This is because he got used to his scent. For example when you go poop, the first few minutes stink but you get used to is and can sit there for longer. But if someone new walks in, they walk back out 😂 I think it's the same with this person.. it's sad you don't shower daily like wtf...
I attend anime conventions and I am no stranger to walking past people who showered maybe once a year. Fellow nerds, if you can afford to go to a multi-day event where you probably have to pay for your own travel, food and hotels, Im sure you have a few extra bucks for soap and deodorant.

My sister's biggest complaint about going to card shops was the lingering odor of "sweaty guys" in the room. Sad to see this wasn't an isolated occurrence.
The only convention I ever been to was Otakon in a D.C. hotel, and I remember when we first walked into the lobby, the smell in the air was like a punch in the face. There were hotel guests visibly disgusted and I thought to myself, way to feed the nerd stereotype, guys.
An old card shop I use to go to over 10 years ago had a "if you smell bad, you will be asked to leave" rule. When they had prerelease events, they would have a bunch of those scent plug-in in the store.

Spent awhile in prison/jail when I was younger and I've seen dudes get beat up for not showering. Small spaces, nowhere to go, can't open a window, no fresh air.. bad place to choose to be disgusting.

Many years ago I went to a comicon in St Louis. Old Spice was there handing out little gift bags to everyone who attended, with little bars of deodorant inside of them. That being said, the smell there was still horrendous, most of the people who needed the deodorant threw their bags in the trash. On the plus side, I think I went back home with enough deodorant sticks to last me years.

I remember when a regionals took place in my home city's convention center. I showered that morning before going to the convention center because y'know, hygiene.
I was outside the room that contained hundreds of players and when the door opened because someone was leaving the room, the smell was so bad that I collapsed on my knees covering my nose trying to protect myself from the bad smell.
That was my first experience at a regionals. The playerbase should be ashamed of themselves for not taking care of their own hygiene. It doesn't matter if "other" communities do it like the video game community or whatever. It's no excuse. I'm so glad they added the hygiene rule because the playerbase has no shame or decency.

Well, turns out that the judges are often made out of very passionate players... So if they aren't smelly themselves, there is a good chance their nose adapted to the stench.
I imagine it's easier to confront someone for using offensive language than telling a complete stranger they smell so bad they need to leave.

I honestly don't understand why some of them smell so bad. I went to locals, and I don't know who it was, but it was starting to stink up the whole room. Like, bruh, if you can afford yugioh, you can afford clean clothes and a shower..

fat makes sweating easy and it doesnt help that most yugioh players i know also use "heavy" clothers, sweaters and thick pants(easy to hide stains so that they dont have to constantly wash clothes) with allways carrying a heavy backpack (laptop + cards and game accesories or portable gaming console): more sweat
no skin care or personal higine to "save time" outside of quick showers, most of the people i know have pile of used clothes and everything they do is done to minimise "waste" why shower dialy? i just need to shower on the day of the event, why get clean clothes? this ones are fine. etc.

Certain people just refuse to look after their own health, especially with their hygiene, often going for years without washing once. And unfortunately for everyone else these people happen to often be among the most obsessed with their hobbies to the point where they turn up to every event they can and so end up stinking out everything each time. And it causes them to stand out so much that we all notice them no matter how few of them there are and how many other people are around. It's the smell equivalent of walking around covered with blinding lights.
Making it so they have to wash to be allowed entry would benefit them too, at least it'd be one way to ensure they actually have a wash. Might improve their health marginally.

@@cy156 I play both and both communities are horrible, yugioh players are rulesharky-toxic meta slaves and magic players can't stand other people playing decks they slightly dislike and don't even get me started on the whole power level thing in magic, people overestimate their decks 99% of the time calling their merfolk tribal deck a 9 for example.
i remember accidentally walking into a card trading store i was going to get a ps2 and guitar for guitar hero 2 and 3 and i walked into a card trading store where they have yu gi oh cards for sale along with pokemon and all the other games involving cards
when i walked in the store it smelled like straight onions and there was a bunch of people in there dueling and i had to walk right back out as soon as i walked in because of the smell being so bad and also because wen i walked in everyone stared at me
i wanted to look at the yu gi oh cards
but i felt very uncomfortable and the employees didnt greet me wen i walked in and again it smelled like onions so i just turned around and walked out

For those of you who want to up your step up your grooming game!
1. Use anti bacterial soap
2. Anti persperant deodorant
3. Body powder (chasis or gold bond)
Apply to body and especially groin area.
4. Avoid eating greasy, spicy, and greasy foods before the event and during the event. As your pores release a slight smell from heavy foods your body has trouble digesting.
That's excessive. A thorough, daily shower should be enough, maybe an additional rinse during hot weather. If you do this and still smell bad, you have entirely different problems, maybe even of a medical nature. I agree with the food thing in your 4th point, on the other hand.

The sad part is a lot of the guys there are dudes that simply dont leave their homes often enough to realize they take 0 care of themselves. They dont even know theres a problem. I CONSTANTLY am worried I smell even a little bit. These dudes just simply dont care enough. Take a shower and out some deodorant on before a torny, that's all were asking. Its not that hard. Also make sure the clothes you're wearing have been washed before wearing them. Its that simple.

Same! I make damn sure to shower the day of, put deodorant on, etc, but I sweat like a mofo, and am constantly worried about it being an issue. I brought a backup shirt in my bag to bigger and longer events, in case I did well and needed it.
if you look through people who have stories about this it's not usually their body sweat smell that is the problem, it's their breath. yes some people say it's smell coming from their body or putting on too much axe deoderant(yup) it's usually their death breath. imagine that's your opponent that you have to face to face
I shower every day (also because of my germaphobia) and in the summer often twice, sometimes 3 depending on how much I've done during the day. I constantly worry if I smell bad because my armpits sometimes smell like amonia and I can not imagine how there are people out there who are either not aware of how they smell, or simple don't care. It honestly baffles me beyond belief.
My fiance and i made a few bucks selling perfume demos in the Buenos Aires regionals a few years back when the vision hero support came out, helped me afford the final pieces for that deck lmao, and at every anime convention there's people cosplaying as showers handing out deodorant, not all heroes wear capes some are clad in a shower curtain

Bro I remember loosing a local tournament to stink... I LITTERALLY couldn't concentrate I missed played and at one point said to the dude yo scratch sniff you need deodorant. I asked the judge can you please get some air freshener. The judge chuckled and said yes. It didn't help.

The best solution to this is calling people out in the moment. Most people will be polite about it and just hold their breath till they can get a chance to flee.
But honestly if you just straight up tell the person they smell terrible, they may be more likely to take care of it then and there if there a bathrooms available....or even better they will start being more aware of their hygiene.
Most guys will stay smelling like ass because they don't realize they smell like ass because nobody has the general decency to just tell them they smell like ass.

I went into a game store with my son and as we walked past the tables he said, very loudly, "what's that smell?" I told him straight up. I love TCG's but I honestly cannot handle the smelly, dirty people. I literally tossed a set of sleeves once because they were so greasy after my opponent touched just a few of them. They should put instructions on how to keep yourself clean and smelling fresh inside packs...

I used to go to tournaments a lot. Food was typically bought because we'd be in there for hours. I get to dueling and the man across me wants to confirm my effects with his greasy pizza fingers. Grabs my card off the table dawg.
I've never let a single person ever touch my cards after those events. Luckily, my cards were dirt cheap back then. LORD, IF ANYONE DID THAT WITH MY GHOST RARES!

I took a seat next to somebody in the second round of regional many years ago he smelled so bad I got sick, almost as if I had food poisoning and had to go home.

A lot of people just need a shower with soap twice a day. Some people’s skin dont react to deodorant well.

It's not just YGO. I took a game loss in one of the few MtG events I've ever played in because the opponent smelled that bad, and it genuinely contributed to me stopping playing MtG IRL altogether.
I've played MTG for over 20 years and I've played against some straight rancid smelling people. Was in a commander pod with a friend and two other players, one smelled like unwashed a--hole and I killed one of his creatures. When he asked why I killed his creature instead of a bigger threat, I told him "Because your stink is killing my nose. Wash your ass." He scooped and left.
there's a photo going around of chairs from a MtG tourney after the fact, the chairs had sh*t stains on them where the players cracks where.....
@@EliteElk221 I've played MTG for over 20 years and thankfully have never encountered that myself. Luckily the MTG people at my LGS actually know hygiene, but I've met some flat-out rank as ass YGO players.

I play it myself and it boggles my mind how something as trivial as taking 10 minutes out of your day to jump in the shower and washing your ass and brushing your teeth is out of the question for some people. 24 hours in a day and you cant take 1% of the 1440 minutes in it to keep good hygiene 🙄

I've quit mid way because of the smell and social energy that was draining me, and I was like 7-1. I just didn't have the mental strength anymore. And most just call me a loser when I share this.

Nah dude, this is the sad truth amongst A LOT of attendees at these places. It’s not just Yugioh tournaments either, Brony-Con I heard (and have actually seen) from a friend had so many people who clearly either are afraid of water or have some sort of fear of washing for the day. Then when I go to Monsterpalooza, some guys there have never used deodorant or even freaking toothpaste. Like are you allergic to the stuff or something? Because holy crap dude, there’s NO REASON for you to smell like even Death himself would say “Nah, this will kill ME if I linger around you for too long.”
If you can afford tickets to any convention or event, you can afford soap and deodorant.
The stink meta is over, you can't take advantage of smell to win.

I’ve run into this a good few times while playing, in small and large events. Never enough to quit over, but certainly enough to be distracted while trying to play. People just need to take care of themselves better. Not just to not be offensive to other players, but because they themselves deserve it. Some self care can go a long way and you’ll feel better and play better as a result. Good hygiene = Good mental.

When i was younger my locals used to be on an very old mall remember they always had sewer issues nex to the store and always smelled like the wors mostly in rush hour at the many restaurants near the location, and i still remember it didn't smell as bad as some of the dudes i met there

Man, might be because I've worked on construction sites for the better part of 8 years, having a shower before you go anywhere or at the bare minimum laying on the deodorant and keeping deodorant on you is just mandatory.
I swear, folks working in construction doing hard labour for 12+ hours dont smell anywhere near as bad as some yugioh players... Its horrendous how bad some yugioh players smell.

When I went on the tour of my new university campus, we were warned of and received an advance apology for the smell before going into the game design lab.

Was at a hangout with a friend in college, she brought me to her friend group which was so big they’d all split into different small groups at a hangout which was chill
Of course there was the one group of yugioh players and across a big house you could smell how bad they were and getting close into their room it was actually unbearable how terrible they smelled
I went to another room and avoided them entirely
Yugioh and Smash tournaments are embarrasing to atend

We had a new guy at the factory who you could smell 10 meters away and left a trail of stink. By the end of the day the shift manager had complaints from all over.
Next day the man came in clean. He got a stern talk to I imagine.

When I was in middle school (this was back in the GX days) there was a "Yu-Gi-Oh club" that would meet every other Saturday at the public library until the librarians got tired of the conference room always smelling like BO.
I was at pokemon EUIC recently and can confirm it's not just yugioh.

I actually had walk out of a game store that was hosting MtG. Immediately stopped gagging and the first breath of fresh air was almost orgasmic
I remember we had an Alabama regional in the summer in a gymnasium once and it was horrific
I stopped playing ygo around 2 years ago and decided to go visit my locals again last week and I swear the first thing I noticed walking in there was the stench.
We had a similar policy for a game that I used to play called Legends of Five Rings. Some people just have bad hygiene regardless of the time of the day. The event hall that the game was held at (GenCon) was massive with lots of ventilation. But despite it being 8am in the morning when the event started, there were some players that were just a little too ripe. To combat this, we had something called Code of Bushido where if a player was deemed "too ripe", you can call DQ on them.
