Using the ASIAIR Plus to capture 4 targets in 20 minutes

  • In this video I'll be using the ASIAIR Plus to show how easy it is to capture 4 targets in one evening. I tried to keep this video as short as possible and it is pretty much uncut. A little speeding up when polar aligning but that's it. I'll be using a number of ZWO products that I've gathered over the past year, but the Electronic Automatic Focusser EAF is the newest edition and completes the kit needed for me to automate my narrowband imaging at night.

    I like the feel of this video. It's soothing astro ASMR that just happens to have the info I need.

    First of all, I have followed your journey and find your videos easy to follow. while I'm waiting for my EAF, I wanted to know if you use a bathinov filter to set the focus.?
    I myself have a standard telephoto lens Canon 100-400 mm and Eos 5D mk III, where I found a setup where you could put the lens and EAF together with a belt. In theory it should work, but I need to get the pieces home and assembled & then there will definitely be a starry sky :o)

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Před rokem

      Sometimes I use a bhatinov mask but sometimes I just do it manually. It depends on the lens and situation really. If I use my dslr and camera lenses I just zoom in 10x but if I use my telescopes I use a mask. The EAFs are great though. I keep meaning to set mine up with my redcat, although it’s a dream to focus manually.

    thanks for uploading, nice video. Question, where did you get the 12V cable to attach your EQ-6 to the ASIAIR?

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Před 2 lety

      I think was Rother Valley Optics in the UK

      @@astrojourneyuk Thanks for the reply 👍- I received one today from FLO, always wanted to do this but had concerns that the ASIAIR Pro wouldn't be able to handle it (overheat). Tonight is clear so this will be my first opportunity to use it. Thanks again

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Před 2 lety

      Mmmmm. I have seen and heard a few things about this. Some people definitely only power the mount direct from the 12V power supply. I power my ASI1600 and my mount and it seems ok. Check that the power draw isn’t too much because it’s the motors in the mount that will suffer, not the ASIAIR.

    Do the narrowband filters having different focal points has to do with the telescope (ex. Focuses colors in different places) or does it have to do with the filter itself?

    • @ignaceu
      @ignaceu Před 2 lety

      it depends on the filter brand and if all the filters are the same.

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Před 2 lety +1

      I’ve heard it also depends on the telescope as well. Something to do with parafocal filters and lenses.

    • @GarnettLeary
      @GarnettLeary Před 2 lety

      Definitely they arrive at different focus positions if not par focal. For example: I have a full set of LRGB and SHO filters by ZWO. They all have slightly different focus points. I have to refocus every time I switch. With planetary you can get away with focusing only on green and aligning to green but dso is a lot less forgiving. Good thing we have EAFs these days. Takes the guesswork out.

  • @gjman1972
    @gjman1972 Před rokem

    If I use this does it bypass the focus knob on the telescope or is it still used but with a focus motor perhaps? I have a Celestron 8se, thanks

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Před rokem

      If you are referring to the Electronic focuser then it does connect directly to the focuser and you cannot focus without using the motor. I hope that helps.

    • @gjman1972
      @gjman1972 Před rokem

      @@astrojourneyuk so I would need the focus motor which I have already and which will be controlled by the ASIAIR PLUS? I mean the ASIAIR plus doesn’t come with something that connects to the focus knob on the telescope? The knob that you turn left or right with your hand to focus if you have no motor?Thank you 🙏

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Před rokem

      You need a ZWO EAF device. The downside to the ASIAIR device is that it only works with ZWO products (apart from Canon and Nikon cameras and EQMod compatible mounts)

      @@astrojourneyuk ok I have been using my Canon 5D Mark IV for lunar and planetary photography it has done a nice job with the moon but of course my pictures of Jupiter and Saturn are so tiny with all that wasted black space around them. Having said that is there a ZWO camera that would be good for both lunar and planetary photography? Id rather get a camera that is really good for lunar and one camera that is really good for planets rather then get just one camera that is kinda good for both if it works that way. One of my goals is to try and capture video of Artemis orbiting the moon. Thx

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Před rokem

      I’ll have to start this with I’m so expert. But, planetary needs a lot of focal length and a small sensor to get the crop factor too. All my kit is to image things that are relatively big in comparison to planets. Partly why I’ve never tried it.

    Nice video, but you may want to remove your precise location. You never know who's watching and how they may take advantage of knowing where to get a couple of thousand pounds worth of kit from.

    Hi Astro, Any way you capture meteor showers?

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Před 2 lety

      To be honest I've not thought of using this device for this use case. I guess you could use it to continually take images, but it wouldn't replace dedicated meteor detection and recording systems. It's more for deep sky astrophotography in my opinion.
