You just made my list of places I need to go grow exponentially. I’ve been all around the area, been there been there haven’t been there haven’t been there been there, haven’t been there etc. If you hike a lot, gaia gps is worth a download. You can record your track so you don’t get lost. Cell reception not really necessary, works off gps. You can also download detailed maps if you know the areas you will be hiking. One more thing Bill, get rid of the sling if your hiking, too much pain on a long hike unless dump most of the gear 😂.
Thanks for the info, we definitely should look into using an app like that! I don’t think Bill needs much convincing on the sling bag issue, he is a backpack guy for sure and for good reason. I have stuck with the sling bag though somehow even through the pain! -Eric

I live in North Carolina. You two would love Dry Falls, not too large but not without grandeur. A foot trail goes behind the falls into a spectacular cave of water. That gorge also has countless other falls. The Outer Banks are also a spectacular place to shoot. You can shoot the wild horses.
Sounds like we need to plan another trip!

Thanks for watching! Eric was still shooting with the canon R believe it or not the day we got in the truck for the drive he got the delivery of the R5 but it was too late. I was shooting with my Nikon d750 I hadn't decided to purchase the Z5 yet. I like that name too except most of our videos are far from adventures It's us sitting down just talking.

Love, love, Love this video! I am a waterfall chaser . Ga, Tn, Al. & N &S Carolina have so much to offer! I was laughing at Bill or was it Eric? when he was counting the steps! I did this several times at Amicolola falls (604 steps)& at Tallulah Gorge (1099)
Thank you! It was me (Eric) counting steps, I can’t help it! We’re heading out on a Pennsylvania waterfall trip on Sunday so we’re going to be putting another video together for that one.
We were pretty close to planning a TN trip instead but opted for PA this time.

Just returned from the Maggie Valley area of NC and got a couple of waterfall shots. Your video caused me to buy the book (using your link) and plan another trip!

I don't know how old this is....but first of all....we are just a few months from retiring in Brevard, NC /DuPont State Park / Pisgah National Forest. Of course we are excited...not only did you capture some of the gorgeous falls (you need to go back and get more), which we enjoyed....but I am a novice Photographer. First thing I thought of for your name? "Two Guys and a Camera". Thanks for the great shots of what will soon be our 'backyard'. If you ever are back in the area....give us a DM. Hopefully, by then we'll be settled and our new RV purchased and ready to explore! GREAT JOB!!

This area is great for photos. My dad lives in the area and I have been to most of these. Great to see them again in a video. I really like the Mill Shoals site. A shot I took here many years ago was actually published in a Popular Photography Book so this site is special for me. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 👍

Did you see the Dragon Tree at Skinny Dip Falls trail? Just took a four day trip and hit most of these falls plus a few more. Twin Falls was a huge find in South Carolina not far from Rosman area.
Yes we did! It's crazy how that tree grows. It's a great area to photograph!
My house is at the top of Key Falls, and my family used to own Key Falls Inn.
We loved the whole area!

Ha! This is definitely a big country with a lot to see in it. this is one of those areas that you probably wouldn't know about unless you researched it a little bit. But it's a beautiful area of the country and the Blue Ridge parkway is just spectacular.

Do you regularly visit Windy Falls? Went a few times back in the 80s when I was an NOC employee, and could never find them again!
This was our one and only time to the area. Who knows when we'll be back. It was beautiful and we definitely would like to shoot in this area again.
@@BillEricPhotography Thank you for the amazingly fast reply! I was addressing thewuf's reply about doing tours of the area, but I really enjoyed the record of the trip you two made. Over the last year, I have made the drive from NC to Brooklyn and back for work several times (wasn't ready for the airports pre-vaccine), so I know what it took. I apologize for the acronym in my original post, NOC is Nantahala Outdoor Center, and it was a big part of my early adulthood and introduced me to the wilder parts of the mountains of NC and their beauty. Since then, I have traveled much of the world (all seven continents, actually), but NC will always be home. I hope you have great memories of, and from, your little adventure! Great photo work, and even though I'm a Pentaxian, I pass kudos out to both of you!

Another great video! How about “Bill and Eric’s Photo Adventures” or “B & E Photo Adventures”? The photos were really beautiful! I would’ve still taken one camera and the holy trinity of lenses because you just don’t know what you’re going to find or at what angle you might want to shoot. And it seems it’s always that one lens you wish you would have taken along.
We were thinking something very similar maybe photography with Bill and Eric. They kind of covers everything. I didn't feel like I really needed anything other than those three lenses. Really covers everything especially on a trip like this. Bill

Great video! It looks like some of the falls would be accessible in the dead of winter as well? The falls in Rickett's Glenn, I would imagine, would be treacherous in the winter due to the spray icing up on the rocky trails.
Yeah Ricketts Glen is open in the winter but you have to be ready for ice hiking. I think most of these falls in the video would be accessible year round, we’ve seen many photos of them in wintry conditions.

Great Trip with good planning! The Carolina’s look like a good place fir photography.
The topography is so different east coast to west coast. Being near the foothills of the Sierra you are at 5,000 within 45 minutes with another 4 to go.
3 weeks ago I and a friend were on a similar trip from Northern California to Bryce and Zion for 9 nights. Color overload in a good way is my best description. We hit peak fall color in Zion, the maples were glowing red and the cottonwoods vibrant yellow.
Around the campfire is bourbon to quell the aches and pains of the day which was daily. I followed that trip up the following weekend in to Yosemite fir my daughters photo journalism class assignment.
I cant say enough good about photography. It takes me to places that requires slowing down which i hadn’t when just hiking and the best shots are the ones i did take.
What happened to the Z5, are you out of sequence?

Thanks, sounds like I need to move where you live. Those are bucket list trips for me can't wait to get out west. I agree when we are out photographing That's all we are thinking about It really takes you out of it all. I actually did my first gig with the Z5 and the auto focus was a little disappointing and the videos are a little out of sync sometimes but I'll be getting to that one soon.
You probably know this already, but, when hiking you can use an app on your phone to track your course. Apps like Map My Run or AllTrails can be helpful, especially if you should get lost. However, if you're out all day and it's running on each hike, you'd better bring a portable USB charger in your backpack because they can drain the battery.

I could definitely see that! Looks like it might be fun though. Unfortunately we were there when it was much too cold for anything like that!

What's your technique for getting the correct exposure of these waterfalls using ND filters? Do you figure out your exposure first without a filter then use a conversion chart for the correct SS, then attach the filter and shoot? Or do you keep the ND on the entire time, use autofocus and half press your shutter button to get your exposure level and adjust SS from there? I hope I'm making sense.
Usually we can determine the exposure with the ND filter on the camera. But if it’s darker and the exposure is going to be really long, we use an app called Slower Shutter. It’s really useful for doing the math and keeping track of the exposure.
Too bad you missed Turtleback Falls and Drift falls just .25 miles further along the Rainbow falls trail
That hike beat us up pretty bad, but we’d do it again so maybe next time?
Great video! Question for you fellas: what shutter speed do you find optimal to blur water? Do you have a preferred setting or do you vary it? Also, do you not use ND filters as often? My problem is sometimes I get to these far away places a little late morning so the ND helps me. I know a polarizing filter you use, right? I am a bird photographer mostly so I could use the advice thanks!
Thanks, during the day we almost always use and defilters for waterfall photography. Usually a three stop or six stop is enough. It really depends how much light there is. As far as the shutter speed it depends how tall the waterfall is but usually a second or two is enough.

Looks like you had a great trip. We forget the distances you have to travel, in the UK its only just over 600 miles from top to toe. Bill, how did you get on with the new bag?
Yes the US is quite a big place! The bag is very convenient but not very comfortable. I’m many of these places there wasn’t a place to put a bag down so a backpack would have been difficult.
This was a 780 mile drive!
Can you recommend the best town to stay in to have access to several of the falls?
Asheville, NC is probably your best bet. Nice town and close to the whole waterfalls areas
"two muppets and a motor home" springs to mind but thats not gonna work for the trailer
as already mentioned "Bill and Eric photography" etc works to keep it obvious and to be take serious.
log hollow falls: the bottom left of the falls looked like i nice comp for a freeze action shot, the way the water switched directions in bands.
with waterfall treks its probably better to have someone with you incase you go arse over tit.
Ha! We saw that happen. An older photographer we met had just fallen into the river over his head. He slipped on the leaves. He was ok but was completely soaked. Definitely better to do this with someone!
@@BillEricPhotography 9 times out of 10 if there is water i get soaked, last time out i stopped off on the way home to get some autumn colours at a near by wood and fields, the mud was ankle deep and i was in a skirt suit and heels.
fortunately i dont mind getting a bit muddy or wet, its part of the joy of outdoor photography, being one with nature.
one of the things i really want to get is an outex waterproof system for the M50, its pretty darn expensive but it will pay its way in the saving of drowning a camera and lens.
i was crossing a small stream with my camera and lens in hand and really didn't want to drop it if i slipped.
there have been a good hand full of shots i wish i could have gotten when out for a walk in the rain but i didn't have my camea with me because of the rain..
the last time i actually slipped in mud was walking down boat wharf that went into the thames river, i could see it was muddy but didn't expect it to be slippery for some reason, before i knew i has slipped i was sliding down to the water on mu bum.
Sounds like you need to get yourself a professional waterproof camera. That's one of the things I like about my Nikon is that it's weather sealed and I don't mind using it in the bad weather.
Any travel restriction issues due to Covid?
No We didn't come across any restrictions.
