Summary:
Originally broadcast on MTV as the headline act of its New Year's Eve broadcast and simulcast on FM radio for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this lively set from the popular British New Wave rockers Duran Duran marks their first major New York City triumph.
The group, which was spearheaded by vocalist Simon LeBon, had ruled the MTV charts since the end of the previous year, but they did not take off on radio as rapidly. For this show, Duran Duran was not only performing to a packed house at New York's Palladium Theater, they were playing to millions of viewers all over the world. The stakes were high, and Duran Duran went for the gold. Shortly after this performance, in early 1983, "Rio" was in the U.S. Top 10.
All the essential early hits are featured here - including "Rio," "Save A Prayer," "Hungry Like The Wolf," and "Girls On Film." The show is interrupted to count down the New Year on MTV, but otherwise it remains a consistently upbeat show. The group augmented its original five-piece lineup with the addition of saxophonist/keyboard player Andy Hamilton.
This performance showcases the band when they were on the brink of worldwide stardom, if they weren't already there. The success of Duran Duran during this time period gave them enough momentum to get through most of the eighties as a successful act. It would also serve as the base of hits to keep the band poised for more than one reunion in the years that followed. - Hudba
These people had NO IDEA how lucky they were.
It is 2022 and I am STILL jamming on Duran......I am 53 years old and I will always dig this band!!!!
Love the way everyone is watching and dancing instead of filming on a phone.
I'm 52 and this made my night!
Apr 06 1987, Köln (Germany), Strange Behaviour Tour ... My very first pop concert ever, was 15y old. Good times.
Me too! I'm 53!!!
I'm 29 and had the pleasure of seeing them live in Chicago back in August 2022 with my mother. Hell of a concert!
Most bands have a lead guitarist ... Duran Duran had a lead Bassist!
have a lead bassist. john is still lead until these days
these days...pop bands....have nothing. there are no bands like this now, in the charts
Andy t was the only 🎸 st u r wrong
Actually as a bassist John is highly regarded but as a musician and ironically as the founder of the band who has made the greatest contributions to the band, he is overlooked.
New order as well
Oh my God, could you imagine being in a club with a capacity of 3400 people seeing Duran Duran in 1982? Can somebody please hook me up with a time machine? Thank you!
❤
Hardly looks packed at the time?
This is GOLDEN, the audience has NO IDEA that they are in the presence of Greatness.
Thank goodness this was filmed so well...
"Beatles Like" covers it NM... Perfectly stated.
I thought the same thing when looking at a shot from the point of view of the audience and seeing people that had no idea.

This was a great concert, and a month earlier there was an equally good one at the London Hammersmith Odeon in November 1982 - Japan with their Sons Of Pioneer set.

It is 2023, and I still love Duran Duran! I'm 56 and proud😊
56, you should know better then. This was a band with no talent other than image.
I am 55 and I am proud too. I only listened to the singles back then, but now I want it all...
it's 2024. i'm sooooo fan too !!!! love DD forever :D
It’s 2024, I’m 50 and I agree with this statement.
50 in 2024, Duran forever! Rio is one of the best albums of all time! Love those guys!
CANNOT believe this album/preformance is going to be 40 YEARS OLD this year. Holy Mother of God.
I'm so thankful that I was 13 years old in 1982 and had the chance to experience all of that great music in real time, with each great record release from Duran Duran, Thomas Dolby, Wall of Voodoo, Gary Numan, etc. It was a wonderful time of musical discovery. Now that I'm 50, I find it painful how the music industry has degenerated to such a degree that I'm watching a 40-year-old video that's 100 times more interesting than anything I've heard in ages.
You can say that again!!! We are truly blessed to have experienced first-hand, the music of the 80's.
I too was 13 in 1982. I think our age was perfect timing to enter into our Teens for the 80s decade. And then the 90s we evolve into young adults. And in the 2000, the right age to complain about the new crap music.
agreed 100%. rapCrap is pushed by the media bosses for a reason.
What happened to melodic pop??
Check out Cory Wong he’s bringing life back to the younger music scene.
John Taylor on top of his game! Dig that bassline...
ak bass Hes. Master.
ak bass no. doubt
He played so dominantly in the early 80s.
Priceless and nearly 40 years in the business outstanding thats why im alife long fan, i knew back then they where brilliant and had something especial, i first heard them on the radio in around 1980 a couldnt wait to see them on top of the pops couldnt believe it sounds great and first saw Simon le Bon wanted to marry him i though he was the most handsome man on earth, Duran Duran are a very underrated band Simons a great song writter they should be in the music hall of fame.
@@marlasecrist9537 John Taylor is a pure genius
Man Duran Duran is the sh**!! This bass player is one of the reason why I fell in love playong the bass
John taylor is THE MAN
You are correct....great bass playing! Exquisite tone, too.
Best Bassist in the music industry!!
Totally Agree! I can never understand how most critics skip over John Taylor when talking about great bass players. They were heavily influenced by bands like Chic (you can tell with the bass) and of course kept working with Nile Rodgers. I have seen them live many times and they are always an amazing show. One of my favorite bands of all time.
@@deepakrama Yes. The interplay between John Taylor and the guitarist on Rio reminds me of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush. I love bands that feature a prominent bass.
Roger Taylor, most underrated drummer ever. Solid rhythm always and precision. His skill is way above many of the thrash metal and harder rock genre drummers who just bang away loudly to get attention. Great drummer and all around cool guy.
ABSOLUTELY ! The rhythm section of Roger and John ! They both played with the dexterity of Fusion musicians with out EVER stepping on each others toes, or any one else's in that band. Bad Cats for Sure !
I've always said that Roger Taylor iZ one of the worldZ great, great drummers. Highly underrated... I mean, granted he did get featured in many of the drumming magazines over the years, but I feel that heZ often overlooked. HiZ timekeeping iZ so freaking solid! He haZ become one of my all time favorite drummers and the primary reason I got into Duran Duran!!! 😆☕☕☕🥁🥁🥁
He’s rated exactly where he belongs.
Siiii me encanta 💖💕
Single pedal that sounded like a double pedal and a good farmer.
That *SETLIST!!!!*
Those are literally the BEST Duran Duran *BASSLINE* songs!!!
Right! I personally love My Own Way for its bassline as well
Totally agree!!
Watching this a few days after DD were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I was 12 when they did this concert. I was lucky enough that my parents let me see them in '84 when I was 14. My first concert ever and I'll never forget how magical it was. Such electricity. They're still so amazing live, even 40 years later. So lucky to have grown up with DD. So glad they are finally getting the accolades they deserve. What a fabulous band.
John Taylor is total beast mode on bass. It's his beautiful rock solid timing and syncopation with always hitting the root note on the one beat. It's just the driving force behind all their music.
Yup. Should get more props
He certainly is and love that tone. It is so thick in the mids.
A beautiful beautiful man. Favorite bass player of the 80s for sure.
bass in Hold back the Rain is one of the best ever, and John Taylor is master true
@@playbassken Yes, the thickness in the mids is what it gives that bass it's character. Nowadays most bassplayers have a lot of lows and highs but no mids...Btw. I do own an Aria SB-700 which is the model that John used on their first EP. It has that thick growly tone!
Live - no auto tune, no BS. That's exactly how live music suppose to sound.
And no de-esser :D
Agreed much!!
@@ev9466 Found the sound engineer. Haha :D :D :D
This was also before low wattage LED lighting too. Those can lights back in the day were HOT. Like, cook your skin if you touched them hot. That is why they were always sweating so much on stage back then.
There was an analogue version of simple auto-tune back then, as well as very effective de-essing, compression, and most effects that are available today. I would think that, by this point, Duran Duran had made enough money to afford those sorts of rack effects and/or the venue had them. Regarding this video, there is plenty of software capable of auto-tuning instruments and vocals, correcting timing errors, de-essing, etc even with final stereo mixes (look up "Melodyne"), and a lot of it can be done quite subtlely. I'm not saying that it was done here, but it could have been. (my gut says it was...it's a little too perfect for even the best live bands...Simon's singing actually sounds better than it did on their debut album IMHO, so either he mastered the art further by being on tour, or...???....but I could be wrong....)
It’s amazing how well Simon can sing, even when performing live and dancing around!
Powerful lungs!. People dont realize how hard that is to do and still sound good
And he still does at 60 something years old! I just saw them live this year of 2023 and they’re still amazing and Simon sounds exactly the same!❤
This is why we love the 80s. These guys were not just pretty boys but could really play and write great songs. A good measure of a band is how they sound live as apposed to the album. This sounds like the track. Great stuff.
Yes !! and th 80’s were th best time to b alive !!
Andy Taylor as backup vocalist. Wow! Awesome!
He’s an amazing singer. You should listen to his solo albums!
That bass is legit
Should be, Bernard Edwards of chic invented it and taught it to him
@SNORKYMEDIA John was self taught BUT he's more proficient player than anyone who learned formally that's one of many things that so genius about John. He wrote all his basslines and the music himself long before duran was signed by EMI. Bernard hadnt even met with John yet, or involved in the making of any duran's albums.
And so was Neurotic Outsiders.
@@SNORKYMEDIA he met bernard during the Power Station time, years after these songs were performed loll
right out of the gate, Duran Duran's bassist is phenomenal...I never realized! Wow!
He's a tasty funky player. I reckon he is the Key to their sound
John taylor is also the key to their success.
@@mshadow6147 also wouldn't be Duran Duran without Simon's vocals!
Yeah but there wouldn't be duran if john never started the band at the first place
@@mshadow6147 absolutely true! There wouldnt be duran duran without John Taylor!
Duran Duran's rythhm section was so powerful. Man, they could support any frontman... Love their early years...
It's now August 2022 ( thats 40 years after this concert!) Duran Duran just played at MSG in NYC and they still sound great and after all these years Simon's voice still sounds great!
They were so beautiful that nobody noticed the musical quality and professionalism of composing playing and singing, a very complete group that reaped many successes
yes. and still doing quite well. new album in the works!
Totally 💯 still excellent as well which is wonderful 💕
Nobody noticed? Are you nuts? They’ve always been huge! At least during my whole life! It was the music for me first and then the looks! Yes they’re handsome as heck but amazing musicians and masters at their art!
are you a 12 year old girl? This band had no musical acumen whatsoever, there were pants.
There is a RAW, almost-innocent energy in this show that is so infectious! I know the songs, but I'e never really heard them like this before... the strength of youth is so apparent.
i cant believe how young they were. back then, simon was the "old" one , ha, hes 25-ish here.
he couldnt have been 25....hes from my home town , pinnner in nw londonin 83 i was 15 and simon was only 5-6 years older than me so that puts him at roughlyy 21 22 in this concert

Thanks for sharing this footage, magnificent vintage Duran Duran.
John Taylor and that bass.
in 82 I lived around the block from the Palladium but could not get tickets so I just hung around 14th street to listen to the concert in the alleyway . 2 years later saw them at MSG,I was 18
Roger is killing it!!
Man these guys are fucking awesome players. I can't believe how good they sound live. Just crazy good. You can tell they played a lot to get where they are. Bass lines are crazy. Drums solid. Guitars are making the songs so much better and great backing vocals. Keyboards are very unique. Simon's voice is fuckin strong and just like the album.
just a shame about Le Bon's voice - their songs were great but the squealing vocals..... tsk tsk
@@morkygorky Simon's voice, like it or not, is iconic to the DD sound. It has pleading quality to it that is endearing to this fan and many others and no one else sounds like him. There are some DD songs I can't see anyone else doing justice as he owns them vocally. I will say that there are a few DD songs that I would have liked to hear with Andy's voice more out front (Careless Memory comes to mind) or maybe have Andy switch off in terms of leading vocals with Simon on a few songs to add a different flavor. Andy's early solo career showed off his voice more and IMO he had good enough vocals for this too have seriously been considered on a few tracks. His backing vocals added nicely to DD songs as it stands
@@needahandle I must admit that Simon Le Bons singing is better NOW than it ever was! - Shame John Taylor isn't singing, I liked his 7" for "Nine and a half Shades of Grey".....
@@morkygorkyThis reminds me of the story where U2's guitarist Edge was told by his GF that Bono can't sing, dump him.
Yup, Bono and Lebon sort of proved all that wrong in an epic way as they became icons.
@@MrSean03839 maybe she was referring to the LOOKS factor 😆
In my opinion for this being 82' DD were in a way ahead of their time. This concert sound damn good. Lead singer is perfect for this .
That's why they were called "New Wave" at the time. DD was way ahead of many bands.
no, new wave was 1979-1980. This was the aftermath of New Romantic.@@MrSean03839
Simon Le Bon. Could you get a less charismatic front person? And have you noticed how tiny his feet are?

That DD has been constantly overlooked for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a DISGRACE! Even then in '82, these guys were MINT and they just touched our shores! To this day, they are still going strong and their fan base is as dedicated as ever! I became a fan in '82 when seeing their faces on a cover of 16 Magazine. Then came this, aired as an MTV New Years Eve concert, and I was hooked, deep! Many passed them off as just some BOY BAND... what the f*** ever! These guys gave us ART! The Chauffer is still one of my all time favorite videos and My spouse and I donned our walls all NAGEL in homage to them, my favorite band EVER! Nick & John, I THANK YOU, immensely for it all! THE BEATLES OF THE 80S 🎉🎉🎉
34 years later I still listening to Duran Duran. Never get bored. Still follow them in style.
Rio has such a busy and addicting bass line. The muted notes he doesn't hit are just as important than the ones that ring out
Yeah, just love the way he tickles them!!
The play on words is fun- Rio means river, Rio spelled with an accent over the "o" means she laughed (in the past tense, not the past perfect tense), and Rio is the name of the girl the song is about. "Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand. Just like that River twisting through a dusty land." When my high school Spanish class had to chose names from a list of common names used by Spanish speakers, I chose Rio- a name not on the list. My teacher allowed it only if I put an accent over the "i" so as not to confuse it with river or she laughs.

My all time fav song.
@@andreamariterickson5885 Great analysis! The only wrong thing is that "Río", with the accent (tilde) actually means river. Greetings from Argentina :)
The drummer is insane with that high energy hi-hat work!! Underrated band.
He is but not underrated band at all.
@@katanemes Indeed they are! In most people minds DD is just another 80s boygroup... But they were great musicans and awesome composers (New Religion, Come undone and stuff). Most people remember them because of The reflex and Is there something i should know but they were so much more. Especially with Andy they were such a strong, powerful liveband.
Not an underrated band by any means! I am forever a Duranie. John, Nick, Simon, Roger, Andy!
On my fiftieth birthday I was at a local Octoberfest seated at stage right; it was a excellent angle to observe the hard work of the band drummer! Elton John's manager said once it that since his client played a stationary instrument it was harder to "shine" during a performance than lead singers or guitarists! Believe me if there were no drums the audience would know!
Wouldn't say underrated, they have a well deserved successs and still rock! Even some centennials know about them! To me, they are as important as Queen or Wham.
中学生の頃ラジオ番組でこのライブを聴きながら録音したことを懐かしく思い出しました。

Duran Duran, one of the greatest NEW WAVE band of all times, in top of their game, throwing a epic new years party to a crowd that didn't deserve them. Oh, the injustice! Amazing display of everything, those were the times!!!

I know two bass players and they both say that John Taylor is the most underrated bass player of all-time, never mind the 80's.

They have been. Critics panned them all the time. Their fans and actual musicians know better. I know some musicians in their 50's and they say that Duran Duran was the most underrated band. They love the rhythm section the most. John and Roger were great. Andy was when he played with Power Station because he could show off his guitar solo skills with that style of music.
John Taylor at his very best.
I luv my DURAN BOYS!!! I miss these days, when they were ALL together!
The good old days when even pop acts could be play live.
John is just killing it!
I site him as an influence just as easily as Steve Harris or Gerry Lee!
Attaboy, Nigel!😎
Geddy Lee
Taylor, Harris, and Lee. The Holy Triumvirate of 1980s bassists. With Honorable Mention to Michael Anthony for giving Van Halen their signature vocal sound with his high harmonies.
the bassline of john Taylor
OMG! amazing! Never seen this, looks similar to 1982 hammersmith concert. Andy Hamilton should be a member of the band for all his conributions over years! He joined them for comeback in 2004. Loved this, thanku x
Taylor not Hamilton
@@user-js2vk6ty6u no he means Andy Hamilton who often helped out with Saxophone, keyboards etc
Roger and John.....Say no More.
Yeah...agree.
cesar gaspar Exactly my thoughts😆
John, I met after a Philadelphia show? One of the nicest people I’ve ever met. So personable.
Duran Duran is one Hell of a band. They just played at the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, California this past May 11th. I wanted to be there so bad but I couldn’t make it. I did watch it all though and these guys still sound absolutely amazing.
Killer bass.
Would kill to have gone to this.
I would just quit my part time job to go to this. There are other jobs.
spakuloid I. like. the song. jerk. my. big. weiner
This was the MTV New Years Ball that year.
Spakuloid same
Obviously somebody did kill to go to this, that audience is dead as fuck. Shitty fucking audience.
So underrated!
I need a time machine.
My favorite Duran Duran era and my favorite album ('Rio'), since when a was a child on the 80's!
Watching this almost 40 years later, makes me feel like a 15-year-old again. I'm not sure why Andy Taylor didn't get more love, he was totally cute. So glad they will all be there for the RNR HOF induction later this year!
