The reason Pop Pop looked so much older to Pike while Scanlon and Kayle look similar in age is because Pop Pop is Pike's great great grandfather. Gnomes in DnD can live anywhere between 350-500 years

The age thing is pretty simple. Gnomes like pop pop, pike, scanlan, and kaylie can live a VERY long time. Like 300-500 years. Scanlan is 69 years old right now. Kaylie is in her 30's or 40's. The twins will live to be in their 200's. While grog and Percy live normal human lines. Keyleth being a druid will live for a thousand years or more which is why Osysa said "no one will live long enough to see you achieve your goals"
Keyleth is a half-elf like the twins, so would live an equal length to them. Druids in D&D (5e specifically) are just a class not race & dont have extended lifespans (from what I remember of my DMing days)
@@dragonofchaos8518 Actually, once you reach level 20 in druid, your lifespan lengthens to a ridiculous degree. Centuries will pass, and Keyleth might look 5 years older. Half-elves live a long time, but a half-elf druid? She'll literally be in her prime for centuries
@@tjmann3177 You are correct, just rechecked and at lvl 18 they get timeless body which reduces aging by a factor for 10 (10 years pass = 1 year of aging). As said im my orginal post, been a while since I've done any reading on the classes.
@@dragonofchaos8518 on that note, from what i can remember, keyleth's aramente and the ashari stuff were critical role homebrews - keyleth completing her aramente so that she could lead the air ashari would be what leads her to having an extended lifetime of 1000+ years, among other benefits.

Yeah, she's got a very long and lonely road ahead of her. She'll outlive all of her friends. She'll easily be one of the most powerful beings in the entire world but she can still look to be in her 30's and be watching her friend's great-great-great grandkids living their lives.

“The Threads of Fate are not puppet strings” is a line that hit me harder than I would’ve expected the first time I watched this. That entire scene with the Matron might honestly be my favorite from this season

I heard someone say the DM made that whole arc for Vax's va to help him cope with his mother's death. I think that's why it hits so hard in general
Fun fact the voice actor for Scanlan loosely based Scanlans backstory off Eminem, he has no father figure, has mommy issues and even has a close relationship with a musical Dr. It’s slightly changed from the original depiction but the guy who wanted Scanlan’s autograph in episode 9 is called Dr Dranzel who in the original lore was the person who first discovered Scanlan’s musical talent. Scanlan refers to Dr Dranzel as Dr Dra.

Yeah Lupa, in the west at least dragons become notorious for hoarding treasure. Old stories like Beowulf or the story of Sigurd famously feature dragons guarding gold etc
Yup. Middle Earth has heavy norse myth influences so it's kinda obvious that Smaug behave no different to Fafnir.
I was told it was because they destroy normal bedding and the best was a soft metal. But now I figure it's like big scaly birds: love shinies! That and with enough of a horde you kinda guarantee a stable food supply without leaving the lair. Thieves and heroes who want the gold/slay the dragon. Dragons: people who auto order from DoorDash and eat the driver.
one thing to add, in Norse mythology there`s a curse treasure horde that turns its owner into a dragon. so if you kill the dragon and get its horde of gold, you will be cursed with insatiable greed and become a dragon. I think the only gold item was cursed. I don`t remember if it was one of the gold coins or a ring. this tale could be the source of dragons' obsession with gold in media.

Something interesting about Vax is that in the original stream/campaign he was looking into religion and faith potentially as a way to differentiate himself from his sister. He was on the path to being an acolyte of Pike goddess, The Everlight, but the incident in the Sunken Tomb happened, and now we have our raven boy.
In the game Scanlan used a teleport spell, this was superior in every way🤣🤣

I was under the impression that they went through the rectum, passed through a sphincter, and reached the lower intestines.
Getting to the stomach would mean flying up miles and miles of intestines, and taking dozens of sharp turns.

Actually, no part is that open. I think, it's okay to let it slide (suspension of disbelief and stuff), but there isn't supposed to be any air inside your stomach. It's like a vacuum sealed plastic bag. The only place in your body where there is air is your respiratory system.

In the Campaign the Sword was actually a immovable rod and it happened while they were in the air so, when Umbrasyl was flying forward to move at the risk of his life it dragged through half of his body. Was INSANE!
To explain about the age, as far as I know, gnomes/halflings can live a few centuries in D&D, but reach maturity at about the same rate we do. If I recall correctly scanlan is 69 (of course he is.) Kaylie is mid 20s, and pike's great great grandfather is like 350? not sure bout pike herself.

@@brewdaly1873 no he isn't. He's around 68 here he turns 69 in this arc as revealed in the letter he gives to Pike. By the end of the campaign he finally reveals his age to the group which is 70.
Haflings actually have a shorter life span than gnomes around 150 if lucky. And the only thing we know about Pikes age is that she's slightly older than Scanlan.
Dragons "LIVE" on envy. They don't need to eat or sleep, as their form is sustained on envy. They need wealth to feed that envy. Thus, they horde treasure and just lay on it.
Remember Scanlon is a Gnome and is 69 years old so a lot of his kids are at least 20-30 years old
So now he can claim social security without paying all that child support he once owe back then! 😂

In dungeons in dragons ,the way dragons level up is based on age and how big there hoard is. Right now they are as powerful as .ortal dragons can become. But with enough gold it's possible for him to become something when more poweful.
DND dragons hoard different things depending on color, Red dragons like Thordak hoard gold and jewels, black dragons like Umbrasyl hoard treasures of fallen civilizations(hence his obsession with the vestiges). But not all dragons are evil, they’re generally separated into two groups: evil chromatic dragons, and good metallic dragons
Scanlan is in his 70s and gnomes can live to the mid 400s

Oh Percy is not dumb. He is very inteligent. In DnD there is inteligence and wisdom. Percy has high Intelect but low wisdom. That means he is smart enaugh to make a dope trap out of silverware, but not wise enaugh to understand not to demonstrate it on himself like that :D
To add to the bit of dragons hoarding treasure, I learned a few years ago that in the case of Smaug, he laid in the treasure so long that some of it got embedded into his skin, giving him like a layer or armor. That's why arrows, swords, etc. had such a hard time piercing him aside from his weak spot.
Critical Role normally ended it's normal live game with cliff hangers.

A bit of trivia. Liam and Sam are both fathers in real life, which is why their characters had that father line during the fight.

2:06 funny you should say that as one of the campaign's most powerful moments was when Scanlan was confronting the group about him just being a joker to them and yelling at them "what's my mother's name." Everybody's backstory was to play at that point but Scanlan was still the same. So Sam, the player, decided to spice things up. Quite literally, too.

Also for dragons to ascend to be a great wyrm their horde as to have a specific gold amount in terms of game mechanics
One thing to keep in mind is that all of these crazy scenarios are what played out from decisions by the players in the game. They actually made the decision to make the back-end sneak attack to end up inside the dragon and then tried to anchor him with the sword from the inside.
Actually, they didn't go the back end. They used a Teleport to go inside Umbrasyl, they changed it here cause in the show, none of them knows a short Teleport, like Dimension Door.

also to give some context, this fight pretty much went about exactly as it was animated except for the way Vax and Scanlan got in the dragon. but this was a bit more of a funny/gross way of doing it.
I just came here to suggest a kdrama for you to watch. It's not about love or relationships like the many kdramas on Netflix. It has a more exciting story and the fights in it are really badass. It's called Weak Hero. Believe me, it's really worth watching.
Fun fact: Dragons will burn through anything they sleep on so they have to layon precious metals and gold is the softest. So hence a dragon feather bed

Although it is technically Percy's fault that Vex died in the game it happened a little different. Taliesin Jaffe (Percy) did start to ask to check for traps, but was interrupted. By the time all the side things were done TJ just went to pick the lock.

Gnomes mature at the same rate as humans, and most are expected to settle into adult life around the age of 40. They can live to 350 years on average, but it's not too uncommon for them to reach 500 years of age.

Some races in d&d are considered children/teen until their 30s and some races are old af when their 16. It makes for some awkward situations☠☠
Iirc dragons in older editions of dnd don't horde gold just because. They need it because they use it as a conduit for magic. It's how they can hibernate for decades without eating and it's also how they grow stronger as they get older. (tougher scales and more spells) Not only dragons though. Dwarves are generally without magic and resistant to it. Yet they can imbue magic into things they create with the stuff.

Dragons horde treasure because lots of different mythologies used dragons to represent greed and arrogance, and therefore depicted them collecting gold purely for their own self fulfillment. Basically, dragons are greed personified, and the heroes who slay them are those "pure" enough to overcome greed.
Originally, Kaylie named her mother first. She did intend to kill Scanlan, but Sam rolled persuasion in the 30s, and Matt rolled a natural 1 for Kaylie's attack. The gods can't speak directly to anyone on the material plane, hence the visions. They have to meet in the middle, so to speak, for an actual conversation. For some gods, meditation can suffice; the god of death needs you to drown enough to be between. I don't know about the betrayer gods, they probably need something nastier.
Originally, they teleported into the dragon and used an Immovable Rod (in his stomach, btw)... but you have to admit, this was far more entertaining! I didn't remember Umbrasyl having Greater Invisibility, but it turns out, he didn't use it until the events of the next episode... assuming it was the actual spell, not a lair-specific thing. Every dragon's lair has its little tricks...
Not sure how old kaylee is (like 20 something maybe?) But scanlan is 69 years old at this point

To explain age issues with the gnomes. D&D gnomes live somewhere between 300-500 years but hit puberty at the same age as humans. A rough estimate would be that every 5 gnome years after age 15 is equivalent to 1 human year (in terms of maturity). Pop pop is Great Great Grandpa, so there's 4 generations of difference between him and Pike. With gnomes, he could be anywhere from 80-200+ years older than Pike (likely the latter). Kayle is around 30 years old, making her roughly 18 by human standards. Scanlan at the start of the adventure was 69 (because of course he was), making him about 26 by human standards. They look similar in age because in terms of physique and maturity, there's only about 8 human years between them. Pike is about 40, so the rough equivalent of a 20 year old human. The reason she looks older is because her hair changed color. Originally it was dark like you see in the flashback with Grog, but it turned pure white after the stress of being resurrected (before show, which will likely be shown next season in a flashback). Percy's hair turned pure white for a similar reason after surviving the trauma of the Briarwoods.
Pyke's pop is probably a couple hundred years old. 226 isn't the oldest gnome in fantasy worlds.

Never watched the live plays but since critical roll is mildly based on pathfinder 1e ttrpg (original rpg they used before using dnd 5e) it’s pretty much this.
Mother of matrons is Pharasma, goddess of death. She monitors souls that passed on into her realm and help guide them to be reborn in a new life or something else.
Her enemy is ones that prevents souls from passing on or desecrate dead bodies like necromancers. So with that in pathfinder a known undead lich named Tar-Baphon aka The Whispered Tyrant… let that title sink in. Figure it out?
In vox machina s1 that ziggurat is an alter to the god of death titled “The Whispered One.” And he left BUT left behind an artifact. Knowing him as the god of undead that’s bad. The set up is matron of ravens she knows her archenemy presence is in the material plane and that’s a problem. So Vax isn’t just a shepherd to guide souls but she need a champion to help the adventures fight the whispered one when the day comes assumingely.
I've seen their first campaign and you pretty much got most things right. However the name of the evil death lord they dealt with was called Vecna. Not sure if they'll use the same name in this show for licensing reasons or whatever. Also they started the show with pathfinder but at some point switched to WotC 5E I believe.
Your confusion about why PopPop looks so old cracked me up, he's Pike's GreatGreat Grandpa. To put it in human terms, imagine seeing guy in his late 30s and a girl in her early 20s and thinking they look similar in age, then looking at someone else's 110 year old grandpa and wondering why he looks so old...

The brunette gnome pictured in Wilhand's locket is not Pike. That was Pike's grandmother, Wilhand's granddaughter. Wilhand is very, very old, even by gnomish standards.
