I think there I members of the older generations who have seriously underestimated how competitive and complicated getting in to college has become (not to mention the price) and have not done the best job at guiding or setting the example for new generations to deal with these pursuits.

    Hi Brooke!
    For international applicants, do Universities consider difference in educational system? Do international students need to prove that they are compatible for the American college? And considering that most American colleges give preference to American citizens, how much better should my college application as an international applicant be? I mean, as far as I know a foreign candidate A has equal grades to American candidate B, B gets into the university.

    • @morgankeller396
      @morgankeller396 Před 5 lety +9

    Do we have other criteria for safety schools when the school or major of interest is too hot (and there is no wiggle room to apply another school/major as apparent by the past activities of the student)? I am aware of the fact that this concern does not apply to all colleges (in their applications, no need to mention the major of interest)...

My course load is mostly rigorous as I have taken a total of 8 Honors and 1 AP, and currently in another 4 Honors and 2 APs. This year, I have a great start as I have A's and A+'s in most classes, especially honors/AP.
    For ECs, I got into selective Harvard summer program, 100 community service hours(56 hours Hospital-Selective program), NHS, Science Olympiad, and HOSA. Additionally, I am a HOSA Officer.
    I am yet to take the SAT/ACT, but assuming I get 1500+ on SAT or 34+ on ACT, where should I go for reach and target/safety?
    NB: Sophomore Year I dealt with mental health issues and bullying.

    • @narasimhakamath7429
      @narasimhakamath7429 Před 4 lety +2

      Hello there, if you ask me, I would say that the colleges particularly look at the courses you have taken. Let's say you are applying for a math program, then the adcom would specifically look for subjects such as calculus, linear algebra in your transcript. All in all, if you have a decent GPA and the courses you have taken are challenging/relevant, you might have a good shot at most fit schools. Reach schools would want your application to potentially stand out amongst the copious amounts of application they receive. I hope I made sense. Good luck. Thank You.

    • @SupertutorTV
      @SupertutorTV  Před 5 lety +2

      Muddy Calendar you can read each schools policies and admissions profiles on their own websites to see what they expect from you as an applicant. Generally any school range in the top 20 is going to expect very impressive activities. Any school ranked in the top 40 is going to expect pretty robust activities (at least a couple of clubs, and at least five or six hours per week on average of activity) or basically perfect scores one or the other. Most top 100 schools are going to expect some activities. Maybe you don’t need to be the president or anything of your club but they will expect some. Again otherwise they will expect scores that are 1 to 2 tiers higher than what they publish as their avg... And some schools deemphasize certain things and emphasize other things and to figure this out you will need to just read the literature on every college you were applying to

Pick a university committed to building and expanding your mind, not breaking and controlling it. Also maybe ck out Dr. Lipton’s older but currently relevant work: “Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism” - a little perspective on what ur generation is going to have to deal with (on behalf of Gen X - my apologies) published by UNC in 1961. Best of luck to you guys.

    • @SupertutorTV
      @SupertutorTV  Před 5 lety +2

      The common application allows up to 20 applications per student. I don’t know where you got eight applications. Some counselors and some schools will only allow you to apply to eight schools. But that is not a restriction of the common app. The gap is totally a matter of preference. As long as you have four or 5 schools that you have a very good chance of getting into on your list you are going to be fine. As long as you are also comfortable going to those schools that are your backups that is. If you are extremely eager to go to a competitive school, then it’s good to apply to more of them. I would think of it like this. Whatever the admission rate is at your reach schools, add all those admission rates together and try to at least get a sum of 100. And then you’re done. If you don’t care that much and you’re fine going to your safety school then you don’t have to apply to as many schools. It’s really up to you. 8-12 is probably a good number for someone in your situation.

    Here’s a good question - Do you have to apply to reach schools if all the schools you love are considered a safety school by others? I like Georgia Tech but I’m not sure and if I need 2 or 3 reach schools then I’m lost.

    • @RyanStar10023
      @RyanStar10023 Před 5 lety +5

      Lol no way in hell is Georgia Tech a safety school, maybe not a complete reach but definitely at least a fit/target. I know more than a few friends that got into Brown and Harvey Mudd but not GT. Also there is NO REASON to apply to a school you are not interested in, even if other people say it's just a safety. It's your future not theirs, if you don't care about Harvard or Stanford, don't apply. It'll just be a waste of money for their ridiculous application fees.

    • @brookifyd
      @brookifyd Před 5 lety +2

      Georgia Tech is below 30% admit rate-- NOT a safety. Fit at best assuming GREAT activities, 1470+ SAT or 33+ ACT and a near perfect GPA (no more than 2-4 B's). I.e. if you have a shot at Ivies this could be a fit. I don't know what you mean by your question though. Why are you lost? You never "need" a reach. You need safeties. You could apply to all safeties if you wanted.

      Honestly, if you would go to all eight if you got in then yeah apply. But just applying to all of them to see where you’d get in is not the best. But if it’s something that will make you think “what if I applied” then knock yourself out.

    • @aspiringking5000
      @aspiringking5000 Před 4 lety +2

      For example, if I got into UPenn or Dartmouth I wouldn’t go, so there’s no point in applying and taking someone else’s spot. But if you would actually go then I recommend applying. But very few people actually want to go to all 8 ivy leagues equally. I would recommend applying to your top 3-4

    I disagree with applying to 20 schools. If you do that your not interested in the school, but the prestige of the school.
    My son did 3 reach, 3 Target, and 3 safety (not really safety schools). He got into his 3 safety. Honor college of one, but not enough financial aid. He got into our to local school, should have gotten a free ride, but they came up woefully short. We could have negotiated with them, but hi is third safety made a real good offer and invited him to join a special program there. Then he got wait-listed at all 3 target schools.

    As an international, it would honestly be a dream to at least study in a shitty American community college instead of hardships I face in my country:/ But to land in another country‘s college you have to be 14676% better and smarter and only can apply to more or less elite places because they have scholarships and places for international students… it is surreal how incredibly hard it is to simply get anywhere at all in another country, especially if you’re not a millionaire

    Why do you make it seem like going to community college is a bad thing? sometimes it's a better option for people who aren't sure what they want to do yet or can't afford to go to an expensive school. Others, might not actually be teenagers watching this and want a chance to start somewhere.
