Correction, it was actually mud from sitting on one of the wood planks backstage. My uncle's best friend was a stage hand at Woodstock. He did however have blood on the side of his right hand from windmilling and kept wiping it off on his white boiler suit.
Pete's lead break at the end, he doesn't usually do lead breaks but WOW he fucking rocked that guitar!this why i think there will never be another live band like The Who, at their peak(watch live at the isle of wright 1970 up loud) no one came near the power, the energy, the fucking volume! simply the greatest rock band ever.
Money can't buy that kind of freedom or liberation. Pete Townshend played from his fucking heart. He wasn't thinking about how much money breaking that guitar might cost, because he didn't care about what happened next… or even five minutes from that moment. The man was just in the present, pouring his soul into his music. Probably apart of the reason you're in your mother's basement right now watching videos of this man, instead of attempting to make history of your own. Is because your hung up on the retail price of a fucking guitar. Instead of trying to understand what playing great rock and roll music really means and represents. At least, when it's good.
@@BabaLoochi Mud I would guess. They got there 12 hours early according to Daltrey. No dressing rooms, no nothing. Probably had to take a seat at some point.
A friend of mine had the lower half of a Gibson SG guitar body Pete smashed up at a gig, the bit that had the tone control buttons on. I was SO jealous lol, definitely one of the best rock relics to put in a frame & hang on your wall!
@mandelcorny You'd know that Pete bought the first Marshall when he was 14 yrs. old. 100W amplifier heads and stacked 4x12 cabinets and even the black grille cloth have everything to do with Pete and John and Jim Marshall. Pete was part of the conference held after Jimi Hendrix's first concert in England. From songs like Who are You to Sea and Sand there are tons of things that Pete does with the guitar that NOBODY else can duplicate. His flamenco style style of strumming.
hello Ivè just read å 600 pgs bigraphy on the subject. and I know as a follower thru the years how much the man has been thru as a person.... I wan`t to send my regards to Karen Townshend and of course to Roger.... and Meher Baba keeping this incredeble genius alive
@soccerlu08 that's good. if your still interested in an sg sometime down the road you should check out the classic if you haven't already. aside from the bridge and the tuners i don't thing there is any real difference between what pete was using. pete's sg specials came with Bigsbys that he removed. if you look at the woodstock footage you can see where they were mounted.
@soccerlu08 the sg specials that pete was using during the tommy era were budget priced and that was one of the reasons that he used them. he stopped using them when he couldn't find them any more and gibson changed the spec of the special. did you buy yourself an sg yet? did you get a classic? that was the new spec that pete didn't like. there is only one guitar that pete ever regretted smashing - that he didn't intend too - and he claims all the others wouldn't be of any real value today.
I didn't know the wolfgang was fender. I thought you meant his frankenstrat. And I always thought wolfgang was peavy haha That's his amp right, or the 5150? Either way him and Pete are guitar gods
Paul Stanley of Kiss ends the show by smashing a guitar but the ones he smashes are prop guitars with the neck sawn right through ready to snap on impact. He not only does that for the general effect but also, as Pete will testify, electric guitars are very hard to break.
@gunn2040 I'm in Canada. I grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. That's how I know her. I was friends with her younger brother. I moved, but she still lives there.
@EpiLPstandard The thing is, over the years he became more and more conscious of the value of the equipement he smashes. So these days he actually switches for a cheap chinese knockoff of a strat right before the last song and smashes that instead of the expensive Fender.
@nkmcfrln oh ok, well knowing that they wouldn't be considered collectibles now does make me feel a little better. I ended up not getting an SG, I got a used Epiphone Sheraton II which I freaking love!
True story, I started playing guitar when I was 6, my grandmother knew a bunch of musicians, the first words that came out of my mouth: "Have they ever smashed a guitar?"
i agree, dont diss his status people, they are awesome musicians but their time has passed. they are still awesome but i mean you have to have the full band for it to be the who...r.i.p. mooney your awesome
Honestly, I feel that a guitar is a good stress reliever. If Pete has the itch to smash a guitar, then let him do it. There's plenty more guitarst out there that do that, yah I also feel there's a part that pisses a nice chunck of money down the drain, if there's a guitar to go smashin' it's either a Rogue or Squire. Don't be bustin' a Fly'n V er somethin'.
as someone who is trying to save up to get a good guitar (Gibson SG), this hurts to watch. I read in an article back in the day he smashed a Gibson that would be worth over 50K today. And in total he has smashed close to $1 million dollars worth in guitars
I always feel like doing this, but I only have one guitar
I love how John Entwistle is just standing in the back all calm while Pete, Keith, and Roger act all insane!
I love how chill Entwhistle is during his bandmates' hyperactivity.
The only sober dude be like
Rest in pieces, brave guitar souls. :(
They died with honour.

coolest man on the planet

I literally only have one guitar and if I broke it I couldn't play anymore. :/
i love that old bugger! PETE!!
Yea Me Too..👍
My favorite is when he smashed the Gibson SG at Woodstock. Awesome clips! Thanks for sharing.
Damn, Sam ! The Who next to SOS and I thought I was alone ,great stuff posted here ! Thank you !
How the hell does he JUMP so high?? Can any one of you do that?? I couldn't do that when I was a KID!! It's like he's on a trampoline
As he said this is self-destructive ART!
I agree...THIS IS ART!!
thank you so much 4 posting this YEAH
I watched this to see Pete Townshends crapped pants. 2:09
Wtf lol... Is this a camera artifact or did mans really shit himself? Did he ever talk about this hahaha
@@BabaLoochi Mud I would guess. They got there 12 hours early according to Daltrey. No dressing rooms, no nothing. Probably had to take a seat at some point.
@@WhackaWhacka Yes Mud & Blood !!..
It's blood LOL. He would wipe his bloody right thumb across the ass of his pants.
best band ever!!!
I'm So glad I've seen them live
He really IS a Rock God!
@bassharmonica1 yes, it's Ringo's son, Zak Starkey. He has been playing with the Who since '96
happy birthday, you living legend!
i did the pete townshend at woodstock bit at some girls party with her guitar. everyone screamed!
Only Pete Towshend can make smashing a guitar an art, if someone from nowadays were to do it it would be gay.
0:13 Never seen this before. Thanks man!
awesome job sam! =D
A friend of mine had the lower half of a Gibson SG guitar body Pete smashed up at a gig, the bit that had the tone control buttons on. I was SO jealous lol, definitely one of the best rock relics to put in a frame & hang on your wall!
It was at Shepperton studios. Btw it's a part of "The Kids Are Alright" documantary.
Happy Birthday You Legend!!! :)
Man, Pete still has that spirit :D

because its bad ass
Where was the concert where Pete did the Power Slide (The first clip)?
@soccerlu08 the sg specials that pete was using during the tommy era were budget priced and that was one of the reasons that he used them. he stopped using them when he couldn't find them any more and gibson changed the spec of the special. did you buy yourself an sg yet? did you get a classic? that was the new spec that pete didn't like. there is only one guitar that pete ever regretted smashing - that he didn't intend too - and he claims all the others wouldn't be of any real value today.
he makes it look so much easier haha. it's not as easy as some people think
Pete Townshend's Best pixels

roger was like "damn,he is really good"
XD
where's the last clip from
what you talking about? the superbowl performance was awesome!

@SteelSkin667 My bad. It's actually Ritchie Blackmore that does that. Pete keeps smashing the real thing!
as he got older you can tell he wasn't nearly enough fit to smash his guitars.
It was the speed that empowered Pete then. You try smashing your guitar on stage while sober; it doesn’t equate.
Hey extenkfart Pete invented that that classic
That's his main guitar now. I haven't seen him use his fender in a while
There's actually a vid of EVH smashing wolfgang (or a similar guitar) on youtube
Maaan even now as an elder he smashes them like he dont care
he has the money to do it so....and its great show stopper i loved it......
what footage is that from 0:11 to 0:36
Believe it or not, the roadies wrestled it back from the crowd! Suppose they were all high anyway. LOL!
1:52 had too watch with one eye open ,like a horror movie
I bet he cannot do that today now that he is old heheheh. Pete townshend a legend and my typical Dad hehehe
Fook yes
What is final song name
wow,and i am still saving up for a fender p bass which i will get next year because i don't have enough money
@MichaelHansenFUN
ha I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing this, I felt a bit weird to know these videos so well :D
@gunn2040 I'm in Canada. I grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. That's how I know her. I was friends with her younger brother. I moved, but she still lives there.
When he smashed the SG, it just made me sad T_T
hitting cymbals in mid-air with a guitar
02:47 Very nice ^^
why the monitors, the defenceless innocent monitors
Best BITS best BITS hey guys here's some best BITS BITS BIIIIIIIIIIIITS
@scartissue94 actually he was smashing the guitar because of destructive art
Townsend is a rock god. Those who don't understand can go back to listening to your girly bands
Whatever happened to that guitar at Woodstock?
@EpiLPstandard The thing is, over the years he became more and more conscious of the value of the equipement he smashes. So these days he actually switches for a cheap chinese knockoff of a strat right before the last song and smashes that instead of the expensive Fender.
definitely more money than sense !!
in one of the last clips, did I see the son of Ringo Starr or something, case the drummer's nose was HUGE(and he kinda looked like young ringo.)
@ MrJenoptem, what would be entertaining or fun about that?
@nkmcfrln oh ok, well knowing that they wouldn't be considered collectibles now does make me feel a little better. I ended up not getting an SG, I got a used Epiphone Sheraton II which I freaking love!
This makes me cringe a lot. All those guitars, man...
Same here. Fucking wasteful and unnecessary.
SvarteIX theyre his guitars, he can do what he wants with them
***** doesn't make it less wasteful.
Fucking wake up!!! This is real rock n roll
SvarteIX the only guitars i'd be smashing are old acoustics that don't play right
So much anger...dang...
woodstock segment is different cameras
Peter is a dear friend of mine and what you're saying here is nothing short of slander, sir!
Yeah I know. I thouht it would just be like bam and it's off
The Who!!!!
True story, I started playing guitar when I was 6, my grandmother knew a bunch of musicians, the first words that came out of my mouth: "Have they ever smashed a guitar?"
He shat himself!
He normally plays very very well for about 2 hours before the guitar has to die.
.18 Strat bites Pete
I whenced in pain
at :40 i was like: no no not the les paul!
Thumbs up if you think that a spot with pete that try to smash a guitar but he can't it may be the world's best spot ever!!!!
At first I thought, 'man, that sucks.'
But then I thought, 'whoa, those are some tough roadies.'
i agree, dont diss his status people, they are awesome musicians but their time has passed. they are still awesome but i mean you have to have the full band for it to be the who...r.i.p. mooney your awesome
Thats how you fking smash a guitar!
I tried to smash my old guitar once. I pussied out on the 4th swing when a big paint chip flew off lol
2:09 He shit himself from all the excitement!
Woodstock mud.

@MsGo69 are you high? townshend is a friggin legend!
@AK49RumRunner That would be cool. But I doubt it. He hasn't done that in years.
Oh. Sorry - we've got one more song to do, Pete...
That Strat seems a bit heavier than it used to for poor old pete!
