Urgot used to have a very unorthodox playstyle as one of the first true spellcaster marksmen in League of Legends. But due to a mountain of gameplay flaws and his comedic appearance more people knew him as a fat crab boy instead of the monstrous terror that he is. His full visual gameplay update would change that, transforming him to a terrifying man turned machine. Let's find out more with Urgot's Rework: A Retrospective.

Unrelated note: I REALLY think they can implement a star guardian Urgot, like he's not cutesy and anything, he's a star guardian MAFIA BOSS with a fedora that has star card, a scar from a distant battle from Zoe (he's the sole survivor of that conflict besides Zoe herself by using an elixir or something of that calibre) and losing his legs from that battle. He met the crew afterwards maybe and had a pajama guardian skin.

Like a Star Guardian Mordekaiser, who is actually a kid but needs to stay inside the armor to protect himself but nobody knows that so he acts all edgy. Camille, being another veteran who had to replace most of her body parts due to injuries. A lot of champions could fit really well im a theme like this.

I used to LOVE old urgot, it was my pocket pick mid, no one knew how he worked so I had my biggest successes with him, I could only play him for 3 weeks and then he got reworded.
Little did I know, it would happen again and again, for instance, I love fizz’s non-reverted W the one you had to recast after the bleeding bar was full, I’ m sad that they both changed when I loved them..

I actually loved loved old urgot as a support. Mark an enemy and then reduce his everything while your adc hits him and you poke until they run out of range and lose on an entire wave. After you get ult, any time you see an enemy engage you someone can stun enemy carries, just ult them and they die. Also good for baiting under you own turret when they try to hit it with their last 3 minions. Perfect timing lets you lock them under your turret for an easy kill. Add to that that no one expected your damage nor that you can weaken them so much because no one knew his kit. And the best part, I got giant enemy crabgot for free so I could lay waste with style

ADC? Very, very risky, but super fun with an engage support. Tilts the enemy with constant barrages of missiles if they dare approach the minion wave in any capacity.
Support? You said it - good engage, good poke, surprising utility.
Top? And they think ranged top is bad now! Untouchable peel and unrivaled range.
Mid? Rough, but pretty durable. Almost impossible to duel once he gets his claws in.
Jungle? Surprisingly scary ganks, double so with the ult, but the clear did suck.
God, I still miss that horrid abomination. Everything from his gameplay to his theme was so unique!
Especially nowadays, when straight ugliness and pity as a part of a champion's thematic and visual identity just isn't allowed. A champion has to be badass, cool, attractive, cute or funny.
Not to say that old League used to have better designs and stories, God no, but that's weirdly one area where the diversity and freedom of exploration ends in modern League.

Urgot is such a good champion right now.
If you perform bad -> he feels very weak
If you perform good -> he feels like a death mashine, born for battle and revived and rebuild just to battle more and bring everyone down in big fights.

Old Urgot used to be my personal midlane pocket pick against assassins.
Something you neglected to mention was that his lock on worked through enemy stealth, serving as a point and click Q even on invisible enemies. Combine that with his ad reduction and you could give assassins a really hard time. You also always built a black cleaver early, giving you some aditional tankiness to make an assassins job that much harder. And if you had teammates nearby while an assassin was attempting to kill you or one of your teammates, you could point and click lockdown that enemy with your ult, almost guaranteeing a kill.

You didn't touch on this in the video but I think another big flaw in Urgot's old kit was that it was very passive. Ideally Urgot would sit back spamming long range Qs at the enemy until the enemy was forced to make a move, which urgot would then punish by being unreasonably scrappy for an artillery character. (Even without landing the acid grenade Urgot's Q was able to out-poke most champions. Sure it got way better when you landed the acid, but his neutral didn't rely on it as much as the video suggests)
You didn't want to use the acid bomb unless you can confirm a hit, which means you had to be close, you wanted to have the shield in case you get dove, and your ultimate was probably one of the best "fuck that play you want to make" abilities in the game. You couldn't really make plays with Urgot, only anti-plays.
(Also I will never forget M5's 1v2 solo bot lane Urgot. It's easily the proudest moment for that champion, flexing not only his strength as a character but also completely casting aside the rigid metagame of League of Legends, even back then... IEM Hanover M5 vs Dignitas Game 1 for anyone whose interested.)

The ultimate kinda makes perfect sense on him if you look at his kit as a whole. He's an anti-carry, really good at punishing people for trying to make plays (What with his acid grenade being instant at close range and a strong shield to punish you for forcing the issue on him), and the switch is honestly one of the biggest "Fuck that play you were trying to make" moves possible, both giving your team time to react to whoever was making said play and also setting them up to be destroyed the second the swap happens.

He was alright in normal games, but where he truly shined was on URF.
I remember having so much fun in URF with old Urgot. Not limited by his mana constraints, not encumbered by his long CDs, just focus building damage.
Missed your E? It's okay, you can try again in just a few seconds.
Landed your E? They are completely done for, as you spam the locked-on Q, slowing them with W, and as soon as the effect runs out you can almost immediately throw in another E.
And since you could focus your build on pure damage, you would absolutely MELT your opponent.
He was a whole artillery army all on his own.

    So much pain and destruction.

Current Urgor actually mantains a lot of old Urgot. I will argue that the only new thing is the passive:
Q: is his old E even with the lock on mechanic
W: they kept the shield while also giving him offensive capabilities like the old one, the shield was later moved to the E so it would be easier to balance
    E: old ult but weaker
R: it's actually a mega powerful version of his old Q, locks on champions, straight line missile, makes him a threat even when he is not close, can be lethal in the right situation
Played both and felt that they kept the opresive playstyle of the old one quite well

Old urgot was used in competitive. First worlds league ever held featured a meta where Urgot would dominate bot lane alone while a support would roam the river, ward, harass the jungler, gank lanes. With how weak the old supports were, Urgot could manage to bully in a 2v1.
His main problem was.. there werent many items to support his playstyle. He wasn't an adc really, he was more of an ad caster like pantheon. I bet with the current muramana, and all the lethality items, ikd urgot could work well.

  • @MakoShiruba
    @MakoShiruba Před 2 lety

I LOVED prerework Urgot. He was a meme pick before certain changes went through, mainly the rework on his Shield, his Swapper and how his basic attacks worked. Before he was kinda of a trolly ranged bruiser that sometimes won through matchup knowledge and sometimes through actual counterpicking.
Urgot on his first gameplay rework was a dedicated AntiMarksman and could be played either Mid, Top or Bottom Lane. He was really fun and had clear weaknesses and strengths that made him a realiable choice for many a teams. I guess his impopularity was because he was buttfreaking ugly, his fantasy of a zombiefied abomination wasn't that appealing on design and lore and his previous kit failures and low winrate users made it quite a troll pick until Competitive started picking him.
When the rework was finally announced, a lot of people still played Urgot as an AntiCarry or SupportCarry that helped AD Centric teams progress. He was functional, but he also was balanced on a knife edge. I can see why Riot removed him. If he lands his skillshots, he is unstoppable and besides disengaging him, he just free damages you with zero problems until his mana bites him and if he doesn't, he kinda just wobbles about for a bit because unless he has his ultimate up, he isn't that great.
I still think a champ like him can work. His Ultimate was freaking cool and the concept of a turret champ kinda still exists with Cassiopeia. If they ever return to the concept, I want them to remove the binary aspect of his lock on, but remove his innate tankiness and how invisible his statchecking really was. But to be honest, I just want another champ that has that Ult. Nothing felt better than just Ulting the ADC and having the enemy team panic into either leave him be, protect him with a cancel or try to fight their way to stop the poor thing from getting zeroed by your team. That was fun.

The last point is why I feel like this is why Urgot's rework success does not invalidate Aatrox's rework failure. Old Urgot's style just wouldn't work and this new one fits him far better. Old Aatrox was a draintank juggernaut focused on Auto attacks and deciding which form of on-hit to use at each moment (extra damage vs extra sustain). I like new Aatrox, but it was not necessary to rework his playstyle away from auto attacks.

Honestly current Lethality Poppy can achieve hilarious one-shot combos, it's just not as degenerate as original poppy because she can't just become damage-immune. But if you land E on current Poppy you can Q -> R ->AA and they'll die while being stunned during the whole combo.

Ok old urgot main here- the vgu/rework was necessary as most of the kit can be adjusted to not make the kit redundant. I would have made the corrosive charge slow as well and adjust the w. I would make the new w either a damage ability or passive/steroid which would shield urgot upon activation and adjust the ult as well. I would make it the execute or something similar. I would adjust the passive to make it grant attack speed and damage reduction. Thats it. He just needed light adjustments and buffs. I would also buff the q's damage and do increased damage if you have hit them with consecutive qs in quick succession. This would stack 5 times, but only unlocks after reaching 6. This would make it so he can't steamroll you right away. I personally liked the idea of a ranged skirmisher/caster marksman

To close range fighter that trap opponents in his sweet spot zone, that has long range finisher if enemy wants to escape.

Oldgot was pretty fun to play, but he really shone on mid to high MMR Dominion (along with several other champs that were bad on Summoner’s Rift like old Karma). Turns out a map/mode with very different design constraints and objectives will have very different ideas of what makes a champ work-greater ease of flanking, a map with less time for traditional ADCs to scale, and objectives that fast basic attacks don’t help you take faster made Urgot’s AD caster gameplay much more valuable by comparison.
I also love new Urgot, and he’s actually one of my most played champs on ARAM. I do kind of wonder if you could maybe do a Dominion retrospective at some point, though.

Urgot to me was always ANti-Marksman played in the bot lane. He was one of the first marksman top meta. He was supposed to be reliant on a particular build path, but of course playing him tanky and with mana pots meant that he could have consistent damage while having great durability. This ultimately sealed his fate, as he was nerfed into oblivion and eventually reworked to be exactly the same thing that made him troublesome in the first place. It was a running joke at the time that if we saw an off-meta pick at LCS that it was going to get nerfed immediately after. Riot doesn't like it when their horse and ponies are dunked on.

Urgot and Yorick both fundamentally were busted poke champions. They both way early in the game's life were nerfed hard and basically put on ice because if they were buffed in any way it would make them incredibly strong. If you had his kit today it probably wouldn't be as much as a problem but still would be incredibly safe characters to play top and a nightmare for opponents. One of my most hated reworks because I've always been a bot person and they took my big beautiful rotting baby from me with that rework
