Dry Fly Fishing Isonychia, North Central, PA - Wooly Bugged

On Sunday I fished a small tributary that supports a great population of wild brown trout. This stream also has sporadic hatches of the Isonychia mayfly, commonly known as the Slate Drake. These large bugs sporadically hatch from mid-June to early September here in Pennsylvania. My hope was that I’d be able to use a dry dropper rig to target the trout with both an Isonychia emerger and nymph. With the sunlight pouring through the tree canopy, I wasn’t sure the fish would eagerly come up to the surface. It turns out, they were more than willing to move for a #8 Slate Drake Parachute (emerger). I was able to film some great takes on the surface and thoroughly enjoyed the day. In this video I use my 9’-5wt Orvis Recon with a standard WF line and a 9’-5X hand tied fluorocarbon leader.

Isonychia nymphs are some of my favorite stream critters! Very streamlined strong swimmers. Which helps them feed since they are filter feeders. Their forelegs have long hairs and their mouthparts are comb-like. They hold their front legs together like a basket and use it to strain fine particulate organic matter from the flowing water. Then when it's sufficiently full they pull the foreleg hairs through their mouthparts to ingest their snack. I often see them at the tail end of small pools and you can watch them feed like this.

As always, your dedication to presenting quality videos shines through. Some of those fish had really decent size to them for a smaller stream. That's always a pleasant surprise. Great explanation on the how and why of your set up. Lots of vloggers fail to do that, and could learn something from those, such as yourself, that do. I also enjoy seeing your reaction to missed takes and lost fish. We've all been there and understand the feeling. I call that " keeping it real". Chalk up another great video to Wooly Bugged. I too was surprised at the size of some of the wild trout you were catching. Not sure how much editing you did, but those were some fish to be proud of catching. Also, appreciate the review on the iWaders. I am looking at buying a pair, especially considering their price point. I like the idea of re-enforced knees as I am not as limber as you. Considering these crazy times in which we live, sure hope you enjoyed your day with nature and the peace offered by one of God's creations.

Tight Lining MD thanks Mike, ya I have a love hate relationship with the dry/dropper rig. I don’t like casting it and I don’t like fighting a bad drift either. Regardless, it can be effective.
@@WoolyBugged All good points. Its an imperfect system. The other downfall, with tying off the bend of the hook, is that sometimes they miss the dry because the line from nymph pushes away dry as they try to close down. I do like the visual of watching the dry take, or if dry goes under, like its an indicator. I usually double surgeons knot tippet together and then use the "tag" of the line to tie on dry. That gives a very natural drift to it, and lets it sit by itself on top for better hook ups on dry. Keep up the great work Mike, you are crushing it!

Thanks for asking, if that water was more clear we would’ve probably had an amazing day up there, not disappointed with the results though hahaha but we really did have to work hard for em! Glad I ended up landing one of the big wild browns up there! Not many of them, most of em are just monster stockers, but the big browns are in there and when you hook on you know it!😂😂😂 With that 5 wt I could barely control that fish since it was so heavy!
On the dry dropper rig, what size is your dry fly? Looks like a 12 or 10

The day of second chances! haha wow. Great fishing. I noticed on the failed hook sets (and I struggle with this too) they seem to happen when you set the hook upwards or against the current. I read that because fish sit facing into the current waiting for food we should try to always set the hook with the flow of the current and towards the body of the fish, instead of pulling it out of their mouths. Just something I noticed in the footage. Either way cheers! Great video as always. Can I ask about your back pack and chest pack set up? It looks like it's fishpond and one piece but I assume its two different pieces and I also noticed you have a camel pack for drinking?
I'm glad you noted that friend, I read the same thing and applied the technique and it absolutely was effective, you're absolutely right. If you're approaching the pool from downstream and casting upstream, you're going to want to set the hook down stream. I found that my hook up ratio significantly increased when using this in situations where I had the proper space to execute.

Look in the Pa. Compendium for Class "A" wild trout streams. In NJ they are open all year.
All those fish you caught were fat. Lots of food in that stream.
