners have heard it, have processed it, and know they NEED to act on it.
That's why soldiers being unloaded from a vehicle are told to "GO, GO, GO!" or "MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!"
Stress and chaos can drown out even clear commands. It's why some warnings around explosives are repeated three times prior to detonation as well.
Saying the command three times ensures clarity and urgency are both understood.

This was the tipping point of the movie for me. A lot of people say the darkest part of the movie is when Mr. Incredible scrolls through the datafiles and it's showing all the dead Supers, but in my opinion, _this_ is the point of no return for Syndrome. The Supers were, well, Supers; adults capable of defending themselves and in a chosen profession where danger and the loss of life was a very real possibility. The circumstances of their deaths were awful, yes, but at the end of the day being a Super was their choice.
But this? This was a man being forced to listen to his wife and children die. There is nothing more evil than that. The datafiles scene showed how far Syndrome had gone. This scene showed how much farther he was willing to go.
This was the point in the movie when I thought to myself "I know this is a children's movie. But Syndrome needs to die."
Rather fitting I think that a combination of his egoism (the cape, fanfare of heroics) and a jet are his demise

It's this kind of scene that makes this movie so much more adult than the sequel. The desperation, the tension, the helplessness, the loss... It's very difficult to replicate those feelings unless you pull a similar stunt like this but by then, it'll just seem tacky and repetitive.
2nd one should have been about Dash and Violet as grown-ups.
Dash and Jack are superheroes full-time having fun and getting into trouble, while Vi is on more official desk-type work, maybe a super-related lawyer. Could have her and Dash bicker over some lawsuit he's in and how that reflects badly on the supers their parents worked so hard to bring back.
And then Bob gets killed, and Violet murders the people responsible with extreme prejudice.
Kids grow up. The sequel could've been dark as hell.

It's convention to repeat Mayday three times, but convention like that goes out the window in an emergency - the priority is to get all necessary information across, and saying Mayday two times to enable that isn't a just "not a mistake", it's what you're taught to do.
It could be different for civilian airliners, but when I was in the Navy we were told to get across the following, in this order (disclaimer: I was not a pilot, but as a radio operator on an aircraft carrier we received the same instruction in emergency protocols).
- At least one mayday to identify this is an emergency call
- Callsign and type of craft you're in
- Pilot's intentions
- Position and heading (preferably current, but last known position and heading if you don't know)
- Altitude and FL
- How much fuel you have (if plane will remain airborne long enough for it to matter, err on the side of it will if you don't know)
Anything beyond that is entirely up to the radio operator to decide if they have time.

Man it's insane how well done this is on a writing level. Even the errors make sense--she's speaking quickly and more interested in conveying important info than repeating the warning "properly." Really incredible.
I like how she only said abort and mayday twice in that sequence. She's freaking out, no incoming comms to acknowledge her, no communication whatsoever, she's got her kids with her, she's in the middle of nowhere with no backup. With her military training, this is possibly the worst scenario for her, hence her not giving out proper commands towards the end. She gives those two proper rounds of abort, with a weakened voice, frantic but accepting what's about to happen, before diving for her kids. Completely forgetting about the supersuit, just instinctively showing herself on top of her kids thinking, "This is it." This is nightmare fuel for parents.
Side note... I think Edna knew something was wrong from the get go, thats why she put that tracer on Bob, why she had those near indestructible suits for the Incredibles. Why she probably made syndromes cape..
I always found it so cool how Helen made the split second decision to potentially sacrifice her life at 1:17 to save Dash and Violet from the missile strike. Of course, she survived the explosion without a scratch, but there's no way she knew for sure that she would.

It was a clear signal that she knew that she was out of luck and completely helpless to stop her plane from getting shot down.
If anyone is curious, the plane she is flying is what appears to be an amalgamation of either 2 or 3 different Private Jets. I believe it is based off either a Dassault Falcon 20, a Dassault Falcon 50 Suzunna, and a Learjet Model 35.
Though interestingly the designers for the movie decided to get creative and gave it a single internally mounted engine. Sort of like a fighter jet given how it also has dual air intakes.

literally everything about this scene is perfection. The music, the voice acting, the research behind the terminology, the emotional turmoil, the cinematography, every shot, every angle. could not make it any better than this.
Except the continuity error where Mrs. Incredible suddenly changes from civilian clothes into her supersuit. But that's nitpicking that I never noticed until today. This scene has left a very positive indelible mark on my childhood.

That last desperate act to save her kids still gives me chills, she probably wasn't sure if Eda's suit would actually protect her from the explosion but without hesitation still protected her kids for their chance at survival.

Chaff and flares are two different things. Flares burn hot to confuse a missile's heat-seeking equipment, while chaff bursts into a metallic cloud to add false targets to a missile's radar.
Both works fine in the Modern Day

This scene gives me chills EVERY time it's so well made
The original version would’ve been much more horrific! Why? Because the pilot that Helen (Aka Elastigirl) borrowed the plane from (in the finalized cut) is actually featured in the original storyboard first draft. His name is Snug Porter, and he was Helen’s old pilot back in the glory days of superheroes. Remember not all superhero have the power to fly. He was a pilot assigned to help transport “Supers” who couldn’t fly, including Elastigirl. He is also one of her best friends. The original cut would’ve been worse because it would’ve been him who was flying the plane instead of Helen. In that cut of the “Missile Lock” scene, everything would play out as it did in the movie when Syndrome attacks the plane with Locked Missiles, but instead Snug would be struggling to avoid the missiles, while Helen protected Dash and Violet in the back. Eventually, like in the Final Cut, the missiles would eventually hit the aircraft. But instead of all of them surviving like in the movie, in the Original cut, Helen only had enough time to save the kids, while Snug was *KILLED* in the explosion. Dark, huh? Not to mention he was a really funny and sweet side character in the original cut. At least he’s alive in the finalized cut (though he’s only mentioned offscreen). Brad Bird said that he wanted the original scene to show how dangerous Syndrome was as a villain, and that would he would take out even innocent friends of any super who got in his way. Bird also said, although he had his doubts about cutting Snug out of the movie, in the end, he said it was for the best because it made the same more intense with Helen, having to control both the plane and protecting the kids, and the audience won’t have enough time to develop more sympathy for Snug. He was told by Pixar, “If you’re going to kill off a character midway through a movie, you can’t just introduce them in the scene before. The audience won’t feel too much.”

Not only do I agree with not killing off a character right after introducing them, but I also love how it shows us that Helen isn't just a caring mother. When push comes to shove, she's a brilliant quick thinker and has much more in her skillset than her stretching powers.
Me too, the voice acting and airplane jargon from Helen . The action, plus the perfect music in the background ties it all together, this scene was expertly made , one of the best if not the best in the entire movie , a perfect 10/10 for me .

One small thing missed: when she mentions “transmitting in the blind” if I’m not mistaken she says “Guard”, as in she’s transmitting on 121.5 because even if she got the wrong frequency for the tower they should be monitoring the emergency frequency

Fun Fact: When she says "Maday, mayday, India Gulf Niner Niner is buddy-spiked" she's saying she's under friendly fire as buddy-spiked is the Air Force equivalent of fratricide/friendly fire.
"buddy spike" means there's a friendly radar lock on yourself, it's more like your friend aiming at you and you telling them to cut that shit out. Given, the radar signature in the movie is probably coming from a ground radar as part of a SAM site, or from the missiles themselves (some Air to Air missiles like the AIM-120 have integrated radar to guide them when they get close enough to their target) it was a "friendly fire incident" from the start (said in quotes since although Elastigirl thought they were friendly, the missiles were from a hostile aggressor)
Basically Buddy Spike is you saying "hey stop pointing that thing at me", only once shots have been fired or missiles launched does it become a friendly fire incident and akin to fratricide as you said before

End of evangelion is another great one. The pilot of the cyborg mech pulls of the craziest stuff we've seen in the entire franchise, is at her absolute apex... and still ultimately loses. Because her enemies basically had in universe hacks.

This scene scared me as a kid because my mom had been a flight engineer in the AF before my siblings and I were born. While my twin and I were around Dash’s age, the US went back to war with the Middle East, and the AF tried calling my mom back to rank (she’d retired an officer), but she was uninterested as she’d settled/started her family. When my family watched this movie together, she loved the lingo, but was almost haunted by the ending of the scene. It going from a routine flight to sheer horror in a few seconds really affected her. Helen looking *incredibly* like her, did little to soothe my unease at my “badass” mom’s blatant fear she tried to hide.
That is such a "cool" detail that I'm sure added a lot of depth into how you saw the movie!

As a Flight Instructor myself who has had to teach people
to speak on the radio, both VFR and IFR, I was actually fairly impressed that the IFR radio calls were actually fairly decent.
Though I will say her saying VFR on top right as she flies into a cloud(cloud clearance is still required with VFR on Top which is 1k over a cloud layer), saying “over”. Also some structural stuff as tower would not be giving you vectors to the inital, that would be approach/center’s job, even in a small island like this. “Blind guard” instead of guard, though that may help military speak.
It’s also interesting that she goes into military phraseology. It actually adds a bit of hidden lore, probably some fighter pilot stuff in her past.
She does talk to an old friend of hers over the phone, the one that gave her the plane.
I had to pause the video when she said VFR on top for the exact same reason lmao I was like girl are we looking out the same windscreen?? Are we using the same VFR weather minimums???

I know everyone's talked about the little details here and there but the one detail I like is the fact that she falls unconscious after they manage to escape from the explosion, I mean a lot of times in movies and tv when someone who's not superman-like escapes an explosion they are just fully awake when really the sheer stress of knowing you'll be in an explosion (let alone knowing your children will be caught in it) would probably take you out

Holy crap, the emotion as we watch Bob hear his wife over the comms not only begging for her life but screaming that his entire family is also on the plane and in danger. That “NO!!!” that he shouts after he hears the children aboard made me cry last time I watched this movie.
I forgot how hard this scene hits. Actually has me in tears rn. The stress, the rising panic, the desperate attempts to reach the humanity of the person with the trigger… and the tragedy for Bob, who hears it all but can do nothing.
It was literally hard to not get chills watching this now. This scene hit me so hard when I was a kid. The lingo definitely had something to do with it, super interesting to hear that it was Helen's VA that insisted on having it that way.
I remmeber seeing a storyboard showing an alternate scene where she had her friend onboard as a copilot, and he perished in the destruction. I'd imagine that would have made the movie even more hard hitting.

Another nice little detail is the missiles going supersonic with the plane as they dive at 0:27.
Definetly good for the animation, but in reality they should already be traveling above the speed of sound. Most SAM systems travel at speeds between Mach 1.5 to Mach 3 depending on the propellant.
Tbh the missiles in this scene aren’t accurate just meant to look cool, actual missiles have very low burn times and loft themselves on parabolic trajectories at long ranges to stay in thin air and conserve energy while coasting, a missile also doesn’t turn around and come back after it’s missed, but it makes for a tense scene.
Real missiles are scary as fuck without a radar warning reciever though, go watch DCS videos to get an idea of what it might look like.

@@wick9427 In the 1950s/60s, sure, missiles didn't have nearly as good of maneuverability/tracking, but modern day air to air or surface to air missiles may surprise you with how many secondary maneuvers they can make.

Yes, that’s right, it is an Easter egg. Syndrome aka Buddy is (supposedly) buddy-spiking Helen’s aircraft, though the viewer knows that Syndrome is not a friendly. Buddy-spiking is when friendlies lock on to your aircraft with their missiles, and as far as Helen knows, tower is friendly.
Completely coincidental language as being "buddy spiked" is official military lingo for being locked on to, and potentially fired at, by friendly anti-aircraft missiles.

This scene is probably my favorite in the movie. The fact that they used actual terminology for piloting, had accurate representation of G-force, and even had Hellen preforming maneuvers the avoid the missiles just makes this scene so much more real. The Incredibles really has no match when it comes to details like this.

One interesting fact I never took into account when I watched this movie as a kid: her powers of elasticity means her body can absorb a lot more shock than a normal person can.
That was a huge explosion that could have certainly killed them; instead whatever impact the suit couldn’t get her body absorbed the rest, which only knocked her unconscious for a few seconds while her children were completely unaffected by it.
This makes Edna’s decision to make Helen’s suit “virtually indestructible” so much more than a plot device. It means she truly took the time to understand every Super’s power and bring out the best of it in their super suit. A Super may (or may not) understand their physical limitations, but with these suits Edna can push those boundaries even further.
The scene's realistic dialogue may be a vestige that there was originally a pilot, a friend of Helen's who was flying the plane. He can be heard over the phone when Helen calls for a jet. His original purpose was to be killed in this exchange so we know the villains here are serious, this is a serious movie where people can die. I don't remember the reason why they cut him.
I think they decided it added unnecessary complication to have a character they introduced and then killed within 10 minutes. Iirc

My memory of the director's commentary is that John Lasseter saw the scenes and asked, "Wouldn't it be better if Helen herself was flying the plane?"
Brad Bird initially said "No, someone has to pay the price; we have to establish threat and stakes" ...But then he thought about it, they tried it with Helen, and everyone including him felt it worked better so they changed it.
The cut pilot's name was Snug, by the way. He still appears in the final version of the film, but he was relegated to the person who lends Helen the jet that was used in this scene and can only be heard on the phone.
A great addition to this scene on top of what everyone else has said is the fact that Syndrome says "a government plane is requesting permission to land here" in the dialogue before this. Helen is using military lingo for her transmissions, so of course Syndrome assumes it's a government plane, not a civilian aircraft, even though it's just Helen piloting it.

I like how her competency as a pilot is blended seamlessly into her competency with her superpower, the real and the imagined
"Repeat" is a brevity code used to signal an artillery unit to, well, repeat its last fire mission. As the action starts Helen, along with almost every movie ever made, uses this code incorrectly to preface saying a message twice; the proper phrase is "say again." What's interesting is that she actually uses the correct protocol near the end of the scene, when she's under much more pressure. "There are children aboard; say again, there are children aboard!"
I wonder if this is an intentional portrayal of old training kicking in as the pressure mounts, or if the writers simply thought those phrases were interchangeable.
Also take a moment to appreciate the music of this scene, perfectly matching the stress and tension of the moment.
It is not just the fact that she’s desperate. It’s not just the fact that this is insanely well animated. It’s the fear. She’s terrified for her herself and her kids. Mirage is horrified that this is happening and Bob can only imagine what’s going on, scared he’s going to lose his family any second. Violet and Dash’s actors sell genuine screams of terror as they fall. As a child, I had no idea what she was saying; I didn’t even connect how dangerous the missiles were. I was still scared to bits because I gleaned it off of everyone else. I was able to recognize later that something that should not have happened almost happened.
And the insane bit? Up until now, Helen thought she was going to get Bob because he had been unfaithful. Maybe she thought something else was going on, because his super suit gave off the signal, but it wasn’t until they sent FIVE missiles at her that she concluded this was bigger. And that her kids were aboard.
Goes to show just how much of a right bastard Syndrome was. He seemed like a cartoonish villain until this moment. This scene and the one immediately following the explosion shows how truly deranged he’s gotten.
the incredibles (first movie) has to be one of the most serious animated disney/pixar films to ever been made in recent times. the way the film talks about life such as family, relationships, stress, shit even the fear of infidelity. it’s such a great film and one of my favorites til this day.

This is really about a smarts. Helen/Elastigirl knows missile impact is already intacted and a way she and her kids can survive this is that her suit is missile and explosion proof as she bundled all of them up upon impact, and through free fall, the suit is elastic like her name as it even transforms into a parachute. And this proves Elastigirl is really not just strong but very smart on any crossroad.
Most of the early dialogue is pretty standard for even civilian pilots, but then you start adding in things like "Angels 10" and "Buddy spike" and it adds a new depth of character to that whole scene and to Helen as a whole. I can see this audio giving a few figure pilots flashbacks, it certainly gave me chills.
Stroke 3 was definitely defending six there. IYKYK.

I was only 8 when I saw this movie. Looking back on it these radio transmissions give me the chills. Even though it’s an animated movie.
I can't put into words how upset it makes me that modern Disney/Pixar no longer take risks or approach serious topics like this anymore. Watch Incredibles 2 and there is no scene in it that holds a candle to this one. Or the moment when Bob learns that the majority of his friends and allies from the Glory Days were systematically killed. Or when he threatens to crush Mirage like a toothpick after he thinks his family is dead. Even early in the movie when Helen and Bob are arguing after he comes home from knocking down the building engulfed in flames has more weight to it than anything in the sequel.
They literally don't tell stories the way they used to and it sucks.

The consultant they used is definitely ex military. A commercial pilot probably wouldn't know the "angels" designation nor the term "buddy spiked".
Maybe the implication is Helen is retired Air Force or trained with them.
That is the implication. She has elasticity powers so she would be great for testing aircraft. And then it comes full circle in this scene. Showing that she is an experienced and competent Super, despite her wish to only be a family woman.

This movie went into way more detail than it needed to multiple times over for everything from insurance claims to military flight jargon and I love it for that.
One of the many reasons the Incredibles is still one of the best superhero movies of all time. The superpowers are secondary to their actual skills as heroes.

As a CAP radio operator, I commend Helen and the VA for actually taking the time to learn about proper radio communications/protocols. And using “over” and “out” properly and not using “over and out” I’ve seen some shows/games (I’m looking at you Halo and your confusing logic for pro-word usages) where it’s only “over and out” and never spaced out using those two pro-words correctly. I honestly didn’t need the translation (with the exception of the military terminology) to understand what Helen is trying to convey. And have to commend Helen’s VA to her dedication to learning the FAA Phonetic Alphabet.

I watched this movie as a kid and I distinctly remember this scene. This is the 1st time I have re-watched it after becoming a pilot (about 15 years later) and I am blown away at the realism and military radio comms! Must have had a military aviator help out big time for this! They definitely do NOT put this much effort into movies and TV shows anymore and it really shows. I wish they did this still.
