    Really good tutorial. Even though I'm aware of the technique itself, I enjoyed the clear way you explained the whole process and watched until the end :) Thanks.

    This has been very helpful. You're very concise and clear with your instructions. I'm curious, I know this was made 4 years ago, I am wondering if there are any short cuts to this process with newer verstions like photoshop 2023?

    • @MattBorchert
      @MattBorchert  Před 4 lety +2

      If you want it to have a transparent background .PNG is likely best. Or you could keep a Photoshop file with a bunch of textures saved inside. Personal preference. :)

    Recently I tried to make a wet street look by making a fractal noise map (texture) and pasted it on the street layer mask. It didn't look bad but if you know a better solution, I'd appreciate a Matt Borchert tutorial about how to make a street look wet.

    • @MattBorchert
      @MattBorchert  Před 5 lety

      I think the biggest problem to solve is the unique way water reflects light and totally changes the dynamics of the photo. Making that look really natural is tough and perhaps a bit beyond me. Assuming you're trying to take a dry street and make it look wet. I'd suggest playing around with iridescent foil or something similar and overlaying that on the street, then using different blending modes to see how it plays with it. You'll likely have to really push the colors to properly reflect what you're trying to achieve.

    hi there- this is great- but does the image have to be on a white background? I have fabric that I would like to use for this- but it is not selecting as well as your leaf!

    • @MattBorchert
      @MattBorchert  Před 3 lety

      If you're trying to isolate the texture into a shape, having a white background or at least a solid colored background that you can select and change is very helpful.

    PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO FOR DRIP OFF UV TEXTURE!!!!

  • @TPToE
    @TPToE Před 5 lety

    Thanks for the excellent video! Is there anything one can do with a transparent texture that can't be done with a black and white one (using blend modes, blend if etc.)? On an unrelated note, I was interested in buying one of your Vintage Texture packs for use in Photoshop >> would you recommend the JPEG version or the vector sets?

    • @MattBorchert
      @MattBorchert  Před 5 lety

      Transparent textures allow you to actually use them as a mask, as opposed to a layer style. So if it's important that the texture creates a true knock-out on what it's applied to, transparent is the way to go! For my own textures, use the vector ones if you want infinite size, or if you intend to use them in Illustrator. The JPEG ones will have a bit more refined texture since going vector makes it pure back and white with no grey subtle areas. :)

    • @TPToE
      @TPToE Před 5 lety

      @@MattBorchert Many thanks for the reply! How does a transparent texture behave differently from a black and white texture when pasted into a mask? I had assumed that the transparent areas would act the same as white areas normally would in the context of a mask (revealing, whilst the black conceals).
      Re: vector vs. jpeg, is it possible to see a comparison example? The flexibility of vectors appeals in terms of resizing, but I figured there would be a loss of nuance (though given that the engraving textures are quite hard anyway, that might be an acceptable trade-off).
      Lastly, I love your logo!

  • @dar2023

    With this method can you change the color of this texture?

    • @MattBorchert
      @MattBorchert  Před 2 lety +1

      Yep! I would typically use hue / saturation to do so. You can also just select it then fill the selection in a new layer with the color of your choice.
