  • Today we get to work on installing the hydraulic clutch system for Ruby by installing the 3/4" bore master cylinder. I thought it would be easy but it turned into homework calculating pedal ratios, fulcrums, master cylinder stroke and some math I haven't done in a while.
If you have a project you would like to showcase at the end of one of my videos just email me a few pics and a short description to: foothillpaintandfabrication@gmail.com

Dang Mark, that was some pretty fancy engineering! It's always a pleasure to watch you create something from nothing. Glad it all worked out for you.

Thanks Doug, I will know for sure once we put Ruby back together. Did you find someone to media blast your parts?

@@FoothillPaintandFabrication I haven't yet Mark. Still tearing everything down. I'll send you some pictures soon. I'm on the road for a couple of weeks so no working on the Truck for a bit.

Really enjoyed watching you solve all the little problems that popped up. I learn so much following along.
    Thanks Mark.

Thanks Robert. It may be time to do some dent removal to give my brain a rest. Custom always means more work...

This is why restomods have six figure labor bills. I like that you went the extra mile and got the clutch master where you wanted it. Very nice work. You and I have the same attitude. It's nice when you don't have to pay someone else for their time.

Thanks, I give myself a huge discount on labor 😁
When I started the project I considered tracking my time but decided it was best to let that go. This could be a once in a lifetime build for me so I don't want to cut corners.

Mine is a once in a lifetime build for me too. I don't keep track of time or money. It's the journey not just the destination.I will never sell it so I have to please me.I don't have to worry what it will cost or how long it takes. I make my money in chunks so when I have money I buy parts. When I have time I work on it. They seldom both happen at the same time.@@FoothillPaintandFabrication

Great job Mark, thanks for showing us the struggle, so many videos use tv magic to make it look easy. I like to say it's always simple but rarely easy.

Thanks Matt, certainly not rock science but in the end paper calculations need to ne mocked up in real life. I am not a fan of the shows that skip the meat and potatoes of the builds, I like to see the work and thought process so I can learn. Were you able to fix the defects in your paint?

I did a smooth firewall on my 67 and I used raingear wiper systems kit for the wiper motor. Sits inside the cowl and works perfectly. Their kit is for GM A bodies.

Hey Mark...wish I could have suggested the Malwood USA clutch master that mounts to the pedal assembly. That said, I'm going to recommend Digitails LED tail lights to you before you get there. They are made to order and take a while. They are US made and a huge upgrade and worth every penny.

Thanks Greg, I actually looked very closely at their refit kits and talked to a guy that specializes in under dash units he custom builds and got some great advice on using a Honda Accord slave or something. In the end I wanted to retain the factory peddles and if I had used the Malwood unit I would have installed the reservoir on the firewall so I figured I might as well use the Wilwood compact unit. Took some work and thinking but it should work well. I have seen some LED refit taillight kits on Ames Engineering, not sure if they are the same units or not but I will check them out for sure. Thanks

Hi Mark, I really enjoyed watching you work through all of the “speed bumps” involved with the hydraulic clutch system. One question, why not use the factory clutch linkage?

As you may know I drove my other GTO for years from highschool on, then drove this one. I love having a manual transmission but I wanted Ruby to be more enjoyable to drive so I went with the hydraulic throw out bearing. It also gives me more room for exhaust too.
