Drag Race: Toyota Supra vs VW Golf R

- An unlikely match up? Maybe. But when you consider that the Golf R has all wheel drive, versus rear wheel drive in the Supra, and the Golf R's legendary launch prowess, a quarter mile drag race seems like, at the very least, an entertaining idea.
We secured the latest examples of these two cars and lined them up on the Killarney drag strip for a good old-fashioned quarter mile drag race head-to-head shootout.

They both need to learn how to launch a car especially the Golf R Driver. They should have switched cars on the second race.
His reaction was slow in both runs... 😏
I have heard that because the transmission in the golf is a double clutch, it basically holds the first year ready while in launch control. Then, when the brake pedal is released, it takes a little time to smash the first gear in and launch. Not sure tho 🙃

I'd choose the Golf R all day long, mostly due to practicality. Then slap on a tune, downpipe, and exhaust. That's the perfect everyday driver.

@@okniceguy Is the awd that big of an advantage? The supra has more power and is only rwd, but I don't think you could spin the tires that easily with 350 hp with launch control on.
@@adxo so, I'm not an engineer or anything like that. I've only ever watched a few head-to-heads here on CZcams where the AWD system makes up the difference, especially on the initial takeoff.
But the Supra seemed up be catching up towards the end.

@@wezloka6674 yea dsg launches hard yes... and shifts faster than the standard automatic gearbox. However, when you launch these new conventional automatic transmissions.. the torque converter kicks in faster than the dsg. The supra isnt dsg. The dsg has a slight little delay. Even matt from carwow and some other reviewers admit spoke of this.
Or late to let go of the brake in this case. Check brake lights. 😀

I'm not aware of a Golf R config with 221KW. The previous 7.5 was 213 and the new upgraded 7.5 is 228. Can anyone clarify?
For the people that don’t own/haven’t driven a golf R for some reason when you drop the brake in launch control there is about a half a second delay but he dropped his brake too late

Golf R is a truly special car. Why to spend so much on a Supra when R is so much powerful plus can be used as a day to day car too. Great video team👍😊
The supra can also be used as a daily... has trunk space and it only consumes a bit more than the Golf R.

300ps are 300ps whats underrated? over 150 km/h the golf just goes on his knees coz of his little engine. and that a AWD with likly simular hp wins a drag is not rly unexpected.

bruhh it used AWD and more torque so it was gonna win the track since its shorter the reason supra won 1/4 mile was cuz it had more hp more torque gives you a head start but then at high speeds the higher hp car will kill the high torque car since it can reach higher top speeds

This race seems like bullshit to me. Stock Golf R's do around 13.3 and the new supra can do low 12's. Carwow did 12.2 with a stock Supra

Stock golfs can easily do 12.7-12.9 stock, if driver mod and weather conditions permit. However I do agree the Supra should definitely pull top end.
What a weird comparison, golf R has much less hp and torque and costs about $15k less.

The Mk4 Supra wasn't meant to compete with Ferrari. The Ferrari 355 those days absolutely smashed the Mk4 Supras. Only the NSX was built to compete with the Ferraris and it still does today

Golf R any day. 4 seats and a big boot. Daily driver and Supra not so much. Those wheel spin will kill you on the corners at speed, too much torque.

@@rockyokekaraoke7116 Even if the Golf R was driven perfectly, it still wouldn't be able to take down the Supra. If Carwow did the test we probably would have seen a better result as they do both the standing 1/4 Mile and the rolling start. RWD cars don't perform well straight from the dig and even if you had a good driver there is tiny room for error.
If these went on for half a mile the results would be the same regardless of driver skills, supra will always and I'll repeat ALWAYS trash the Golf R. Had the supra opted for a 4wd option it would have pulled at least 2 car lengths on the Golf R in both runs

Golf launched later than the Supra on 2nd run as well and yet it won. Somehow on carwow they have the TT RS losing to the supra... when the Golf R can take it with a worse reaction time...
Keep in mind that the track at carwow wasn't very slippery and so the supra could launch properly. If the track was smooth grippy then that supra would've dusted that Golf.

That Golf R did have a tune. It has aftermarket exhaust (the sound plus not OEM pipes/tips), and you can hear the DSG farts on the shift when he used launch control. You don't get the DSG "fart" when using launch control on the factory ECU tune. I have the Golf R, this is obviously not stock to anyone that knows the car. It's still a fun race and good to know that it can run with a new Supra without much work. This likely was just a basic Stage 1 or Stage 2 tune with exhaust.

Yeah but with the old supra would beat “hothatches” back in the day. The new one is about as powerfull as the old one. But 300+ hp back then was quite a lot for a car like that, but not so much today as multiple hothatches have even crossed the 300hp mark. So in the end the supra is kinda disapoiting if you know where it came from.

I sat in one yesterday. DIdn't like the 6 fake holes in the seat headrests (in addition to the 10 fake exterior vents). Outward visibility is terrible, the windshield's vertical height is so short between the dash cluster and ceiling, also short is the vertical height between the top of the infotainment screen and bottom of the rearview mirror.

Mohammed Seedat coming from an m135i owner and former golf 7 owner, I tend to differ with fuel economy. Those 3l n55 and b58 engines are less thirsty compared to gti and R 2.0L
