  • Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down with author, journalist, and political commentator Glenn Greenwald. They discuss the war on information: how social moralism, religious rhetoric, conceptual safety, and false compassion have been used and propagandized to reshape the western world into a good versus bad, red versus blue polarity. They also explore the human need for meta narratives, the basis of morality, and the case for God in a world that offers nihilism.
Glenn Greenwald is a journalist, author, and former constitutional law attorney. His original hit blog was a springboard into writing for Salon and the Guardian with a focus on national security issues. In 2013, he published the now iconic Snowden documents detailing global government surveillance by the U.S. and British governments. In 2019 Greenwald again broke leaked documents, this time for “Operation Car Wash,” which shone a spotlight on the corruption of the Brazilian judicial system. He would later detail his work in a series of books such as Securing Democracy: My Fight for Press Freedom and Justice in Brazil and No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State.

Well I think many not sane people need his voice more than the sane. But really they’ve done a great job in making sure people of the wrong political color don’t listen to him, and merely disagree. Surely you can spot where he is wrong in his thinking. Why that thinking is wrong. But most can’t hold more than one perspective in their mind. And psychology is the comparison of perspective per se. Of course they cannot.

Funny. I found myself using g the exact same phrase- "politically homeless"- to describe myself a few weeks ago. I think it's a common sentiment these days, and increasing rapidly.
Both sides have their points, sure, but both sides are basically authoritarian and polarized to the point of madness now. This is true both for the establishment as well as much of the constituencies on both sides.
Dialogues like this are important. I'd like to see more of them. The time is more than ripe for sane people of all political persuasions to unite against this duopolistic, tyrannical lunacy.

However Glenn stating that it doesn't really matter whether the corporate world is cynically embracing the leftist identity politics, or whether corporate leaders now buy into, is something I would disagree with. I think it is very important to understand which of those two is the dominant driver. One can't find a solution until the problem is clearly understood.

I don't think it's that mysterious though. It's a new kind of Marxism, as JBP has repeatedly stated. They no longer divide society in rich vs poor, but between sexes, races, sexuality, etc. They're happy to join forces with corporations that will help them achieve more power, and the corporates are happy to promote an ideology that removes competition and helps them stay rich.

Pretty spot-on. There is a prevailing sense among the "elites" that the average citizen lacks the necessary mental abilities to guide their own lives. Due to this assumed lack, they craft legislation that supposedly mitigates problems *for* the citizen, not dissimilar from an overbearing parent that would try to prevent their child from experiencing *any* harm by sheltering and spoiling them.

I appreciate that they discussed airport tyranny. After flying across America earlier this year, I was so disgusted at basically ALL of the staff I encountered amidst my travels because of the disdain filter they all had over their eyes when viewing the general public. I've never been able to tolerate people who truly believe they are "above" other people like they somehow bleed a different color other than red. I'll be damned surprised if I ever fly again.

    • @marcwood2741
      @marcwood2741 Před 7 měsíci +12

Two things. One is that this conversation ignored the fact that the airline industry was dead after 911. They were begging the government to do something to restore public trust in airline safety. If there is a scandal, it's that they didn't pay for it. There is no right to fly and it shouldn't be a government service. Two, the TSA actually does a very good job of training high school graduates on highly complex equipment and a labyrinth of ever-changing rules. What they are required to do is awkward and complicated and few consider how many difficult situations they are presented with from the crazy or the drunk or the demanding or the amazingly rude and entitled or the seriously disabled. The officers don't make the rules, but they are required to follow them by law. They are just as much stuck in the system as the traveling public. The TSA had to get up and running overnight and mass hire and mass train a bunch of poorly paid citizens to perform this difficult and unpleasant job. If you had to deal with a thousand travelers a day for 30K, you would very quickly find yourself being on guard that any encounter could be one of the dozens of rude, entitled, irrational, and/or combative interactions that you deal with every single day. I'm not saying that they shouldn't ideally suck it up and reset with a smile all day. I'm just saying that the TSA did the best possible job that anyone could reasonably expect with what it had to do and what it had to work with. I know there have been countless embarassing anecdotes for them, but that is also in the context of screening 100s of millions of passengers every year in a fairly timely fashion. Trust me when I tell you that you would be shocked at how many guns and potentially explosive devices they have intercepted. Did any of those people have bad intent? probably not. Is it all worth the cost? I don't think so. But it wasn't part of any conspiracy psyop and the government got a pretty good deal based upon what they ordered and what they paid for it. I'm sure that nobody enjoyed any of it in any way, but you should blame people's fear of flying and the fact that our government was willing to throw money at it. It literally couldn't have been any better without being much more wasteful.

Right, I don't hear this discussed much these days. I've always felt like I was being treated like a criminal, guilty until proven innocent. In 2013, Newark Airport, I must have flinched while being X-Ray screened, then flinched again when I was being pat down as punishment for failing my X-ray. So I was taken into another room and made to strip down in front of 2 women. I lost it so suddenly I scared myself and them, and they halted the strip search. Upon leaving I yelled to them: 'Do we all feel SAFER now?' How many terrorists snuck through the back door while I was being strip-searched for flinching at a pat-down?
I submitted to the FBI-like 'trusted traveler' program process so that I'd never have to have that possibility again. I feel like I've bought a freedom I shouldn't've had to.

I also enjoyed this conversation. Engagement at this level operates partially as fuel for thought, and partially as a cleanse of the ongoing clutter everyone is exposed to in the last 3yrs. I also grew up without any guidance in faith, being introduced well after being married. However I look back to my early years, surrounded by a Christian culture which offered protections many of these last two generations should long for. Today I believe in the importance (or possibly requirement) of a society to view the transcendent (God) as being paramount. This allows the so called leaders of society to admit their weaknesses and their need / hope in that higher authority, and thereby bring these leaders down a notch towards those being lead. Yet the societies of the West are surrendering their dependence on God (or outright trying to kill Him), leaving brain-dead leaders to falsely operate as if they are the ultimate authority, and we are witnessing these maniac tyrants / dictators undoing 200yrs of growth and prosperity, assassinating the hopes of our children and grandchildren, and with the applause of the loud and the selfish.

We have lost a true base line comparison in contemporary society. Nearly every modern issue is illuminated by citing how things used to be 50 or 100 years ago - and yet the real base line exists prior to the industrial revolution. The homestead was everything prior to the industrial revolution... it was your grocery store, your dairy, your laboratory, your locale to seek adventure, your bakery/kitchen, your EVERYTHING... and the FAMILY ran it in the best way they could figure out. When you left your homestead - you entered "the public"... where it was SO important to be polite and courteous - "polite" in the sense that you were entering the world politic (same root word) and courteous in the sense that you learned to exhibit the manners/behavior you would use in court (again... same root word). Our proclivity to kick our offspring "out of the nest" so to speak should not necessarily mean that we exile them from the homestead. Certainly it would be better for everyone to learn to forbear each other so that multi-generational households were the norm and yet everyone in such a household was accorded the respect and dignity they deserved. Nowadays our homesteads are simply where we sleep... and eat, but sometimes not even that. Everyone leaves the homestead... to daycare, to school, to college, to work, to some sort of activity that is no longer on the homestead. So when we seek a baseline for comparison, I think it is incredibly important that we look back a little further than the last 50 or 100 years.

Interesting idea. I agree that the degradation of family solidarity/closeness/integrity over the last hundred years and its slow assimilation by a corporate government- now reaching an apex in ubiquitous and invasive mass surveillance- is a major root of our current national malaise. Strength, like charity, begins at home, and the atomization of society and the near- abolition of any barrier between the public and the private has sapped our foundations as a democratic republic.

CZcams is full of fake bots trying to put vague positive statements and comments that appear to appeal to both those that disagree with the content and agree with the content as a way of data gathering how to persuade people en masse bots are getting smarter however they are still just bots and they are worthless to people. Commenting appears to have become a data gathering for those seeking power to steal our opinions and use our points of view against us rather than a place where we can communicate together and express ourselves. There is no point in commenting anymore or smart phones or smart anything, it’s all just spying on us and using our info against us.

I attended one of Dr. Peterson's talks recently in Belfast.
His speech was phenomenal, as expected, however I think that there's another aspect of the experience that should be considered heavily:
Just the act of him being there inspired hope.
The stadium was absolutely packed, traffic along key roads at a standstill, just because of how many people showed up.
It should be noted that the talk took place late on Sunday night, so it was at an inconvenient time for most people and yet still, thousands came.
If the media is to be believed Jordan is mired in controversy and should be avoided, the same media and our government here tries to make us believe that those who have common sense or at least an open mind are the minority, but that evening, at least for me, proved that that narrative (as with a great deal of things you'll hear from such sources) is a lie.
Seeing so many people willing to spend time and money to sit through a talk by someone so vilified by governments and major media institutions, because they wanted to see and judge the content for themselves and think independently was such an uplifting experience, and the feeling of respect within the audience was palpable. (Except for those few lads at the back who'd taken full advantage of the bar areas in situ of course).
As someone who is entirely unqualified to give one, my message is this:
Do not give in to despair, there are many good people still left, and they hope you know that you're welcome among them.
