    I was born and raised in Newton Abbot and moved to the North many years ago.
    But i used to spend most weekends hunting on the moor with my gypsy stepfather when i was a boy, and i heard many tales such as the hairy hands of Postbridge.
    I always believed in the legends, and later in my autumn years, i became a witch.
    Blessed be.

      Ahh. lovely a Devon connection! The Hairy Hands.... I so need to do that legend. The only thing that is holding me back is it has been done by other channels a lot, however.... it has to be done! Expect the Hairy Hands in a future video :)

    That was the best telling of Mary Jay's story I've ever heard, very well done. I've walked past her grave a couple of times but I didn't know it was her grave, I did get an odd feeling that something was going on there though, I presumed someone had passed on there because of the flowers. Yes, it's hard to put across to people who have never been to Dartmoor it is like entering another world, something from a Tolkien book, especially if you enter from the south, it's like you've walked up to a plateau and suddenly gone through some sort of portal. A truly magical place.

      Thank you so much for your kind words. We always found that area weirdly quiet near Mary Jay's grave, and one of my hubby's friend found that area unnerving. The Lord of the Rings film trilogy looks incredibly like Dartmoor, but then one of the 2 main film concept artists, and one of the main Tolkein artists, is Alan Lee who lives on the moor, lovely guy. I think Dartmoor is one of those weird places that is still so old in energy that it speaks to something ancient within us who go there as well. Or maybe that's just me haha!! Have a really lovely day :)

    I’m from Widecombe in the moor. Jays grave is something I always go back to place flowers on whenever I go back there. There are many other folklore stories I grew up with around that area though.

      Thank you for your comment. Widecombe is so beautiful, and haunting in atmosphere isn't it... as all the moor really. Jay's Grave, we love all that area so much, the amount of times we've hiked that part of the moor I'm sure it's seeped into our feet! You are so lucky to have heard more local folklore stories being from the moor. I rely on Crossing's books a great deal, a true Dartmoor hero, but there must be so much folklore that he couldn't collect. We always leave flowers on Jay's Grave too. Have a lovely day.... Kelly :)

      It's a great piece of folklore, and knowing Dartmoor as much as we do it's interesting how so many of the villages and hamlets have particular folklore tales from their history. But then, Dartmoor is such a strange and fascinating place. Thank you for your comment :)

      Thank you so much, Dartmoor's a real obsession with us both... as you can probably notice!! The pub in North Bovey, I've got a feeling it's been closed down because of financial pressures? Am pretty sure I read about it online. Really sad how many are closing now. Sounds like a lovely walk that one :)

    Has anyone ever put a trail camera near Jay's Grave to see if they can catch on video whoever puts flowers there? I remember years ago going there and finding a number of small sea shells on the grave. They appeared to have been originally arranged in the form of a cross but they had been jumbled up. I put them back into a cross shape, but when I went past the grave a little later on the same day they were all messed up again.

    • @talesoffeyandfolk
      @talesoffeyandfolk  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I'm not sure, I have a feeling though that people don't want the mystery solved. I've left flowers there before, but late in the day when there's already flowers and offerings already there. Interesting about the cross shape!

      Thank you and enjoy your holiday on the moor! I would recommend Widecombe in the Moor as well... lovely for stopping for lunch and full of strange history, sometimes the Dartmoor ponies are on the green there too. Holne near Newbridge car park area is also a beautiful walk along the River Dart there, also Grimspound, Houndtor (Kitty Jay's grave is very near there) and Merrivale Stone Rows. To be honest ALL of Dartmoor is beautiful and mysterious... you will love it!

      @@talesoffeyandfolk Thank you so much for your reply. I will be researching all the areas that you mention as well as watching many CZcams videos . Do you recommend any particular area to stay as a base?

    • @talesoffeyandfolk
      @talesoffeyandfolk  Před 2 lety

      @@robinlocksley3381 Honestly I can say anywhere on the moor, any of the little towns or villages, they are all beautiful and Dartmoor is pretty small really, especially by car. Chagford, Ashburton, Moretonhampstead are the places that spring to mind because we know them super well, but anywhere is great, even the outlying villages are great to stay at. Because Dartmoor's quite small and accessable its great to have a base, drive to an area and go to lots of places in that one area in a day or 2. If you go to Princetown there's the Dartmoor Visitors Centre and they have loads of maps and literature about different parts of the moor to help guide you and they'll have great books about the folklore and walks :)

      Ooo lucky you, we were always up there at the Fox Tor Cafe when we were living close to the moor, and then hiking down to Nun's Cross and beyond. The Hairy Hands story is so weird, I remember reading it as a kid in Manchester and then when I moved to Devon and realised where that road is, one me and my hubby travelled a lot, I always was just.... that little bit wary. Fab story, I'll have to do it at some point even though there are many versions on CZcams... but, it has to be done!! Have a wonderful day :)

      That would be such a Beautiful thing to do on my behalf!!
      Of course I realize that you will be putting flowers there for the poor lass yourself also,
      because you are such a kind, understanding person!!
      if you don't mind explaining to Miss Mary 'Kitty'Jay that some of those are from me, Andréa,
      I would be immensely grateful!!
      And, if you find yourself saying a few kind words to her,

      Put simply, this poor young girl saved my life, literally!!
      Back , when I was young (er) and more feckless....

      Sorry, no I don't the earlier episodes have slightly louder music, the more recent ones it is quieter. I just don't have time to re-edit the older videos without music, life is a constant juggling process at present, but the ones I have done since buying a new mic and recording equipment have louder vocals.
