I am so happy to see you working in an art journal! Yay! I actually purchased the same mix media journal back in January from Walmart and I love it! You got me curious with the India ink tho, so I got them out & started playing. I used the wet brush technique you were using and discovered a neat tie-dye effect when I went over a stencil with a wet brush first then after I took the stencil away and started dabbing a brush loaded with India ink and just let it bleed into the wet water the effect was awesome! Hi Lyndsay! I finally bought this set of inks and oh boy, I enjoy them! Super fun to work with, like WC but the permanence is an added plus for experimentation! The white is better in my opinion for highlights than my posca or signos...we all have our prefs, I guess, but I will never be without the white!!! Great painting and video! Thanks!

Gret, Lindsay: thanks. I have all the DocMartin's Liquid Watercolors and absolutely LOVE them. Considered using them to make sprays, but feel they're just too expensive to do that; instead, have been using Brusho pigments, distilled water and a tad of liquid gel medium and they have turned out just great; no clogging or anything. I thoroughly recommend them - they can be used just like watercolours and/or mixed with virtually anything - and they're soooooo vivid!

I love it.....cant wait till pay day.....Oriental Trading Company will be my new best friend....I already have an account for party supplies, and I have bought their stamps through your recommendation during Christmas and my children and I had a blast making cards.. so I know that we will have just as much fun with the India inks.....thank you for showing us no fear and to always have fun because there is never a bad creation just one that we learn from..

FYI - the small holes that are between the bottles in Bambay Inks are for the user to set the bottle in. They fit exactly. One should then dip the brush directly into the bottle. They are made for that purpose. BTW - I like to watch a lot of you videos. Your funny/friendly/silly type which I really like!

This paper doesn't do the craters-style buckling, but if you get enough water on it, the paper sometimes begins to rise like the top of a tunnel. Ross Barbera (I love him too!) had a great tip: you simply paint the back half of the paper with water as well and the paper will lay flat so you have an easier time working on it. Harder to do when you've already done art on the back, but sometimes it works out just right.
Also wanted to say I agree with you about using the journal as practice-- that's exactly what some are using it for. Mistakes aren't possibe-- simply gesso or collage over the stuff you can't stand to see, though it's totally cool to be able to look through your journal to see how far you've come.
You don't have to add words, but a lot of people do, sometimes jusy using quotations to convey a feeling or something going on in their lives. Some use it to work through emotions or situations, some keep it light-hearted. The point is to do whatever feels right at the time. Like you said Lindsay, you don't have to share with anyone, which works for many. Others share because they like knowing they aren't alone and sometimes because they simply like sharing their artwork. It's all good!

The Bombay India inks make excellent sprays, they don't clog or dry up in a spray bottle & as long as you give them a good shake before use they are great for stencils and backgrounds.
Nice start to the journal series! I'll be trying your technique of spattering - I see it gives a fine mist and good control.
I find the best way to use my drawing inks is to decant them using plastic pipettes, I got 100 for just over £3. It means that I dont waste my inks as much and also its fun using them to mix like some mad scientist or to droplet the colours directy onto the page giving a sunburst effect.... lindsay your truly fabulous x

Hi! I really enjoyed this video! Just some tips that I have observed over watching many videos, is that other people used less ink, because as you have probably noticed already, a little goes a long way, and so you don't wast ink because it does dry. Second, many other people have mixed these colors, since they are just so vivid, with water and/or other water colors. A common brand that people used was winsor and newton half pan set, which has a variety of nice colors that compliment the hues of the inks. I really hope you will make more of these videos. It turned out beautifully!! Thanks so much!!
I just finished my first mixed media piece that I truly love! I am gathering my essentials and I work on things every day. The hardest part has been finding a watercolor book that feels right in size. I am using the mixed media and Canson 140lb watercolor pad, I like to cut those sheets in half, and that is the right size, so I am going to try the Strathmore Watercolor Landscape and see how it goes from there!
The nice thing about journaling is that you don't always WANT to do stuff for show. Sometimes, you just want to get things out. I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who keeps a written journal, but I imagine art journals are much the same. It's something to get your thoughts and ideas out. :)

I heard you mention that you might do real time and give a supply sheet out to us ahead of time….. I did that with one artist on You Tube and LOVE LOVED it. Was serious fun! She gave so many minutes for each step, it was a great way to just let go and do art. Thanks for the great video. I was really curious about the ink….

Hi Lindsay, I just bought my first Bombay ink and I love it! This video is perfectly timed for my newest art supply. FYI, the Liquitex inks are very similar to the Bombay inks in liquidy texture meaning they flow almost the same. The FW inks are much thicker in comparison. OH BTW I love this video and your wax over paper/stencil & salt techniques are fabulous ideas!

Instead of using the toothbrush and getting paint under your nails. Use a splatter screen. I make mine out of old screens. Apply paint on the screen. Hold secure with one hand right above area you want splattered and hit with stick/end of brush. Paint goes through your screen.

I love art journaling but I get busy with other hobbies and then all of a sudden I just need to just play and not worry about being exact like quilting or scrapbooking and it frees my mind.
I was told to leave the lids off the Twinkling H20's until they dry completely or they may go mouldy.
it says to let them dry before capping in the package but thanks for the reminder:)
Thanks Violet & Lindsay for that pearl of wisdom! I bought a set of six Sparkling H2O's today and just had fun with them on watercolor paper. There were no directions in the set I bought. Actually I could tell two of them had been used and the set returned, those instructions are probably with the returner. Thanks Michaels! I love these paints and am really excited about them and their brilliance. I'm glad you both mentioned not capping until dry. I was planning on that, but it's good to know!

I have used this volcanic pumice hand cleaner, (bought it at Michaels for about $4) and it seems to take off the white india ink if i don't wait too long. I am not sure how it would work with black ink, I haven't been brave enough to try it yet...

Frugal art journal tip, the free magazine outside of your local phone shop or thd insert from your daily paper can make a great art journal when using acrylics or things like distress inks, you need to treag it with gesso or a think background though first unless you like the images peeking through, others have used old books, I liked this as a starter to art journalling, as it was free and ment I could try before spending out on a more expensive journal,

This is so great, love this video., I have been eyeing PH Martin's Inks at Joann's and have a coupon so must go get some. Wish they had a eye dropper cap, that would make it easier to place them for mixing and not waste so much product. Love Canson's mixed media pads, too. Thanks for demonstrating.
I use xl papers now exclusively because I can afford it. iv been wanting to try the bombay inks, so thank you for your video. I have never heard of oriental trading company, but I use dharma trading company for my tie dye dyes. they have some art stuff too so maybe check that place out. they are wonderful.

I have been wanting to get inks.In one of my kids Usborne art books it shows blobbing some inks and then blowing it with a straw. the edges branch out and then they blotted in the center and created faces. I would like seeing you try something like this.
@Jennifer Harvey: The Toob isn't letting me respond to you question re: using India inks on a gel plate. They stained my homemade plate rather dramatically. I suspect they might do the same with the commercial plate, but don't know for sure. They are permanent after drying, so won't hurt future use (inks didn't hurt the surface texture/flexibility), but the leftover colors might make you crazy like they do to me. It's harder to see what I have on there now.
would these inks work well for adding highlight/whites to watercolour paintings? where neeeded? ps your youtubes are always great.
Hi. The inks will not clog a sprayer. In fact they create a fantastic manual airbrush when you mix a few drops with lots of water in a spray bottle. I use it often. Only colour that is problematic is the white ink because it is a bit different in texture and tends to curdle when mixed with other inks and water. (Strange, I know!)

Did you also know you could dilute the ink with water in a palette and when you apply it to your picture, you could use your finger to sweep the colour making a lovely blending effect between the wet top colour and the dried bottom colour? This would work really well for your wings instead of concentrated ink and a brush. I enjoy watching your videos! :)
Love the bright colors. I don't understand the difference between the Bombay Indian and the Hydrus, and it looks like theyre both lightfast and you can watercolor with them, which is exciting. I also like the granulation and wonder if you could add the ox gall to punch up the granulation.
Ox gall won't effect granulation. The India ink has a shellac in it to make it waterproof.
@thefrugalcrafter good to know! I just ordered a set of the dr ph Martin Bombay ink, and it says they're lightfast. They're supposed to be here tomorrow along with the large set of cretacolor colored pencils so I hope you have tutorials on both of those. I also got the kuretake gansai tambi watercolors when they were on-sale and I'll be looking for some fun tutorials and projects for all of them! I put things in my wishlist in Amazon and when they go on a great sale, sometimes even over 50% off, that's when I buy!

Interesting still not sure on the art journaling.
But maybe next time you can also list the tools used such as the size and type of brush, the stencils whether or not they can still be bought, and if the pin tips are different sizes.
I'm only suggesting because I know the techniques, concepts and designs will be different; the pattern design of our pages will be different but if someone likes the product it would be helpful of you give the name or details of the tool.
There's no need to get websites for the tools and I know it will take a bit more time but it would be quite helpful if you just gave the general info on the tool so we could find it.

I find it hilarious you have a heater on and I have air conditioning on, it shows the diverse weather in the world. At one time on the same continent.

try using alcohol to reduce the inks first it is the resin that would clog the alcohol changes that. then mix with water.

This might be an old video, but how would your india inks compare to your inktastic? Wouldn't they be roughly the same thing?
Try reactivating the dried ink in the tray with 91% alcohol and a qtip or brush.

I bought some mini musters - do you think I could use the ink in them? Would you dilute with alcohol or water or neither? Also, can you reactivate the ink after it dries in your palette? Thank you!
+encouraginghope once they dry they are permanent but you van use alcohol to clean them off the palette. You can put them in s mister. You might want alcohol rather than water due to the drying and potential for clogs.
I realize this is an older video but as always your work is inspiring. I came across it because I just got a set of inks just like yours. I have a question you may or not be able to answer. You used the product "twinkling H2o". Is that similar to "wink of stella"? There are just so many products out there and I am assuming you just wanted to get some shimmer and shine on the wings😊. Thank you for continuing to inspire us that have a creative fire simmering within. You simplify the process while igniting that creativity! May you be richly blessed.
You can use any shimmer watercolor product:)
Do you ever gesso your pages? And do you only paint on the back of a page or just the front of each page? This is fascinating.
I have not needed to Gesso this paper because it is sized fort mixed media:) I am only working on one side because I might want to frame some of these:)
