The brace measurement can be found on a framing square brace table. Also, I would explain that you must make sue the wall below the gable is staight,braced in and that the opposing wall is also the same or yor brace wil be for nothing.. Angle of bracing may change if collar ties are in place as well,and my code book states it must be braced back no less than three joist bays.
