Joe Satriani was Steve Vai's music/guitar instructor and he also started the G3 project which had different lineups during its run. All of the concerts were amazing. The way it worked is that each guitarist would do some of their own songs on stage alone then at the end all three would play together and do songs from each other. It was incredible to watch them take turns soloing on each others tunes.
As a side note, Satriani's initial music instruction was by Jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and with reclusive jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. Also, in addition to Steve Vai he also taught several other famous guitarists such as Kirk Hammett (Metallica), David Bryson of Counting Crows, Kevin Cadogan from Third Eye Blind, Larry LaLonde of Primus and Possessed, Alex Skolnick of Testament, Rick Hunolt (ex-Exodus), Phil Kettner of Lȧȧz Rockit, Geoff Tyson of T-Ride, and Charlie Hunter.

I think ppl love the whole package. For guitar, his groves and melodies make it more than just scales. The band tightness and groove with excellent sound production help create the entire experience.

The bass player in this video, Dave LaRue, is an excellent player too. He's the bass player in the Flying Colors band you have reacted to.

Please do Hordes of Locusts by Satriani. It was on his debit album 1985. Still can't believe how amazing every track is on it. He did teach Steve Vai along with Kurt Hammet of Metallica

I think a lot of people will suggest Joe's bigger hits to look at, but I think if you really want to experience him from the start, check out the song Rubina from his first album Not of This Earth. The song is named after his wife. There is a great live performance from the Montreux Jazz Festival. Plus he has a ton of hair! One thing you'll notice about Joe's live performances that is similar to Steve Vai, is his band is always filled with exceptionally talented musicians.

Did you notice just how far Joe`s span was? About over 6 or 7 of the top frets and he`s able to slide it up and down! Pure genius.

For me, Satriani/Vai is like Kenobi/Skywalker, with Steve becoming, in my opinion, more innovative and better at the trade, but never becoming evil or trying to destroy his teacher...

Vai is amazing, but his style is alot more choppy, and less melodic.

Check out Rubina, or Echo, from the Time Machine live album. If fact, the last four tracks are one continuous recording from a 1988 show in San Diego, incredible.

It's a beautiful piece but it's tough to quantify the solo section on this one, he goes a little avant garde somehow in there with the arpeggiated bursts. One of my favorites from this show is "Always with Me Always with You," he just nails it.

Great reaction. I agree with one of the other comments that suggests checking out some of got less well known tracks. For me 'wind in the trees' or ' bamboo ' are excellent, amazing musicianship. To be honest anything!!

Chords of life, and rubina's blue sky happiness. Those are some satriani you may enjoy. There's also an acoustic song from vai called sisters you should try. Just make sure it's the album version as the live version is only partial.
