  • Coffee flavor notes are something many of us rely on to choose our coffee beans when we first begin our coffee journey. Have you ever considered how these coffee flavor notes are selected? What if I told you that a coffee bag has so much more information than we could draw from to evaluate the taste of a coffee bean beyond the vague coffee flavor notes?
This video will go through every piece of information you can find on a coffee bag and how you can use them to determine the coffee flavor notes of a bag of beans more accurately.
As we get better at reading a coffee bean bag, we realize that coffee tasting notes are subjective opinions that someone at the roastery determines in a cupping session.
By consuming more coffee, make sure to document and keep track of the pieces of information on a coffee bag re-occurring in both your good and bad bags of coffee. This way, you end up making a repertoire of conditions that you can look beyond the coffee flavor notes to make an educated selection the next time you buy a bag of beans!

What things do you usually look for when buying a bag of coffee beans?

I know that I like a dark roast and the dark chocolate notes - or at least that's what I think I like. I just tried some Black Diamond from Join Top Shelf & the Grizzly Claw from Lavazza. I didn't get what I like from the latter but the former came really close. I almost get what I want with the Green Mountain Dark Magic beans but it seems like their coffee was not the same as before & I was in love with the ground version up until this year. I'm going to try the Black Diamond in the French press. When I started drinking coffee at all, I loved Yuban dark roast. I'm trying some Don Pablo Charbeanz Dark this next week. I'm really trying to find a Japanese brand that I can get easily to at least sample. Thanks for that tip, by the way.

I'm in the process of improving my home-brewed coffee. I recently upgraded to a burr grinder and have started buying freshly roasted beans from a local coffee shop that roasts their own and have started brewing with the AeroPress. I've watched most of videos and have really enjoyed them. Just wanted to thank you for your fantastic job on the content, graphics and presentation in your videos. You take a logical, analytical approach to coffee brewing, (as one should). Brewing beer, baking and brewing coffee all benefit from a scientific approach. Thanks for your time and effort that you put into these videos, allowing us newbies to save time and money based on the work you've already put in. Keep up the good work!

I think cupping coffee is very important to understand different coffees and find which ones you like the best

    • @brewinghabits
      @brewinghabits  Před 3 lety +1

I tried cupping consistently in the past but only found it really helpful when I had multiple beans to compare side by side do you cup every single bean you get?
Perhaps I need to figure out a system where I save a few beans from the last two bags to then accumulate more cupping cups +_+ This way I'll atleast have three different cups in a cupping sesh!

@@brewinghabits I save and freeze down 8 grams from each bag I buy. I then cup it when I have enough

This is so helpful so thank you. I love my coffee but just recently got into finding different beans to try. I use a drip pot (that does a bit of blooming) and am going to learn to use the French Press I have had for forever just sitting there. I think I am going to have to try some Asian beans. To be honest, before this video, I didn't understand what it was I liked about my favorite types of coffee. Now I know I am into the dark chocolate notes. Again, thank you. This was amazing and so useful without talking over the head of laymen. I am subbing for real.

Hi Paul, another splendid video, thanks. Very informative and well made. I'm with you on liking Ethiopian coffees best. Although I do like trying beans from different regions, I always end up back with Ethiopia. One further thought on beans roasted for espresso is that they generally are roasted darker than filter. The reason is darker roasts tend to be easier to grind fine and are less acidic than light roasts, both of which are important for espresso. Personally, I much prefer filter coffee over espresso and agree with you on favoring the lighter roasts. All the best for 2121!

Thanks for the comment, I'm constantly upping the quality of my content so this isn't even my final form yet!!! :P
Totally agree that the espresso/filter beans is somewhat reflected in the roast level. Interestingly enough, a lot of speciality cafes love pushing the boundaries of light roasts on their espresso machines so the line certainly is quite blurred these days.
By 2121 hopefully BrewingHabits will get into virtual VR seminars, have a hologram of me running it and be knee deep into fifth wave coffee :D

I just made it yesterday so it's quite bareboned but I aim to make it into a place I can share my the behind the scenes process, brewing assets and create a hub for discussion!
Right now I'm learning how to grow mushrooms, which will then become a video on how to use your old coffee grinds!

I would compare it to the experience of biting into a ripe stonefruit like a peach. Another way to describe it is when the combination of high sweetness, pleasant acidity and bright flavors come together!
